I’m drafting up an article on Substack soon about writing food in fantasy, fictional worlds! There’s no singular right way with writing, but some of my thoughts are yours for the picking, and here’s a little morsel before it’s posted in full on Substack soon… (link in bio!) 🍯🍗🍞🍻🥦🧄 Food. Delicious, moreish, succulent, mouth-watering, sometimes disappointing, sometimes hedonistic, warm, cold, essential - food. It may not be the first priority for fantasy writers in the throes of worldbuilding. Food is mundane, food is everyday; food rarely (though sometimes!) has direct impact on plotlines and character development, and yet: Food is important because it is everyday. What better way to immerse your readers in an entirely different universe, or even in one reminiscent of bygone real-world times, than to conjure up vivid descriptions of how food looks, tastes, smells - its impact on a character starved, a character greedy, a character of a certain class or background with access to different provisions? Many people experience very specific relationships to food, whether positive or negative, linked to childhood nostalgia or other experiences. Eating is pivotal to our daily lives, and writing provides a cornucopia of ways to immerse your reader in new, vivid worlds. Our beautiful planet is the best inspiration we could ever get for inspiring our fantasy lands. If you are writing a story based in a desert-like land, where moisture is scarce, then it would follow for the food available to its citizens to reflect the scarcity of rich, juicy plant-life, and perhaps consist more of small desert mammals (like mice and birds we see thriving in deserts on earth). There are no bounds to what you can invent, which is what makes fantasy so exciting - why not invent a type of cacti that though laborious and dangerous to harvest, makes for a nutritious meal that totally fits your desert world.
