Today I’m sharing a short snippet for the writer friends challenge. This comes from the opening sequence of Beyond the Humming Downs and reveals a little bit about the magic of my world. (That seems to be a theme this week. ☺️) ✨ ✨ ✨ The moment she crawled into her bedding beneath the wagon, exhaustion ached through Adehl. She curled into a ball, took deep breaths and tried to let the pipe-music and the sound of bells wash over her. If only she’d heeded Frahto’s suggestion earlier in the day, taken the offered provisions and kept riding. Hindsight was no use at all. Grass tickling her cheek, Adehl opened to the heartstorm, the wild tempest of ellir in the depths of the world. The energy flowed through her, strummed her llirah. The second book in The Conjureverse series did not come to play! It picks up right after were The Marvellers left off and automatically engulfs you back into Ella, Brigit and Jason’s schemes to figure out why Marvellians are so prejudice towards conjure people whilst figuring out there own magic and school. I truly enjoyed The Marvellers, and Memory Thieves loved quite up to its expectations. It’s a quick paced novel included with its prejudices towards conjurers (not unlike the reality we live in today) and tons of magic and emotions from these children characters. London is a city of buried secrets but none so buried, none so dark, as the Necropolis Railway... Opened in 1854 it was constructed to carry the dead out of London to a cemetery in Surrey, due to the fact that London’s graveyards were fit to bursting. There were train compartments for both the living and the dead, as well as a ‘coffin tickets’ which had to be issued to those… less upright passengers. 🔖CHAPTERS🔖 ✨Short or long chapters? Really depends on the genre and what makes the most sense in how to break up the story. I’d say because I read fantasy the most, longer chapters are the way to go. ✨Chapter names or numbers? I have a soft spot for chapter names, and I think this stems from the chapter names of the PJO series. There’s something so nostalgic about chapters having names! ✨Single or multiple POV? Depends on the story but I like single POV but with the occasional dual to get another characters perspective on a certain moment. ✨Check chapter length? If I’m reading at home, I don’t really check, but when I’m travelling I like to know if I can finish a chapter before I close my book. ✨Bookmark, dust jacket or dog ear? I’m not ashamed to say I dog ear my books - even my treasured copies! 😂🐶 ✨What’s the latest you’ve stayed up reading? I’ve stayed up until 2/3am to finish some books and loved it! Some of those include ‘Ruthless Vows’ and the entire Throne of Glass series. Brite, whose novels "Lost Souls" and "Drawing Blood" I had read previously, ran into some serious publishing roadblocks. Delacorte, whom Brite had a three-book contract with, refused to publish it, Penguin also turned it down and then it started to bounce from publisher to publisher until Simon & Schuster (US) and Orion (UK) decided to bring it up for air. Publishers had originally praised the novel's writing but then rejected it "[...] calling its subject matter 'too nihilistic, too extreme, [and] a bloodbath without justification'" (Brite: "The Poetry of Violence", 1996). . What results is a magical journey with deceipt, scholars, dark family history, intricate world building and romance to name a few. I would've loved for this to be a series rather than a standalone as I think so much more could have been added to make this phenomenal and not just "good and enjoyable yet a little forgettable". 📖 MG REVIEW 📖 Max in the House of Spies completely surprised me, in the very best way. This is my favorite book yet by @adam_gidwitz I ❤️ Max’s story. I ❤️ learning about the Kindertransport. I ❤️ how Max stood up to bullies. I ❤️ Max’s epic plans to get back at the bullies, especially the bird seed scheme. I ❤️ the quirky fun Montagu family, and the 🦓 and 🦘 appearance. I even loved the fantastical creatures that joined Max. #MaxintheHouseofSpies is a WWII historical fiction with fantasy aspect. It wasn’t what I expected, but it was so much better. There's a curse upon me! Whenever I properly research a book before reading - the synopsis, whether it's a standalone or part of a series, and if a series whether the series has already been completed, read a few Goodreads reviews if they are positive or not - I lose interest in those books/series after reading a couple and half of them. I DO NOT like those books!! I expect to like them, seeing as they are exactly what I'm in the mood for, and then the story takes such a turn, or the writing style is off-putting, or just the characters are frustrating or it limelights any of my pet peeves, that I just cannot finish the books and have to abandon the series. But! When I just read the synopsis of a book and think oh I'll love this and immediately start reading - I love that book! Then that book has just 10 pages left and I think there's no way this story ends here. Then I go Goodreads and find that oh it's a part of an unfinished book series 😑😶. Always! @the_court_of_dreams_ says I should have learnt my lesson by now, but have I? Will I? I don't think so...😶 Relation to this post? April reads have both categories of books. Author Ian Mitchell-Gill has lived a rich and varied life that made writing almost inevitable. Born overseas and raised in rural Canada, his days were spent playing guitar, engaging in athletic endeavors, and reading every paperback jammed on the shelves. Surrounded by great storytellers in his family and a close-knit group of friends, allowed his imagination to roam. This path led him down the road to becoming a teacher, and he started writing to create samples for his students to understand how a story is developed and polished. He and his students enjoyed the process so much that he began to write a chapter a week to share with them. My brain is gone. The ending of this book...eydge72be92bdyw9db 🤯🤯🤯 is an apt description of what went on in my head. This is book 2 of the The Daevabad trilogy, and oh, did it deliver. It picks off after a time jump and you get right back into the messy world. The politics and world building were on point. The characterization remained really good. While I did have a favorite character and others I wished would take a vacation they wouldn't come back from, all of them were well written and fleshed out. The book is on the long side and I don't know if it needed to be quite as chunky as it was, but I was quite hooked for most of it. What's the most heartbreaking story you've read? The Last Unicorn is definitely up there for me and the haunting scenes from the movie made it stick with me even more.
