THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1946) was on my Noirvember watchlist for so long but I stumbled upon it once again while watching ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE (1974) 3 days ago and now I know why the kisses in this film are the perfect example for what Alice said in that film on them not knowing how to kiss - rarely a scandalous film noir has such soft buildup sequences where the intensity or intimacy of kisses alone whether they're are touch-and-go or land dictates the narrative course at many places and this is one such fine example and from what I heard about, I can already see what could've gone wrong in the 1981 remake of the same name but will eventually get around to watching that too sometime later because ohh well who doesn't want to watch Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange f- The film opens with Frank hitchhiking from San Francisco down to San Diego and getting off at Twin Oaks diner where District Attorney Kyle Sackett asks him why he keeps looking for new places, people and ideas and Frank says he never liked any job he had and adds later on in the film that he's got trouble with his feet itching him to go places and the other lady remarks that he's an outlaw and can't stand captivity. "MAN WANTED" board set up at the Twin Oaks doubles itself in meaning for us with Frank assuming him to be a man wanted for the young Cora too who is living with a much older husband Nick there and the affair kicks off instantly to no surprise but telling is how men like Frank assume such wives to be unhappy with their older husbands by default. We get all the mushy mushy conversations of do you love me or I love you typical of the old Hollywood but then again, we are never sure of whether they think they really are in love in the first place or just act out for internal wishes... Cora didn't like the way she looked sometimes (ohh Lana Turner saying such line or feeling that way is blasphemous to say the least) and wasn't ever so homely and her marriage to Nick happened on the caveat that she made him clear that she didn't love him but Nick says as typical of the arranged marriages that the love would come later in time.
