Airheads (1994, Dir. Michael Lehmann). This movie rules so hard. It’s the best Adam Sandler movie by a wide margin, it’s my favorite Buscemi role, it’s one the best 90’s soundtracks, and it’s directed by the dude who gave us Heathers! It tanked hard when it was released, but luckily developed a cult following once people realized how incredible it was. As soon as my middle school self saw a TV spot for it for the first time I knew I needed to see it immediately and I was not disappointed. After initially reading about the plot, I thought it would just be…weird, but it pleasantly surprised me, as it had an interesting and unique story. I also loved the casting choices, as all of the main actors were pretty hilarious throughout, which I would say is almost vital for making an excellent comedy. It also had dramatic and thrilling moments with a teensy bit of horror to keep the viewers on edge, which was neat. There's a few movies that don't seem to exist on any official DVD release at all, in any region of the world. Including this gem, from the same director of Black Friday; Darren Doane. Which is absolutely criminal, because I finally found this movie to watch online for the first time, and I immediately fell in love. Thrash Video Customs to the rescue, and I think this is the most time I ever spent on designing a cover from complete scratch since the source material for a poster was nonexistent above 100px wide. Review Wild America 1997 DVD Rating: 3.5/5 Wild America is an entertaining adventure story that centres on the family dynamic and exploration of the natural world. This is one of the most Walt Disney films not produced by Walt Disney. Filmmaker William Dear has built his career on family stories that often include outlandish concepts. This is a more grounded story compared to the others and Dear provides an old school sentimentality, similar to a Joe Johnson film. Dear uses the story to focus on the bond of the three brothers as they navigate the obstacles of grown up and their quiet existence. The film wasn’t a hit when it released and it was another film that failed to capture Jonathan Taylor Thomas‘s fame. It’s not a classic by any means but it’s a whimsical story that has the building blocks of a family film. It’s not exactly a whole family story as the no-nonsense father is more concerned about the day to day life and can’t embrace what his children’s interests are. It’s a film I can connect with like many others who grew up with older generation sensibilities and I still enjoy watching this. It’s a harmless and an underrated Dear film, much like If Looks Could Kill. Crank: High Voltage: 📀📀📀📀📀 (5/10 discs) More violence and vengeance, all at a higher voltage. The sequel no one expected picks up seconds after the first one ends. To note, I would say without any spoilers, the first one didn’t exactly set up for a sequel, so this was downright crazy, like the style of this film, to start the sequel this way. Like the first one, the bar is set high for amounts of adrenaline needed. This time, the adrenaline isn’t the only thing Chev needs, he also needs to be juiced and charged up. Adding to the chases, fights, battles, and let’s say “extra curricular” are jolts of electricity and shock treatment. I like how this doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard to be different. Yes it’s crazier and more obscene but it stays within the idea of the first and just keeps up with the fun. The casting of a great Duane Jones in the lead role is an incredible choice, the low-buget gets a lot out of its effects and striking cinematography, but the awkward pacing makes for this being a bit of a drag at times, and the awful supporting performances and their idiotic characters make this a frustrating watch at times.
