Siente que no protegió a su mujer debidamente, ya que permitió que ella trabajara mientras él buscaba trabajo. En el camino también aparecen dos hombres, ex convictos, los cuales buscan la pista del dinero robado. Uno de ellos es Masters, personaje interpretado por el excepcional Lee Marvin. "Tras la pista de los asesinos" es un muy buen western. Y como todo buen western, aprovecha de forma excelente los paisajes naturales, entre ellos, las dunas y los valles con piedras gigantes que sirven para que los pistoleros y también los infaltables indios hagan su participación en la acción. El duelo final es digno de los mejores spaghettis western, por supuesto con el mérito mayor de anteceder a esas películas italianas. El estupendo montaje logra generar la tensión necesaria para ponerle punto final a una historia triste, trágica y con un final casi en la misma tónica. THE NEVADAN Although Ride Lonesome was my first Randolph Scott movie, I first found out about him by coming across The Nevadan while browsing YouTube, and I haven’t bothered to actually watch it until now. The Nevadan is about as bog-standard as these low budget westerns come, as everything from the script to Gordon Douglas’ direction to Arthur Morton’s score was tailor-made to be just competent enough to keep me invested (although the washed-out Cinecolor palette hasn’t aged the best on this one). What elevated The Nevadan past being outright mediocre, though, was Randolph Scott’s lead performance, as his charisma brought a lot of gentlemanly charm to his otherwise generic role as an enigmatic stranger while also leading to him having some solid chemistry with Dorothy Malone. It’s also nice to see that some of this movie’s outdoor scenes were shot on location, with the trees, ravines, and hills making the chase scenes on horseback feel just a bit more dynamic. Although this movie didn’t have very much action in it, I was honestly surprised by just how underwhelming the action was in The Nevadan, as the flat direction and general sense of stagnancy during the shootouts made them somewhat dull to watch and the punches in the hand-to-hand scenes were so fake that they barely even had sound effects half the time. This led to pretty much none of the action being all that thrilling, but I will say that the final fight being set inside of a crumbling mine was a fun choice, and it made up for the otherwise so-so fight choreography. The Nevadan was a decent enough western that was carried by Randolph Scott’s entertaining lead performance, and I find it interesting that Gordon Douglas would go on to make the equally by-the-numbers giant bug movie Them! just four years later. THE WALKING HILLS Watching Ride Lonesome back in December made me want to check out the rest of the Ranown Cycle, but since a lot of those movies are hard to find for whatever reason, I decided to just check out a different Randolph Scott movie that I had saved on YouTube on a whim. With its blend of elements from both westerns and film noir, The Walking Hills tells a simple, but compelling story of greed and its ability to corrupt people, as pretty much everyone in its small cast of characters searching for gold in the titular area of perpetually moving dunes either has something to hide, someone to chase after, or both. Shooting the film in Death Valley was what really sold the atmosphere of The Walking Hills for me, with its heavy sandstorms, vast monochrome landscapes, and general sense of isolation making the rising tensions between the characters feel more palpable (even if barely anyone here was pushed to their limits in any real way) while also just being quite nice to look at thanks to John Sturges’ compositions. Alongside the more broad character dynamics at play here, the emotional core of The Walking Hills came in the form of a love triangle between its three main leads, and while the actual romance wasn’t all that interesting, all three of these actors gave good performances, with Randolph Scott being the most compelling of the bunch for me. The Walking Hills also features several instances of singer-songwriter and civil rights activist Josh White playing his guitar and singing some ballads, and even with the movie’s shootouts, shovel fights, and shouting matches, these scenes ended up being my favorite moments in the whole film. Although I can’t imagine that I’ll be thinking about this movie for very long, The Walking Hills was still a decent noir western that held my attention, and since John Sturges went on to direct movies like The Great Escape and The Magnificent Seven, I should finally get around to checking those out at some point. Denver native Margaret Perry (born February 23, 1913; here with Randolph Scott) was one of two daughters of Marie-Antoinette Perry, the actress and director for whom the Tony Awards were named. Her father, Frank Frueauff, worked in the gas and electric industry. Her family had deep roots in Colorado. • Margaret made her stage debut aged 16 in 1929, Broadway followed two years later, as Phyl in John van Druten’s “After All”, starring Humphrey Bogart, then she went to Hollywood for “New Morals for Old” (1932), about a single mother (played by Laura Hope Crews) struggles to raise her son (played by Robert Young) and daughter (Margaret Perry), who find it difficult to listen to her life lessons. • She returned to Broadway for “Ceiling Zero” (1935), in which she played Tommy Thomas and was directed by her mother. The same year, she played a minor bit in the film version for Warner Bros., directed by Howard Hawks, with James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Martha Tibbetts, and June Travis playing the role she created. • She fared better as Joyce Struthers in “Go West Young Man” (1937), with Mae West as Mavis Arden, a movie star who gets stranded in the wild west, featuring Warren William and Randolph Scott. • Back on Broadway, she was directed by her mother in “Now You’ve Done It” (1937) and was Kitty in “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1938), with Frank Lovejoy. • By the 1940s, she was working behind the camera, as assistant to producer Gant Gaither on “The First Mrs. Fraser” (1947), and as director on such shows as” The Shop at Sly Corner” (1949), “Love Me Long” (1949), starring Shirley Booth, and “Mrs. Barry’s Etchings” (1950). Each only lasted a short time on Broadway. • Margaret was married three times, to newspaperman Windsor French; actor Burgess Meredith; and lastly to scenic designer Paul Fanning, by whom she had four children. When the pair divorced in the 1950s, she returned to Hartsel, Colorado to raise her children. Margaret died in April 2007, aged 94, and was survived by three of her four children. In the persistent rain in the afternoon, we comfortably watched two westerns with the charismatic Randolph Scott that were well worth seeing. Lee Marvin shines as always in the role of the unpleasant creep. These “old” westerns are far better than the action-heavy so-called blockbusters produced today.
