Crank: High Voltage: 📀📀📀📀📀 (5/10 discs) More violence and vengeance, all at a higher voltage. The sequel no one expected picks up seconds after the first one ends. To note, I would say without any spoilers, the first one didn’t exactly set up for a sequel, so this was downright crazy, like the style of this film, to start the sequel this way. Like the first one, the bar is set high for amounts of adrenaline needed. This time, the adrenaline isn’t the only thing Chev needs, he also needs to be juiced and charged up. Adding to the chases, fights, battles, and let’s say “extra curricular” are jolts of electricity and shock treatment. I like how this doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard to be different. Yes it’s crazier and more obscene but it stays within the idea of the first and just keeps up with the fun. If you make me choose a sub-genre within horror, it will always be ZOMBIES. Brilliant and tense, ‘Train To Busan’ is among one of the most frightening films about the undead, and delivers heartfelt performances from the entire cast. It starts off slow, but once it gets started, I can never seem to look away. ‘Resident Evil’ may be a little unconventional, but is a chaotically fun time twenty years on from its release, despite the CGI being…you know. it’s one of the few franchies that is consistent with its depiction of zombified individuals. ‘World War Z’ and ‘Dawn Of The Dead’ had me hooked from the beginning, and are very easy to sit through. There’s death and violence, but both predominantly focus on human connections above all else. They’re quite favoured by my own mother who is difficult to please when it comes to horror. In terms of comedy, ‘Zombieland’, ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ are top-tier. I love a good mix of laugh-out-loud moments and gore, and find these three to be very enjoyable. You’ll always find me revisiting these zombie films.

Boy Kills world stars Bill Skarsgård, Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Famke Jansen and Brett Gelman. It is the feature directorial debut of Moritiz Mohr. (Little side note here both me and my wife recognised Michelle Dockery but couldn't place her. When the credits rolled and we saw the name I went “oh from The Hogfather” my wife said “oh from Downton Abbey” that should tell you all you need to know about our different tastes in TV and film. Thought I'd include this as we watched it on what would have been Terry Pratchett’s 76th birthday) Skarsgård plays Boy a deaf mute young man trained to be a killer by ‘the sharman’. The film is very quick to set up that Boy’s sister and mother were killed by a dictatorship family. Jansen plays the matriarch Hilda, with Dockery, Rothe and Gelman playing her siblings and children. We can hear Boy’s inner dialogue but he chooses to present it in the style of his favourite video game, a Street fighter esc arcade machine. After this setup we follow a fairly standard vengeance story. The action in the film is intense, graphic and gory with a running commentary provided by Boy's inner dialogue. The film’s plot is thin and there is little character development. But, it just about gets away with it as the whole cast commits fully to their roles. There is plenty of humour spread throughout the film, mainly down to Boy’s inner voice and the cheese grater scene puts Evil Dead Rise to shame. I've a feeling this film won't do brilliantly at the box office, I enjoyed it but it is a bit out there. However, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't being referred to as a ‘cult classic’ in years to come. A very strong directorial debut for Mohr. Veckans dokumentärtips: Terror at the Mall (2014) Det normala med dokumentärer om terroristattacker är att man får se lite av själva attacken. På gott och ont, givetvis är det hemskt men samtidigt så har många en makaber fascination för att se den ocensurerade verkligheten vid sådana extrema händelser. När fyra maskerade skyttar från den islamistiska gruppen al-Shabaab klev in på Westgate köpcentrum i Nairobi, Kenya den 21 september 2013 och sköt ihjäl 67 personer så dokumenterades allt av övervakningskameror. Denna dokumentär består uteslutet av material från dessa kameror. Berättad av de som var där och bara skulle handla mat med sina barn, äta på restaurang med sin partner och shoppa lyxsaker, men som plötsligt hamnade i en kamp för överlevnad så har den också ett kraftfullt narrativ till bilderna. När Niall berättar hur han och hans fru Moon satt och åt på Urban Burgers och blev träffade av flera kulor och låg sen i timtals och blödde bredvid varandra (Moon dog), då ser man också det. Den mamma som gömde sig med en kula i benet med sina tre barn bakom ett bås medan skyttarna gick intill dem flera gånger och letade mål, det ser man också. Det är en oerhört stark kombination som ger en obehaglig närvaro. Dessutom så kom den erfarna fotografen Goran Tomasevic till platsen och var med i frontlinjen, när civila och poliser till slut stormade stället för att elitstyrkan velade så länge, och tog hundratals bilder. De fyra terroristerna agerade märkligt. De dödade kvinnor och barn men lät samtidigt många fly från platsen. Till exempel när de ropade i mataffären att gömda kvinnor och barn får gå om de visar sig, och en mamma och hennes två barn reser sig upp från bakom köttdisken och tilläts faktiskt vandra ut, förbi döda kroppar. Vilket mod. Hon berättar vad som fick henne att tro på dem, och självklart får man se allt via kamerorna. Skyttarna lät också muslimer gå men samtidigt dog många muslimer den dagen. De vinkade glatt till vettskrämda barn och småpratade med gisslan, helt utan hänsyn till lidandet de orsakade. En förklaring till deras agerande kommer vi dock aldrig att få. Chockerande dokumentär men ändå respektfull. Varning utfärdas, förstås.

The words are just as important a component to the success of a film (I mean artistic success - not commercial) as is how the film looks and what it does visually, both large and small (people who talk about film tend to sometimes forget that a low-budget film, or one that forgoes large sets and special effects, is still making a visual statement). What is often the case though - and one of the reasons why I think so many pretentious film people tend to look down their nose at big-budget special effect-laden movies - is that many film makers focus their attention on the visual aspect of film making but forget about how important the words are. Which leads to films like The Transformers I and II, Terminator Salvation, Ecks Vs Sever… and I could go on, but you get what I'm saying). I bring this up, because The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a film with strong artistic visions that also remembered how important the text is. No one familiar with Terry Gilliam's work could ever accuse him of not having a strong vision - but it could be said that sometimes that vision doesn’t work beyond just looking good - yes, I’m talking about Tideland. However, with Dr. Parnassus, he has created a gorgeous film that is a feast for the eyes, with a story that is big and interesting. Gilliam isn't scared of grand story themes and here he takes on the classic deal-with-the devil scenario (in The Fisher King - my favorite of his films - he went with the holy grail). Dr. Parnassus is a film I couldn't help but think of in the bigger discussion of visual ideas and the good and bad use of said ideas in movies.
