Is it ever going to stop raining? This record sums it up, a bunch of rain themed tunes, a slightly tenuous one in the form of ‘watermelon man’ and a few that have no relevance to rain at all like ‘dinner for one please James’. Good lineup on this but it’s a pretty commercial record just with more trombone than most. I bought it entirely for the cover to be honest even though it’s a well established truth that you can’t play the covers!! Portugal-based label @madaboutrecords is back at it with a welcomed official reissue release of the extremely obscure 1981 jazz-funk album from a Connecticut-based quintet called Quintessence. This brilliant 7-track recording is jazz-funk at its best, with some solid Fender Rhodes-based grooves, soulful horns, and a rhythm section that is deep in the pocket. ¡Hola! ¡¡Tachán!!, abuelo y nieto en ropa de faena contra Art Tatum en quartet y trio. Dos discos que se grabaron en 1956, poco antes de morir Art Tatum con 47 años, para la Verve Records de Norman Granz, que luego los reeditó bajo la serie The Tatum Group Masterpieces en su setentera Pablo Records. Conocida la capacidad de Art Tatum para destrozarte, abuelo espera poder escucharlos algún día con su nieto, escucharlos… de tú a tú, siendo capaces de comprender la enormidad de Art Tatum, de sus acompañantes, el papel solista de Ben Webster, sabedor de no poder meter más notas que Tatum en un compás, cómo acecha sus solos sobre la melodía con ese su sonidazo, cuando el vibrato y la calma de los años son, más que modo de soplar, genuino soplar. Es como si todo comenzara a mitad de Gone With The Wind, cuando el tenor aparece, o la cascada de notas de Tatum en Night And Day que luego Ben limita aunque Tatum sigue al fondo, locuelo piano, o el relax de My Ideal en estéreo, soñando a Coltrane por la izquierda, Webster por la derecha, Tatum al centro, o Ben acariciando “you are the promised kiss of spring time” en All The Things You Are. Hasta siete standars, canciones eternas, en quartet. Luego en trio, sentirte seguro sobre las teclas inalcanzables del pianista, a veces volando, otras escaleras abajo, esta vez nueve standards y un original. Los siete minutos de Just One Of Those Things validan todo el disco, y el otro Cole Porte, Love For Sale, se va casi a los seis. En los temas cortos recrean More Than You Know, a medio tempo, y en los lentos Isn’t It Romantic y I’ll Never Be The Same, que nada más comenzar se convierten en piezas bailables, cosas maravillosas de Rodgers & Hart y Signorelli & Khan, para rematar con Trio Blues, escrito por Tatum, que no es que descubra nada, más bien lo dice todo, además está Jo Jones en la batería, y Red Callender repite al contrabajo, ¿sabes que también grabó con Ry Cooder? Creo que el nieto será capaz, más pronto que tarde superará con creces al abuelo y comprenderá que la música chachi no tiene edad. Though he serves as de facto leader here, multi-instrumentalist Charles Owens is probably best recognized as a sideman. He was undoubtedly inside the Black Jazz orbit with credits on both Henry Franklin records (as well as ‘Tribal Dance’ on Catalyst) and the second effort from guitarist Calvin Keys, 1974’s ‘Proceed with Caution’ and strangely enough, given the amount of space I’ve devoted to writing about him of late, he clearly counted pianist Dwight Dickerson as a friend, joining him on the Al Williams Quintet + One’s ‘Sandance’ and vibraphonist ‘Rickey Kelly’s debut ‘My Kind of Music’, in addition to pairing up here. Regardless, 1971’s ‘I Stand Alone’ proves an unfortunate title in hindsight as it does represent one of just two opportunities Owens was afforded to lead a recording date. Performing here under the banner of Charles Owens’ Mother Lode, the session showcases a band of nine players, including Dickerson on Rhodes and Oscar Brashear on trumpet, tackling eight tunes including three Owens originals. While there’s nothing here that stands out as an exceptional composition, I think the strength here lies in the arrangement work, Owens’ hand is deft in working with the larger ensemble, and also in his breadth of performance. Featuring on tenor, soprano, and flute, Owens has some great moments— I’m particularly drawn to his flute and the more forceful, adventurous tenor work on cuts like ‘Cool It’ and ‘Nightingale’. Additionally, both the electric piano and vibes from Woody Murray (or Donald Moore on one song) create lovely atmospheric texture and there’s consistent variety to the sounds throughout. At any rate, definitely worth putting on your radar (give it a stream, the full record is available). The label here, Vault, seems to have generally been a failure— perhaps some minor successes with surf music, but a couple Jack Wilson titles (albeit one excellent one in 1966’s ‘Ramblin’) and single LP by vocalist Elaine Brown (also excellent, backed by an uncredited Pan-Afrikan People’s Arkestra) were about all I recognized in the jazz realm. One of the family records we inherited from @maureen_nervosa ‘s father that gets to live on in our home. Definitely a cool jazz record that is mildly uptempo for the most part. Morning spin, it’s a typically eclectic album from Eddie Harris that I’d completely forgotten about. Always on the lookout for something new this record sees Eddie singing through his electric sax using a wah-wah pedal, which sounds kind of like bluesy whale song. It also wouldn’t be an Eddie Harris album if he didn’t show off his impeccable sax chops, a bossa nova-ish ‘giant steps’ is that tune and he absolutely eats it up. Wicked group, Ronald Muldrow on guitar is a helluva player and there’s a surprising appearance for Muhal Richard Abrams in a much more straight ahead record than his usual work. Putting together a new double IKEA Kallax unit for my jazz records on a chill Thursday afternoon. I don't care what anyone says, these are perfect for storing records and their neutral white fits perfectly into any decor. Plus they are fun and easy to assemble. This has been a paid message. But seriously, I'm stoked about getting my collection better ordered. I've been organizing and culling since last week. I have too many good albums to get rid of, but a lot of them have wound up in my closet for lack of space since I reside in a small house. I'm spinning this lovely Charlie Byrd live album that I've had for a few years when I picked it up at our local thrift for a dime. Byrd was a terrific jazz guitar player who played nylon string acoustic and has a lovely, lyrical style well suited to samba and pop and standard covers. New York’s superb @frederiksbergrecords has recently reissued the highly obscure 1978 self-titled album from the pioneering South African-based jazz-fusion group, Spirits Rejoice. Released as a follow-up to the group’s slightly more known 1977 debut, ‘African Spaces’ (which was also reissued by @real.matsulimusic), this incredible 8-track recording spans a wide array of sounds and sub-genres, from jazz-fusion and funk, to township grooves, Latin rhythms, folk, and soul. Notably, standout tracks “Woza Uzo Kudanisa Nathi” and “Papa’s Funk” are prime selections for the jazz dancefloor, and should receive plenty of play throughout the upcoming summer Festival circuits. Seemingly one of the most unloved Blue Notes, saw it for a tenner and thought it had to be worth a punt. There are some shocking reviews of this online, and it has to be said the cover of The Four Tops banger is pretty lame and ‘goin’ out of my head’ not much better…BUT there are four tunes on here that aren’t crap covers and some serious hard-bop royalty to deliver them. 4 out of 6 isn’t bad, I’ve picked up plenty of albums for a single track. It’s not a great album cover either but it does serve to answer the question ‘did Hank ever visit Paris?’. This might never be anyone’s favourite Mobley album but there’s plenty to dig, Woody Shaw tearing it up on trumpet is always worth hearing as is the surprise inclusion of George Benson. 66% of this will be getting a rewind. New York’s superb @frederiksbergrecords has recently reissued the highly obscure 1978 self-titled album from the pioneering South African-based jazz-fusion group, Spirits Rejoice. Released as a follow-up to the group’s slightly more known 1977 debut, 'African Spaces' (which was also reissued by @real.matsulimusic), this incredible 8-track recording spans a wide array of sounds and sub-genres, from jazz-fusion and funk, to township grooves, Latin rhythms, folk, and soul. Notably, standout tracks “Woza Uzo Kudanisa Nathi” and “Papa’s Funk” are prime selections for the jazz dancefloor, and should receive plenty of play throughout the upcoming summer Festival circuits. Joe Henderson - Power to the People (1969) Born on this very day in 1937, it’s a good occasion to spin this incredible, long out of print album by Joe Henderson, originally released on Milestone records, and now having its much deserved time in the sun with this release. Also featuring @herbiehancock, @roncarterbassist, Jack DeJohnette, and trumpeter Mike Lawrence on two tracks, this is a superb album from beginning to end. With the exception of Ron Carter’s excellent “Opus One-Point-Five” and the standard “Lazy Afternoon,” all the tunes here are Henderson’s. Highlights are “Black Narcissus” which is simply beautiful, the surprisingly funky but politically charged “Afro-Centric” (props to Carters groove here) and a fresh, faster take on ”Isotope” originally from Inner Urge. People throw around terms like ‘undiscovered classic’, but I think in the case if this album it is absolutely true and @jazzdispensary & @craftrecordings should be commended for helping it find its much deserved audience. It is one of Hendersons very best and should be in any serious jazz fans collection.

Have I really never posted this?! That means that while I’ve been chasing obscurities and other records I’ve been neglecting to spin the big stuff. Some of the best music ever played by some of the best musicians ever to do it, proper goosebumps every time I hear that intro to ‘stolen moments’. Can’t get enough of Hubbard and Dolphy on this and everyone digs a Bill Evans sideman appearance especially when the rhythm section is this good. Oliver Nelson must have been pleased with his solo on ‘hoedown’ as he later orchestrated it note-for-note for a big band backing for Shirley Scott…almost like he was thinking of the scores as he played. I’m sure I’ve heard his solo on ‘stolen moments’ orchestrated too but can’t think where, someone out there probably knows. This is the highly sought-after mid 80s no gatefold, wafer-thin, Jasmine issue…sounds just fine to me and a snip at the odd price of £4.90. Does anyone remember the old Replay records under the roundabout in the centre of Bristol where I grabbed loads of albums back in 1999-2000. The Jimmy Glass Jazz Bar was scheduled for last Saturday, April 20, the performance of the splendid Norwegian jazz pianist @norvalddahl ; however, a sudden health problem prevented him from being in Valencia. Chevi (owner and manager of Jimmy) reacted and managed to put on the stage four musicians who had an unforgettable Neo-orleanese sonic evening. Structured from standards, these were followed one another by solos performed in a virtuoso way, in addition to full of sensitivity, by Amadeo Moscardó (piano), Guido Baucia (tenor sax), Gary Jackson (double bass) and Pepi Taveira (drums). Not that they saved the night, they went much further: they enjoyed on the platform, transferring their feelings to an audience that sold out the tickets waiting for Dahl, but who was not disappointed at all by the great musicians who formed the No Name Quartet, and that, quite possibly, they will never meet again as such. It was one of those improvised, unique and unrepeatable live shows. Andrew Hill - Judgement! I finally managed to grab a copy of one of my favorite Andrew Hill records. Hill has an amazing output, especially his run on Blue Note, so I can't pick a favorite, But Judgement! has always been close to my heart. Recorded in January of 1964 and Hill brought in some of the most talented artists at the time. The session is a quartet session and it features Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Elvin Jones on drums, Richard Davis on bass and Hill, of course, on piano. The session does not feature any wind instruments so the whole sound is kind of different from other records released at the same time. It is to my ears a bit more easy, yet complex, music. The interplay between the artists is very beautiful and it feels like there is a band playing together. Hill is famous for a progressive and quite unique way of playing, it is kinda hard to compare hos playing for anyone else's, The way he forms melody and rhythm through his piano is always exciting and can at times demand a lot from listeners. But on Judgement!, you have to keep your attention, but the music has a very good flow to it, especially when Hutcherson and Davis play together, like on the title track! Jones really has some layers with his drumming that feels both forceful and retained at the same time. Judgement! is a record that stands strong in the Blue Note catalogue. Hadn’t shared a Black Jazz title in a while (actually since my post last December celebrating completion of the discography as of May 2023), but that certainly doesn’t mean I haven’t been spinning them. At a glance, I’d say the Henry Franklin, The Awakening, and Calvin Keys records get the most consistent play, but genuinely there’s not a record in the catalog that I don’t enjoy— if anything, maybe the Cleveland Eaton or the first Gene Russell don’t do much for me? At any rate, I had ‘Revelation’ from pianist Doug Carn (and his then wife Jean) down last night, his third of four LP’s for the label, and the only one I don’t think I’ve ever posted on this account. Truthfully, I’d had this record in mind after my recent Steeplechase series in which I’d lauded the playing and writing of Jackie McLean’s son René. His debut as leader ‘Watch Out’ finished third in my Top 10 and in browsing through his appearances as side man, I’d recalled his supporting role here. Ultimately though, despite his versatility in featuring on alto, tenor, and flute and the addition an original composition to the mix with ‘Jihad’ (a song he’d record on that debut two years later in 1975), McLean isn’t particularly given much space to shine. This is perhaps not super surprising given the fact that he was still a relatively unproven entity in 1973, but regardless it’s the two Carns who take the lion’s share of the spotlight here, with perhaps guitarist Nathen Page and trumpeter Olu Dara taking the next tier of acclaim. All told, it’s a solid record. Vocalist Jean Carn definitely features prominently, so if you’re a fan of her, as I am, there’s plenty to enjoy. Doug Carn as well rotates between a variety of instruments including acoustic/electric piano, organ, and synthesizer. ‘Feel Free’ is the standout track here IMO— at just over 9 minutes, it’s bookended by the album’s most interesting vocal performance from Jean, but smartly devotes nearly three minutes of solo space at its core for terrific solos from both Page and Dara. The title cut and the lithe ‘Fatherhood’ are two other favorites— happy Tuesday y’all, weather’s getting warmer here!!!! 🙏🏼
