When Paul asked God three times to remove the thorn in his flesh, God declined; but offered him the promise that his grace would be sufficient for him. Gods grace being sufficient means that in any trial, hurt, or suffering Paul had the power to withstand it because he had been granted adoption as a son, and a coheir and conqueror with Christ. His grace is sufficient because, like Paul, for those in Christ Jesus the same power that raised Jesus from the dead also, according to his Word, lives in you. After having survived a shipwreck, being flogged, nearly stoned to death, as well as this unspoken thorn; Paul recognized through this powerful exchange that as long as he submitted his flesh to God it created a unique and freeing dependency on Him that would see him through the darkest of events, as well as a close intimacy with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore Paul relinquished his request for God to remove the “thorn” and instead he actively chose to rejoice in the suffering because he came to discern the value in its purpose rather than focusing one-dimensionally on his own pain. The result? Paul had a loving rescuer who always remained near and whose power was perfectly displayed in his weakness so that His glory could be revealed to all those who witness it, including Paul. I pray fervently that this reflection on rejoicing in the Lord for not only the good but also in the suffering will be a source of encouragement no matter what season or circumstance you find yourself in today. Excerpt from South African born Hayley Braun’s book “Surrendered to the Holy Spirit” In all of our options in this world, the Lord invites us to surrender and submit to His Spirit. It is in this place that our gifts no longer operate in our strength but they now operate filled with His limitless power, and impossibilities begin to bow. Our gifts were meant to be used in cooperation with the power of the Spirit, just as Jesus cooperated with Him while here on earth. My gifts and knowledge needed to be constantly filled with His power so that the world can see a demonstration of His glory. I was well on my way to living an independent, principled life of form with no actual power. I truly thought I was pleasing God by doing things for Him, and I had not realized that He wanted to do everything with me, filling every void and strength with Himself. Like Ezekiel’s river in Ezekiel 47, the tangible presence of God that we could sense in the room before we started worshiping began to rise like that river. My thoughts walking along the beach this morning. God is always moving and working. Sometimes those moments are loud and crashing. And in the middle of those loud, crashing times, He is working. We don’t always see it because we are so focused on the loud, we forget to be still and to listen. And it’s after those loud, crashing waves that we see His plan. Like the shoreline, sometimes we need the rushing waters to erode away the ugliness and clear a path for His glory and in His own time. Most of the time you can find me stomping around on the sand trying to keep the erosion from going too far. Trying to make my own outcome and my own shoreline. This morning it was just me and the waters. Not a soul around. And in the middle of the roaring waves, I took time to be still. One of the most incredible moments of my life. Standing on that rock, in Israel, looking out at the Dead Sea. I remember just taking a deep breath and asking myself “how did I get here” and just as I was saying that to myself I knew and I thanked God. He’s how I ended up in that moment. I was a homeless drug addict that dropped out of high school and was told over and over I’d never be anything. Now here I was hanging out in Israel. I stopped listening to every other voice, including my own, focused on His truth, and watched Him transform my entire life. I was looking back at pictures today to see “what changed” over the last few years, how did I end up where I’m at, lose my wife, and as I scrolled it became so obvious. I took my eyes off what truly mattered in life, took back the wheel, started driving where I wanted to, and I got lost. I’ve been trying to find my way again, get back to living the life I was put here to live, and it’s been a challenge. Only because I’ve been trying to do it on my own strength and that’s what got me off track to begin with. I woke up today, prayed, said let’s do it your way again, and I’m going to let Him take that wheel again.
