Ilana Savdie’s painting “Weapons of a mad abundance,” 2020 is on view now in a group exhibition “When You See Me: Visibility in Contemporary Art/History” at the Dallas Museum of Art.💥💥💥 The exhibition aims to broaden and complicate official histories and their corresponding visual strategies to allow for richer representations of those who have been traditionally excluded or erased. “When You See Me” features nearly 60 works by a diverse, intergenerational group of 50 artists who contend with visibility both socially and formally. Their works explore invisibility, hypervisibility, the desire to be seen, and the right to be private. The multivocal nature of this show is reflected in its co-curation by the Museum’s entire Contemporary Art Department, which comprises Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck, Dr. Vivian Li, Ade Omotosho, and Veronica Myers. On view through April 13th, 2025. Michael Kohn Gallery is excited to announce Ilana Savdie at the Jewish Museum in a group show “Overflow, Afterglow: New York in Chromatic Figuration.” The exhibition will open May 24th and will be on view thru September 15th. New works in painting, sculpture, and installation by Sula Bermúdez-Silverman (b. 1993), Sasha Gordon (b. 1998), Sara Issakharian (b. 1983), Chella Man (b. 1998), Ilana Savdie (b. 1986), Austin Martin White (b. 1984), and Rosha Yaghmai (b. 1978) use supernatural color and uncanny luminescence to evade the reductive nature of traditional figuration. Their palettes embody the lived experiences and cross-cultural allegiances of a multiethnic, multiracial, and otherwise multifaceted group of makers. Together, they push at and spill over the outermost limits of realism, highlighting the figure’s manipulability and continual metamorphosis. In turn, their practices generate space for resilient, transgressive, and exuberant bodies that cannot be placed or contained. Exhibitions in the City - ‘NGV TRIENNIAL 2023’ at The National Gallery of Victoria International on St.Kilda Road. The Triennial is based on three thematic pillars: Matter, Magic and Memory. Matter looks at nature, materials and making. Magic reveals how spirituality has shaped the world around us, and Memory shines a light on the people, places and objects - and their histories - that have made and remade our world. This is the third annual Triennial to be mounted at the NGV International and is spread throughout the entire gallery, on all levels. NOTE: Levels 1,2&3 Triennial works are within the gallery’s permanent collections, so the interactive maps are a bonus; touch the blue dots to locate the works you are viewing. SECOND FLOOR 19th - 20th CENTURY INTERNATIONAL COLLECTION GALLERIES: ‘CHRONIC IRRITATIONS (COLLECTIVE EDGING)’ by ILANA SAVDIE. Raised in both Barranquilla, Colombia, and Miami, Florida, and now working in Brooklyn, New York, Ilana Savdie creates large-scale, vibrant paintings exploring themes of performance, transgression and identity. Drawing on disparate subjects and environments as her source material, Savdie explores the multiplicity and interconnectedness of bodies. Many parts of her visual language find their origin in the Carnaval de Barranquilla, Colombia, where she grew up. A central example of the Carnaval’s transgressive spirit is the Marimonda, a hybrid character merging the physical attributes of a monkey and an elephant, often worn by festivalgoers as a fabric mask. The character’s large, round eyes and long, phallic nose can be spotted amid a flurry of forms in the right panel of this monumental painting. Source: exhibition catalog and notes. This superb painting by Fred Tomaselli is included in the group exhibition "Arcadia and Elsewhere" at James Cohan Gallery, New York. Arcadia and Elsewhere anchors landscape painting in the myriad portrayals of Arcadian landscapes, which portray nature as an idealized foil to the torrents of human civilization, stretching back into antiquity. The exhibition highlights the enduring prevalence of the landscape in contemporary painting, building connections between both established and emerging artists furtively engaged in the depiction of our natural surroundings as enduring sites of significance, while expanding and complicating the loaded ways in which landscape manifests as a form unto itself. In the show also works by Spencer Finch, Yun-Fei Ji, Byron Kim, Mernet Larsen, Jordan Nassar, Eamon Ore-Giron, Katie Paterson, Naudline Pierre, Matthew Ritchie, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Bartlett, Louis Eisner, Barkley L. Hendricks, Nikki Maloof, Zoe McGuire, Ilana Savdie, Trevor Shimizu, Joani Tremblay, etc. @fredtomaselli @jamescohangallery #fredtomaselli #jamescohan #jamescohangallery #spencerfinch #byronkim #mernetlarsen #jordannassar #eamonoregiron #katiepaterson #naudlinepierre #matthewritchie #alisonelizabethtaylor #jenniferbartlett #louiseisner #barkleylhendricks #nikkimaloof #zoemcguire #ilanasavdie #trevorshomizu #johncurrin #georgecondo #jonaswood #hilarypecis #sharahughes #elizabehtpeyton #lisayuskavage #raqibshaw #glennbrown #ericfischl #pierogilardi

Arcadia and Elsewhere, an expansive group exhibition celebrating the breadth and complexity of contemporary landscape painting practices across geographies and generations, is now open at our three New York galleries. This exhibition will be on view at 48 & 52 Walker Street and 291 Grand Street through February 10, 2024. 🏞️ The Artists of Arcadia and Elsewhere: Ilana Savdie Ilana Savdie’s work explores themes of performance, transgression, identity, and power in her vibrant, large-scale paintings. Her canvases assemble fragments into finely detailed, fluid compositions that pulsate with flamboyant color. Abstracted forms conjoin, merge, and blend to create riotous excess. At their core, Savdie’s paintings aim to dismantle ideas of binary or fixed identity and embrace performance as a transformative tool. Drawing on a range of subjects and environments as source material, such as the Carnival celebrations that take place in Baranquilla, Colombia, Savdie explores variable textures and forms of mark-making across each of her expansive canvases. Combining areas of stained and blurred color with swaths of thick visible brushwork or smooth, hard-edged marks, she employs acrylic, oil, and beeswax into paintings characterized by their dreamlike illusion yet grounded in the physical body. "I’m interested in the ways we attempt to locate home, history and heritage within the body and through folklore when we don’t have a landscape we can identify with. I think for me it comes from a family history of expulsions and escape stories from so many different countries, of knowing my history mostly through the stories I’ve been told, of not knowing much beyond one or two generations of accessing ancestry primarily through a clinical history registered in my body, of imagining a world where, as Gloria Anzaldua says, I can fashion my own gods out of my entrails." @ilana_savdie explores themes of performance, transgression, identity, and power in her vibrant, large-scale paintings. Her canvases assemble fragments into finely detailed, fluid compositions that pulsate with flamboyant color. Abstracted forms conjoin, merge, and blend to create riotous excess. Happy birthday to Flora Yukhnevich, who was born on this day, December 16, in Norwich, United Kingdom. Yukhnovich’s art boldly explores materiality and process as vehicles for meaning, with cascading and swirling forms evoking rhythm and energy to flow between representation and abstraction. She has attracted critical admiration for immersive paintings in which glimpses of art historical styles, from French rococo and Italian baroque to abstract expressionism, are spliced with references drawn from contemporary films, music, literary sources and consumer culture. Through her work, Yukhnovich astutely addresses dynamics of power inherent in received readings of art historical subjects and their associated hierarchies, in particular, by questioning notions of femininity and gender that are hard-wired into the aesthetic language of colour and form. @flora_yukhnovich #florayukhnovich #victoriamirogallery #hauserandwirth #cecilybrown #jennysaville #traceyemin #raqibshaw #damienhirst #ewajuszkiewicz #genievefiggis #peterdoig #sharahughes #markgrotjahn #fredtomaselli #louisebonnet #davidhockney #hernanbas #chrisofili #paularego #aliciaadamerovich #hilarypecis #ilanasavdie #ericfischl #lisayuskavage #johncurrin #francescovezzoli #jennymorgan #loiehollowell #angelahiesch #barnabyfurnas

To kick-off our Art Tender Series at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, artists @ilana_savdie and @harlandmillers from @whitecube and and street artist @leequinones joined us behind the bar of The Casa Dragones Tasting Room at the Collectors Lounge. Now living and working in New York, Ilana Savdie was raised in Barranquilla, Colombia and draws extensively on the city’s tradition of Carnaval in her work. Behind the bar, Savdie crafted the "Venus Fly Trap" cocktail with Casa Dragones Blanco, Grapefruit Juice, Lime Juice, and Lychee Cordial. Artist and writer Harland Miller draws on his life experiences; light anecdotes and darker truths that began in childhood in Yorkshire in the 1970s. Behind the bar, Miller crafted "All Night Meteorite" cocktail using Casa Dragones Blanco, Grapefruit Juice, Lime Juice, Agave Syrup, Grapefruit Bitters and Scorpion Bitters. Lee Quiñones is considered the single most influential artist to emerge from the New York City subway art movement. _Ilana Savdie(Colombian, b. 1986-)_Whitney Museum of American Art Ilana Savdie: Radical Contractions July 14–Nov 5, 2023 Ilana Savdie based in Brooklyn, NY explores themes of performance, transgression, identity, and power in her vibrant, large-scale paintings. 1st work___ Ilana Savdie, Baths of Synovia, 2023 For this exhibition, Savdie will present some of her latest work, including paintings and drawings, as well as new works produced for the Whitney. Bio. The chaotic compositions of painter Ilana Savdie use a cacophony of textures and fluorescent colors to depict fluid bodies that defy prescribed shapes. In her mixed-media painting Deliberative assembly (manos puras) (2021), for example, a green manicured hand reaches out nonsensically from a painterly sweep of yellow. Holding a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Yale School of Art, Savdie had her first solo show at ltd los angeles in 2019 and has exhibited internationally in various group shows. She also participated in a NXTHVN Residency under the guidance of artist Titus Kaphar. Savdie is inspired by exaggerated carnivalesque aesthetics and colliding bodies, drawing on scenes she witnessed as a child growing up in Barranquilla, Colombia, which hosts a major annual Carneval. #ilanasavdie #colombian #artist #whitneymuseum #museum #performance #identity #power #vibrant #largescale #paintings #color #abstracted #create #drawings #textures #colors #shapes #mixedmedia #painting #contemporary #contemporaryart

From Modern to Ultra-Contemporary, the 20th Century & Contemporary Art New York Day Sale on 15 November features an exceptional array of works. Highlights include Joan Brown’s Untitled, executed c. 1960; Lynne Drexler’s Untitled (Dark), painted in 1962; and Ilana Savdie’s Deliberate Rotation of The Nips, executed in 2021. Largely underrecognized during her lifetime, Lynne Mapp Drexler mastered a sophisticated fusion of colour, form and gesture which cements her today as one of the premier artists of the 20th century. @ilana_savdie you complete me 🫶 • Savdie often draws a parallel between the turmoil resulting from incremental moves toward fascism around the globe-such as the silencing, erasure, and violence faced by the most vulnerable communities-and the forces at play in the natural world. Under moments of duress, humans, like animals and other living organisms, recoil as a protective mechanism. Other responses, such as fighting or resisting, may cause a predator to tense up and tighten its grip on its subject. Savdie sees these biological impulses to contract or resist as mirroring reactions to the legacies of oppressive political climates, and her interest plays out here in formal terms. #ilanasavdie

In her exquisite large-scale paintings on exhibition at the Whitney, llana Savdie has created uncanny abstractions which consider how structures of power can be resisted, transgressed, and dismantled. She draws from the history of art as well as from folklore, human anatomy, microbiology, horror, and pop culture. Selecting imagery from these varied subjects, she stages surreal encounters, heightened by her use of texture and a striking colour palette: bile greens, oozing yellows, and delicate washes of pink press up against expansive fields of scaly beeswax. Bravo @ilana_savdie, a triumph! 👏👏👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #ilanasavdie #whitneymuseum #whitecube

When I moved to New York in 2021, one of the first gallery shows that I made an effort to see was Ilana Savdie’s *first solo gallery show* at Deli Gallery. It was the last day of the show, it was Easter Sunday, and I’m pretty sure it was my first time ever going to Bushwick (and maybe the first time I ever took the L train to Brooklyn?) What a different reality that feels like from the present one where her *first solo museum show* at the Whitney Museum of American Art is now on its final weekend. Funny enough, I think her show at Deli ended up on my radar in the first place because Scott Rothkopf, then chief curator and recently inaugurated director of the Whitney had posted about it on Instagram, and specifically drew attention to her use of encaustic. When an artist blows up as quickly as she does (or to use a favorite phrase of Artsy, “their star quickly rises”) it’s hard not to be a little skeptical — but by my assessment, she’s scaled up quite successfully, leading to more complex compositions that haven’t lost the looseness, command of a vibrant and intense color palette, and incredibly varied textures that necessitate in-person viewing. One of several young artists leading the charge of what I call “oblique figuration” (someone please come up with a better neologism, thanks), Savdie depicts figures in motion and flux, which emerge from and dissolve into abstracted forms. Her work is informed by her identity and cultural heritage, drawing on Colombian carnival celebrations, and suggesting a world in perpetual flux. On view in the Whitney’s lobby gallery (which is free!) through November 5th — stop in if you are gallery crawling in Chelsea this weekend! (Last 2 images are from the 2021 show at Deli). #IlanaSavdie #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #whitneymuseum #whitneymuseumofamericanart #whitney

The inaugural exhibition at @whitecube, titled 'Chopped & Screwed,' curated by Courtney Willis Blair, now concluded. The exhibition examined the use of sourcing and distortion in contemporary art as a means to question established systems of power and value. Featuring a diverse range of artists, the show engaged with themes of power dynamics, identity, and societal norms, aiming to offer alternative perspectives on both conditions of power and realities of living. Happy to be part of this show with a painting that is very dear to me, next to the work of artists I admire, and in the context of the Ballroom' s aniversary, it is a blast. This painting was shown in México at Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros as part of of site specific proyect around Siquiros muralism and curated by Willy Kautz. But due to the pandemic it happened with some difficulties. I feel so glad it is been shown again. You can visit at @ballroommarfa till march. . It's the last week to see Ilana Savdie: Radical Contractions in our free first floor gallery! We're excited to premiere a brand new podcast minisode in conjunction with the exhibition. In July, Savdie (@ilana_savdie) invited writer Carmen Maria Machado (carmenmmachado) to discuss their respective practices. In this excerpt from that program, Savdie and Machado discuss their overlapping interests, from power dynamics mediated through the body to trickery as a form of resistance. Don't miss Radical Contractions through Sunday, November 5, and listen to the minisode via the link in our profile. — #IlanaSavdie: Radical Contractions (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, July 14–October 19, 2023). “Ilana’s seductively gaudy palettes allow her to lean comfortably into kitsch, to decode the rules of taste and satisfy her own unruly aesthetic desires. Inspired by the environment of her hometowns, Barranquilla and Miami, these colors felt intoxicatingly arousing. As we look at the paintings, we find that paths are formed, stretched, cut off, or ultimately rerouted.” Thank you i-D and Margarita Lila Rose for the great review of Ilana Savdie’s exhibition “Radical Contractions” at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In Focus: Ilana Savdie, ‘Foul Attention’ (2023) at Paris+ par Art Basel (Stand D15) Using fluid, layered forms, Ilana’s compositional arrangements are a riot of parasitic, disassembled bodies, ungrounded and endlessly evolving. The artist uses colour to seduce and repel, and directly associates them with modes of dressing up, including drag and ‘queer’ space. ‘I respond to colour, spaces of ambiguity, the uncanny’, the artist has said. ‘I’m using language that permeates queer conversation.’ Click the link in our bio to explore the full presentation online. I suoi lavori sono stati presentati presso il Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Kunstraum Potsdam; Museum aan de Stroom, Anversa; Biennale B3, Francoforte; Galleria Golestani, Düsseldorf; Galleria Jack Barett, New York. #ilanasavdie #portrait #colombianartist #gruppoatipicoart #artgallery #artcollector #artarchive #painting

Welcoming @whitecube to New York! Its excellent inaugural exhibition “Chopped & Screwed” brings together work by Mark Bradford, Michael Armitage, Georg Baselitz, Julie Mehretu and others in a beautifully renovated 1930 neo-Federal style bank building on Madison Avenue. ✨ There are some great moments here. Danh Vo’s bronze cast of a 16th-century Christ figure hangs diagonally across the first floor from David Hammons’s 1988 “Air Jordan” - with Tiona Nekkia McClodden’s motorcycle, titled “The Lover, off the road (after Barbara)” ready to go in the middle of the gallery. On the second floor, Adrian Piper’s “Everything #5.1,” cuts a window into the wall inscribed with the words ‘Everything Will Be Taken Away.’ Curated by Courtney Willis Blair. #davidaltmejd #michaelarmitage #georgbaselitz #markbradford #theastergates #generalidea #robertgober #philipguston #davidhammons #monahatoum #christianmarclay #tionanekkiamcclodden. #juliemehretu #adrianpiper #popel #nathanielmaryquinn #carolrama #ilanasavdie #danhvo #whitecube
