Some particularly special early medieval paintings as well as one of my favorites Ingres "Comtesse d'Haussonville" (1845). Așa aș descrie și ziua de ieri, în care am celebrat această floare nobilă la @clubul_cartiledenisei , cu cartea "Palatul Magnolia" și coperta ei grozavă, cu lumânări "delicioase" de la @autor.ramonamarin , cu poze, tatuaje și cămăși cu magnolii și cu multe, multe râsete și discuții focoase.🌸 Cartea am întors-o pe toate părțile, personaj cu personaj, am vorbit și despre artă și am dat o tură (virtuală, dar astea-s detalii) până în New York, să vizităm Muzeul Frick. 🤭 Timpul petrecut la @humanitas_lipscani42 alături de fete a fost, ca de fiecare dată, o plăcere. Pentru că voi pleca pentru o perioadă destul de lungă din țară și nu voi mai fi prezentă fizic la clubul de carte, întâlnirea de ieri a fost mai emoționantă decât de obicei pentru mine. Am primit multă căldură și multe gânduri bune și am simțit cu adevărat susținere din partea acestui grup frumos, mai ales că mi-au promis că mă vor suna la întâlnirea 6 ca să pot fi prezentă.🥹 Dragile mele, Mă bucur că am avut șansa să depășim bariera ecranului și să ne cunoaștem personal, și mulțumesc @thereadingotter , @soaptedecarte și @readeronduty pentru asta! O frumoasă poveste despre artă, muză și societatea din America începutului de secol XX … cam așa aș descrie “Palatul magnolia”. Citită împreună cu @nonabgo , aleasă în special pentru coperta frumoasă și plăcută pentru povestea lui Lillian Carter - personaj inspirat din viața lui Audrey Munson, model pentru sculptori și pentru unele din cele mai faimoase statui din New York. Romanul îmbină 2 perspective: viața lui Lillian, autointitulata Angelica din anul 1919 și a Veronicăi, un tânăr model a cărei soartă o aduce în muzeul Frick, unde Lillian și-a petrecut câteva luni memorabile în slujba familiei. Așa. Povestea Angelicăi și viața familiei Frick mi-au plăcut mult mai mult decât scurtele incursiuni cu Veronica. Povestea celei dintâi a avut romantism, puțin mister, artă, frumusețe și personaje destul de bine conturate, care m-au făcut să citesc cu drag. Perspectiva Veronicăi a fost puțin forțată cu o poveste de dragoste trasă de păr și cu felul ei de a fi și a acționa absolut chestionabil. Nu ce trebuie, dar nici atât de rău încât să sar peste pagini 😅 Per ansamblu, cartea a fost o experiență frumoasă și Angelica mi-a dat câte puțin din tot ce căutam la o carte frumoasă. 😻 Sunt curioasă: ați citit-o? Closing night at the Frick Madison as the Frick moves back to its remodeled digs on Fifth Avenue! Joyous evening with sketching on the second floor – note happy, sketcher with her work! Couldn’t take any pictures in the galleries, but it was powerful to be in a room with the works of Goya, El Greco and Velasquez all keeping company. Plus - a treat to see so many portraits up close! I particularly like seeing what sketchy sweeping gestures are done for the folds in the clothing, the jewelry done with such a light touch, but when stepping back, make all the sense in the world. Of course there were the huge Fragonard Rocco lighthearted lovelies. What’s next for the Breuer building? Sothebys to take root here eminently. Shh… don’t tell! No photographs in the Frick. But do go to see the art work of Barkley L Hendricks. I couldn’t photograph his ‘White on White’ series that resides in their own gallery on the 4th floor. He captures the pose and posture of his subjects, with their stylish 1970’s street attire, perfectly. The Frick will be exiting the Breuer building in March, and the exhibits here now, will be gone after that. Mr Hendricks portraits will be dispersed to the winds. Whitney Museum of American Art (now the Frick Madison), 945 Madison Avenue, New York, 1964-66. Architect: Marcel Breuer (1902 Pécs HUN - 1981 New York) and Hamilton P. Smith (b. 1925-). 3. GALLERIES AND STAIRS Commissioned by the Whitney Board of Directors as a response to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum (1959), the gallery space is designed with a modular system that is flexible and adaptable, unlike Wright’s design. A suspended grid of coffered concrete panels in the galleries conceals utilities in the ceiling space above and offers a system of tracks for lighting and moveable modular partitions. The use by the Whitney, then the Met, now the Frick shows that whatever you exhibit looks good here. One of the highlights to a visit to the building is the brilliant stairway - made robustly from wood, stone, bronze, steel, and multiple finishes of concrete. One feels the compression and release of space in the stairway, in particular when it passes in front of large plate glass windows. Black and white images by the great Ezra Stoller (1915 Chicago - 1984 Williamstown) except for the portrait of Breuer by the window which is by Evelyne Burnheim. Whitney Museum of American Art (now the Frick Madison), 945 Madison Avenue, New York, 1964-66. Architect: Marcel Breuer (1902 Pécs HUN - 1981 New York) and Hamilton P. Smith (b. 1925-). 2. LOBBY The lobby is approached by passing through a concrete portal on the street, passing over a bridge above a sunken sculpture court, and through a concrete cube vestibule. Inside, there is a wonderful ceiling with repeated suspended circular light fixtures that looks as fresh now as it must have in 1966. One idea repeated over and over. Great. The walls back to the street are all glass. One can look back at the entrance sequence from the lobby which visually extends the space of the lobby all the way to the street edge. The interior has a strong material presence throughout: split bluestone floors - and textural exposed concrete that recalls, perhaps, the kind of concrete work that Auguste Perret pioneered at his Palais d’Iéna and was popular in this phase of 1960s Brutalism (1937; see comparison of images 9 and 10). Whitney Museum of American Art (now the Frick Madison), 945 Madison Avenue, New York, 1964-66. Architect: Marcel Breuer (1902 Pécs HUN - 1981 New York) and Hamilton P. Smith (b. 1925-). 1.EXTERIOR The original Whitney Museum was received with mixed reviews but can now be considered one of the strongest works of the era: bold, new, innovative, ahead-of-its-time: a monumental landmark with its own distinctive identity and weight. The volume is determined by establishing a sunken court at the Madison Ave side and extending successively larger cantilevers to reveal the interior volumes of galleries that increase in size towards the top of the mass. The facade is clad with flame-treated granite, dark gray with white veining. The stone plays off of exposed sand-colored concrete used expressively as a dividing wall at the party wall as well as a remarkable canopy-portal-bridge-sculpture that spans over the sunken court and leads into a solid-walled box of the vestibule. 🇫🇷Je me suis promené dans Central Park pour prendre de l’air un peu. Et vers 75th, je me suis dirigé vers le Frick Madison, qui abrite temporairement une partie de la belle collection Frick pendant la rénovation de musée. Mais quelle collection magnifique! Dès la sortie au 1er étage, vous rencontrez la salle Vermeer qui vous conduit vers la salle Van Dyck et ensuite Rembrandt. Si vous clignez les yeux, vous ratez le Jan Van Eyck. Au 2e, c’est Manet, Monet, Degas tout de suite (comme dans la plupart des collections privées). Et malgré le fait que je n’aime pas du tout le style Rococo, les grands tableaux et panneaux de Fragonard restent impressionnants. N’oubliez pas Whistler en sortant. Au 3e, ce sont mes maîtres italiens préférés - Veronèse, Titien et della Francesca. À voir absolument. Aucune photographie n’est autorisée et donc j’ai acheté une catalogue! 😂 🇬🇧 I walked around Central Park to get some air. Weather was nice. Then I made my way to 75th to the Frick Madison, which temporarily houses a part of the Frick collection while the museum is under renovation. And such a magnificent collection! Immediately on the 1st floor is the Vermeer room, leading into Van Dyck and then Rembrandt. If you blink, you’ll miss the Jan Van Eyck. On the 2F, it’s Manet, Monet and Degas right away (like in most private collections). And despite the fact that I do not like the Rococo style, Fragonard’s paintings and panels are indeed impressive. Do not forget Whistler on your way out. On the 3F are my favourite Italian masters - Veronese, Titian, della Francesca. It’s a must-see! Hier, il a plu. Il a plu sans répit. Le ciel, l'humeur, le désir, tout était gris. J'avais "pas envie". C'était une journée à s'enfermer dans un musée, à choisir un tableau, puis un morceau de tableau, à le contempler jusqu'à en oublier le reste de l'œuvre, jusqu'à saisir la beauté, la délicatesse, la singularité, la force de ce détail travaillé par le peintre. J'aime découper les tableaux en morceaux. En élire un et m'y plonger. Une fois de plus, c'est le détail qui vous parle et vous nourrit. Peindre ou écrire se résume à cela : observer, récolter le détail qui montre sans rien dire, qui laisse à l'autre la possibilité de se laisser envahir par l'émotion et de rebondir, heureux, repu, agrandi, dans les flaques, les klaxons, les frissons. Hier, au Frick Museum, qui, momentanément, est hébergé dans les locaux de l'ancien Whitney, j'ai choisi un Fragonard (un peu écœurant, un peu "boîte à bonbons"), et mon œil a zoomé sur un détail, une ombrelle rose plantée dans un buisson de fleurs et de feuilles. Un détail de rien du tout dans ce tableau baptisé "Love Letters". Et l'ombrelle m'a éclaboussée d'une émotion légère, parfumée. J'ai oublié l'imperméable qui goutte, les bottes qui font floc-floc et le nez qui éternue. Ce fut un long rayon de soleil que j'ai étiré, étiré pour chasser les nuages. Un morceau de tableau, un déjeuner avec une amie qui écrit, un dîner avec une autre amie qui voyage tout le temps et se demande ce qu'elle fuit, une journée gris souris, illuminée par une ombrelle posée par Fragonard dans le coin d'un tableau, dans le fouillis d'un buisson… #frickmuseum #fragonnard #newyork

The seven framed prints on the wall were done by Hasui Kawase (川瀬 巴水, Kawase Hasui, May 18, 1883 – November 7, 1957).He was an artist, one of modern Japan's most important and prolific printmakers. He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by Western art. Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting. Hasui designed approximately 620 prints over a career that spanned nearly forty years.
