Agneta and Lesley recently visited several UK prisons 🏛️, including HMP Lindholm in Doncaster, HMP Hollesley Bay, and HMP Chelmsford in Ipswich. These facilities are actively implementing Brain Smart training in collaboration with Unlock My Life. Developed by Agneta, the Director of Wellbeing at Jamma International, Brain Smart aims to support prisoners in managing their mental health. Unlock My Life (UML) is dedicated to fostering open discussions about mental health among offenders across the UK. During our three-day visit, we engaged in various activities, including training sessions during prisoner inductions at HMP Hollesley Bay and HMP Chelmsford. Additionally, we participated in a train-the-trainer session at HMP Lindholm, where prisoners learn to deliver the training themselves. Our visit also included joining a meeting of Mental Health Ambassadors. 🗝️ #UnlockMyLife #MentalHealthAwareness #BehindTheScenes #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #Wellbeing #LifeSkills #BrainSmart #Prision #MentalHealth #JammaInternational

Meet the Yellow-Billed Hornbill for #funfactfriday.🦜 Recognised by its distinctive downward-curved yellow beak. These ground-foraging birds hunt by seeking seeds, insects, and even scorpions. Surprisingly, they've been observed catching and killing snakes by bashing them against hard surfaces! During meals, yellow-billed hornbills swallow their prey whole and let indigestible parts pass through their system. They can be solitary creatures but are often found in pairs or small groups, showcasing their diverse social behaviours. Did you know that these hornbills engage in cooperative foraging with Dwarf Mongooses? As the mongooses scratch the ground, the hornbills seize the prey. In return, the hornbills act as vigilant protectors, alerting their partners to any potential threats from raptors🐜 #FactFriday #WildlifeWonders #YellowBilledHornbill #Biodiversity #AnimalBehavior #ConservationHeroes #WildlifeDiscovery #WildlifeConservation #ConservationMatters #Conservation #Planet #JammaInternational

Happy World Rhino Day 2023! 🌍🦏 Currently, there are 5 incredible species of rhinos on our planet 🌟The African white rhino, the African black rhino, the Sumatran rhino, the one-horned rhino, and the Javan rhino. Did you know that the white rhino is the second-largest land mammal in the world after the elephant... Or that the difference between a black and white rhino isn't their colour but the shape of their mouth! But that's not all here are some fun facts about rhinos: 🦏 A group of rhinos is known as a herd, or a crash! 🦏 Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same as our hair and nails.💅 🦏 Rhinos may not have great eyesight, but they have an incredible sense of smell, helping them navigate their surroundings.👃 🦏 Have you ever seen a rhino rolling around in the mud? It's not just for fun—it's their way of staying cool, avoiding irritating insect bites, and keeping those unwanted parasites at bay. But amid these intriguing traits, rhinos face serious challenges, including poaching and habitat loss, so let's use this day to raise awareness! #WorldRhinoDay #RhinoFacts #ProtectOurRhinos #ConservationMatters #Conservation #JammaImpact #Wellbeing #Community #Planet #People #Charity #JammaInternational

Greenpeace UK Visit 🌊 Last week, we had some great visitors at our Jamma office – Will McCallum the joint CEO and Chris Till, a fundraising manager from Greenpeace UK! During their visit, we had a fascinating presentation about the latest updates from their "30 by 30" campaign and learned about their exciting future plans🐋 Will and Chris also brought a token of appreciation thanking Jamma International for their support. What you can see is a fishing hook which was one of 286 found along a 30.2 km fishing line in the northern Atlantic, from two European industrial longline fishing vessels. Greenpeace UK took action, cutting the line and confiscating it and in doing so released a blue shark, a near-threatened species, and saved seven swordfish and other marine life. 🐟🦑 We're grateful for their visit and proud to support their important work. 🤝 Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to support impactful projects and work towards a more sustainable planet! #GreenpeaceUK #30by30Campaign #OceansProtection #ConservationMatters #Conservation #JammaImpact #Wellbeing #Community #Planet #People #Charity #JammaInternational

🦁🌍 Happy #WorldLionDay! 🌍🦁 As we celebrate these magnificent big cats, let's also reflect on the challenges they bring to communities in Africa. Human-wildlife conflict is a daily concern for most people in Africa. Can you imagine living in an area where lions roam freely, where every evening you are filled with both hope and worry? Hope that the lions won't harm your livestock or put your loved ones at risk during their daily activities. Also, worry that you may wake up to find your livelihood taken from you. For some communities in Africa, this is their reality. On this day, let's raise awareness about the importance of finding ways for lions and communities to coexist. Human-lion conflict, like most, is complex, but conservation efforts driven by community involvement are key to protecting these iconic species and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both humans and wildlife. #WorldLionDay2023 #HumanWildlifeConflict #Coexistence #ConservationMatters #ProtectOurWildlife #CommunityEngagement #WildlifeProtection #NatureLove #Conservation #Wellbeing #Community #Planet #People #Charity #JammaInternational

Meet the white-fronted bee-eater!🦜 🌿 Striking with bold, vibrant plumage, these colourful birds are as fascinating as they are beautiful. Let's dive into some fun facts about them: 🐝 True to their name, white-fronted bee-eaters love to feast on bees and other flying insects! With their needle-sharp beak, they catch their prey mid-air with incredible accuracy, making sure to avoid the painful sting! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 These birds are very sociable and live in large colonies, with group sizes ranging from 40 to 80! Their societies are one of the most complex among all birds. 🏠You can find them in Africa, ranging from Gabon to Uganda, all the way down to South Africa, nesting into riverbanks or gullies. 💕 White-fronted bee-eaters are monogamous and form life-long bonds with their partners. 🏡 These birds are sedentary, which means they stay in one place throughout the year. That's why their wings are more squared off and broader at the edges compared to migrant species. #WhiteFrontedBeeEater #ColorfulBirds #BirdWatchers #NatureFacts #DiscoverNature #WildlifeWonders #Biodiversity #AfricanBirds #FunFacts #FactFriday #ConservationMatters #Conservation #Wellbeing #Community #Planet #People #Charity #JammaInternational

They care for their young, communicate through unique vocalizations, and show unwavering loyalty to their pack mates. It's a true testament to the power of companionship. Happy Fact Friday! Have you ever heard of the African oxpecker? 🐦 These fascinating birds are native to the African continent and have a unique relationship with their mammalian hosts. There are two species, the yellow-billed oxpecker and the red-billed oxpecker depending on the colour of their beaks, the red-billed oxpecker also has bright yellow-ringed eyes! African oxpeckers can often be found perched on large mammals like cattle, zebras, and rhinos, where they use their sharp beaks to chow down on ticks, lice, and other pesky parasites 🦟🪰 But it's not just a one-way relationship. The oxpeckers also help their mammal friends stay healthy by getting rid of harmful parasites. It's a classic case of teamwork making the dream work, a true example of a symbiotic relationship in nature! 🌿 And that's not all - these clever birds have a unique warning call that they use to alert their hosts of any potential danger, such as approaching predators 🚨 So next time you're out exploring the African wilderness, keep your eyes peeled for these avian creatures.

Did you know that there are 3 species of zebra native to Africa? 🤔The plains zebra, Grévy's zebra, and mountain zebra. But that's not all, here are some fun facts about these creatures: 🦓 Each zebra's stripes are as unique as human fingerprints, and they can be used to identify individuals. 🦓 Zebras' black and white stripes are thought to serve multiple purposes such as helping regulate their body temperature, confuse predators, and keep biting insects away. 🦓 A group of zebras has not one, but two quirky names: you can call them a "zeal" or a "dazzle". It is named for the motion dazzle effect created by a group of running zebras. 🦓 The plains zebra is the most common species, roaming grasslands, and woodlands of eastern and southern Africa. Grévy's zebra on the other hand are endangered and on the IUCN Red List. #Zebra #FunFacts #FactsOfTheDay #Wildlife #NatureLover #AfricanAnimals #BlackAndWhite #Africa #Conservation #Planet #JammaInternational

African Buffalo are true powerhouses, weighing up to 1000 kg and charging at speeds of 35 mph🐃 They are known for their unpredictable and aggressive behaviour, making them one of the most dangerous animals in Africa – it’s no wonder they are part of the Big 5 of Africa! Outside national parks, these giants are considered pests, and are known to break fences, raid cultivated crops, and spread diseases to livestock🦠 Did you know they're also great swimmers and skilled grazers?🌱🌊 They often cross rivers in search of better grazing and when feeding buffalo uses both their tongue and wide incisor row to eat grass more quickly than other African herbivores. Sadly, habitat fragmentation is the greatest threat for buffalo, which is caused when land is divided by unsustainable development. #AfricanBuffalo #Big5 #BuffaloFacts #FactsOfTheDay #AfricanWildlife #Africa #Conservation #SavannahEcosystem #Planet #JammaInternational

This bird is not your average feathered friend. With its vibrant plumage of 8 different colours 🌈 and energetic acrobatics consisting of dives and swoops, it’s no wonder why it is called a lilac breasted roller! 🐦 And when it comes to romance, this bird doesn't hold back. The male Roller will go to great heights (literally!) to impress the female bird with an epic dive-bombing move while making a high-pitched noise. You can find this beautifully unique bird species in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and north-eastern South Africa. It is also Kenya’s national bird, with the multiple colours representing the various tribes of Kenya’s community. #LilacBreastedRoller #FactsOfTheDay #Wildlife #WildlifeFacts #ColorfulBirds #RainbowBird #AvianNinja #BirdsOfAfrica #Planet #Conservation #Africa #JammaInternational

This week Jamma visits the Rapid Response Unit project out in Mozambique, run by the @mozwildlifealliance (MWA) and partnered with @elephantsalive. MWA aim to promote coexistence among communities and elephants as well as create a platform for collaborative veterinary and conservation actions🐘👥 Human-elephant conflict arises when elephants ranging beyond the borders of protected areas raid crops 🌽and damage infrastructure, impacting the livelihoods of farmers and cattle ranchers. The Rapid Response Unit use non-lethal tactics to move elephants away from populated areas and agricultural land. These methods consist of firecrackers and chilli bombs 🌶 which scare the elephants off before the authorities are forced to use more lethal methods of control. MWA is seeing success through their work, by saving elephant lives and reducing the conflict drastically within the area. Take a look at some of the facilities they have and see what a tracking elephant collar looks like! 👉 @elephantsalive #RapidResponseUnit #HumanElephantConflict #HumanWildlifeConflict #Mozambique #Elephants #Coexistance #Conservation #Communities #Protect #Planet #JammaInternational

It’s world hippo day🦛 🦛These semi-aquatic mammals are native to sub-Saharan Africa and are the third largest land mammal on earth! 🦛To stay cool in the blistering African heat hippos, spend the majority of their time submerged in water. They also secrete an oily red liquid which helps protect their skin from drying out and acts as a sun block. 🦛Hippos are most active at night foraging for food. Did you know that they can consume up to 40kg of grass in a single night!😮 #WorldHippoDay #Hippo #wildlife #Africanmammals #factsoftheday #wildlife #conservation #planet #jammainternational

When you think of vultures what do you think of? 🤔 Most of the time vultures are overlooked and perceived as lowly scavengers. But did you know that they clean up 70% of Africa’s carrion. In doing so they prevent the spread of disease from carcasses which help protect species in their ecosystem including humans! And did you know that the characteristic featherless head of a vulture has been adapted to prevent the feathers being soiled when feeding on the inside of the carcass. In Africa there are 11 species of vultures. Unfortunately, more than half are either classified as endangered or critically endangered. Some of the main threats facing this species is rapid urbanisation and being a victim of poaching. Vultures are directly targeted by poachers for their heads which is used in traditional medicine, and when poaching other species. This is because flocking vultures to a carcass is a giveaway site of poacher’s activities 👀 #vulturefacts #factsoftheday #wildlife #africanwildlife #superbirds #scavengers #vultures #planet #conservation #africa #jammainternational

Elephants. Majestic, empathetic and the largest land mammal on earth! 😮 Did you know that Africa is home to two species of elephants, the African savanna and the African forest elephant? Here are a few interesting facts about them. 🐘The elephant’s trunk has up to 40,000 muscles, which helps them to suck up water for drinking, for trumpet warnings, touching and grabbing objects. 🐘Elephant tusks are actually teeth!🦷 They are connected to the skull and have nerve endings just like humans. Tusks serve many purposes including protecting the trunk, lifting and moving objects, gathering food, striping bark from trees and can also be used for defence. Once they are damaged or broken, they stay like that. #elephantfacts #factsoftheday #wildlife #africanwildlife #big5 #elephants #planet #conservation #africa #jammainternational

Excited to have finished my first week as an intern at Jamma International! Jamma is a philanthropic charity carrying out fantastic work in community and conservation projects in Southern and Eastern Africa. Annnnd I am offically part of the team! 😄🎉  It has been a long and tiring journey to get to this point, with constant applications and interview rejections. But I finally got the opportunity to pursue my passion. I can fully relate to all those experiencing rejection and being disheartened which I did a month ago. But do not give up, keep at it, and say yes to the opportunities that come your way even if they arent exactly your ideal position or are out of your comfort zone. #jammainternational #conservation #wildlifeconservation #africanconservation #conservationjob #community #communications #education #dontgiveup #makeadifference #conservationcareer #alisoninconservation

There are several subspecies of the notoriously elusive leopard. This one is the enigmatic predator that inhabits parts of Africa, called the cape leopard.   Did you know that cape leopards are the same species as the savannah or bushveld leopards, but just differ in size and behaviour?   One of the main threats to these leopard populations is illegal hunting using wire snares. This is driven by hunger, hunting for skins, and using body parts for traditional medicine. However, the @capeleopardtrust is carrying out vital conservation work in Western Cape, South Africa, to ensure the long-term survival of the species.   By focusing on a holistic approach, the Cape Leopard Trust not only addresses the threats to leopards, such as the human-wildlife conflict and prey-based depletion through snaring, but also education, and empowerment of local people to protect the natural world. This method is proving to be a critical part of conserving wildlife for generations to come.   📸 - Cape Leopard Trust #capeleopardtrust #leopardconservation #westerncape #southafricaconservation #jammainternational #humanwildlifeconflict #conservationeducation #conservingwildlife #protectingthefutureofnature

🎬 IT'S NOW OUT THERE!! First of all, let's talk about me as a cartoon & why I REALLY want that shirt in real life. SECONDLY & way more importantly, let's share what happened last night. After 2 private premiere's, last night was the first time ANYONE could join to watch #BeyondTheTrigger & engage in the Q&A. If you joined to watch, thank you so much. It means the world to me, Oscar & everyone who featured in the film. For me, to sit knowing that everyone was sat with friends or simply with a brew/beer/wine, in their home or at a friend's, watching on a TV, laptop, tablet or phone was an incredible feeling. If you were there, well done. I'm not patronise that you managed to find the link, I truly mean well done that you were able to say "sure I have my doubts or I don't like this, but I'm willing to listen to these people." It sounds like an easy thing to do but it actually isn't. I've said it 1000 times over the last 2 years, but the people that should be front & center of wildlife conservation are the people who live with it or are directly affected by it. We in the UK can want or ponder (love that word) about alternatives to trophy hunting, but if we are discussing them without including indigenous people of that country we are referring to (& remember, Africa ISN'T a country) then we are doing it wrong. A huge thanks to @buteblackbird for doing a fab job of hosting the Q&A, to @fabianharrison_ for running all the tech & to the legend that is @maxilouis2 for sharing some insights after the film. To watch the live version back, follow the link in our bio & the film itself without the Q&A will be available later today. Here's to open discussion 🤘🏻🌍💚
