Esta mañana recibimos de imprenta la 3ª edición de “La ignorancia de la ley no sirve de excusa” Derecho y Ciencia Política. Y, en las próximas horas, la 5ª de Educación Ciudadana. Fue un tremendo esfuerzo actualizar ambos materiales en los meses de enero y febrero. Se trató de un trabajo en equipo, todos/as ex – estudiantes, hoy colegas, dispersos por el mundo además de una querida amiga, docente, que los viene editando desde el inicio de este proyecto. El JUAN XXIII, que me vio crecer a mí y a toda esta barra, ha sido promotor inicial y sostenedor de este proceso, en palabras y en acciones, encarnando en las distintas personas tomadoras de decisiones, referentes y visionarios, que con mucha generosidad siempre dijeron que sí. Mucha gratitud con quienes hemos compartido este trayecto. Comparto un fragmento de la introducción común a ambas ediciones nuevas: — No tiene que ser verdad lo que todo el mundo dice. Tampoco tiene que ser justo lo que la norma establece. Y lo que fue bueno antes puede ser muy inconveniente en el presente. De eso se trata, de complejizar y comprender que, en la construcción del significante humanidad, siempre ha quedado gente afuera. Patria viene de padre. Nación de nacimiento. Y fraternidad de hermano. Que sea un tiempo de puentes, sin atajos ni ambigüedades, de ir a la verdadera raíz de las contradicciones y desafíos del presente. Despite the film being completed, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to ultimately scrap its upcoming Looney Tunes legal drama titled “Coyote vs Acme.” This decision was quickly reversed by the studio though, as cancelling the complete film led to a revolt from major industry insiders, while Texas representative Joaquin Castro even called for the Department of Justice, to look into the studios decision to see if it’s potentially predatory and anti-competitive as it’s widely believed that Warner Bros Discovery cancelled this film solely to utilize a tax cut loop hole. Despite Warner Bros Discovery uncancelling Coyote vs Acme the studio still has no plans to release the film. Warner Bros Discovery is currently looking to sell the film to another studio for them to release in theaters or put it on their own streaming services. With Coyote vs Acme, officially coming out and Warner Bros Discovery trying to entice other studios to pick up the film, they released the first still to showcase potential audience interest. Latinx representation in publishing is improving every year but we still have a long way to go in seeing more Latinx talent in the industry including writing, illustration, book production, and more. As we know, there is often nothing more powerful than seeing characters like us in the pages of the books we love. But finally it seems our community is taking things into our own hands. Last week we saw the launch of The Latino Representation in Publishing Coalition (LRPC), a collective of seven Latinx-led organizations that will work to improve Latinx representation in the industry. This means advocating for change in what they’re publishing and how they hire Latinxs in company leadership and staff. The coalition is supported by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), who recently was instrumental in nominating 27 Latinx movies to the National Film Registry. The seven organizations involved in the LRPC include Dignidad Literaria, Latino Corporate Directors Association, Latinx in Publishing, The Latinx House, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, National Association of Latino Independent Producers, and the National Hispanic Media Coalition, according to a press release from the National Hispanic Media Coalition. The Latinx community has had a tricky and complicated relationship with the film industry in the U.S. since the beginning. If we aren’t being excluded, we are included only on specific terms, like as background characters, stereotypes, comedic relief, or the sidekick, rarely the main characters let alone fully developed ones. And yet, we have decades of beautiful, rich movies made by and for us. This week, Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have honored that history, nominating a historic 27 Latinx films to potentially be inducted into the National Film Registry including Stand and Deliver, Frida, and Like Water for Chocolate. This could be a groundbreaking moment, especially considering that despite the Latinx community making up 20 percent of the U.S. population, only 3 percent, or 24, of the Registry’s 850 movies are about Latinx experiences, according to the Library of Congress. Congressman Joaquin Castro marked the one-month anniversary of his cancer surgery by taking to social media Monday evening to thank well-wishers. “Thank you to everyone — friends, strangers and even some folks who can’t stand my politics — who’ve reached out,” the San Antonio Democrat wrote on his official Facebook page. Castro, 48, had surgery at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center on Feb. 27 to remove tumors in his gastrointestinal tract. “After 10 days in the hospital in Houston I got home to San Antonio to recover,” Castro wrote in Monday’s Facebook post. She's my personal hero when I think about the kind of mom I want to be for Santi and the way I want to help him see and understand the world.
