. . . . #JohnCage #MúsicaExperimental #RecolecciónDeHongos #Hongos #Naturaleza #433 #academia433 #cursosonline #musicaexperimental #artecontemporaneo #arteconceptual #arte #musica #poesia #performance #martinbauer #johncagesilence #masterclassdemusica

Steve Reich – Four Organs / Phase Patterns I really love the Four Organs work on the A side of this Steve Reich album, but not everyone agrees. When the piece was performed at Carnegie Hall in 1973 it nearly caused a riot, with yells for the music to stop. One of the performers, Michael Tilson Thomas, recalls: “A woman walked down the aisle and repeatedly banged her head on the front of the stage, wailing ‘Stop, stop, I confess.’” If you’re interested in the concept of this music, here is the explanation from Wikipedia. Swipe to hear a clip from the beginning and end of the work. The four organs harmonically expound a dominant eleventh chord (E–D–E–F♯–G♯–A–B), dissecting the chord by playing parts of it sequentially while the chord slowly increases in duration from a single 1/8 note at the beginning to 200 beats at the end. The process of increased augmentation is accomplished first by causing notes to sustain after the chord, and then notes start anticipating the chord. As the piece progresses, this “deconstruction” of the chord emphasizes certain harmonies. At the climax of the work, each tone sounds almost in sequence. A continuous maraca beat serves as a rhythmic framework. Reich describes the piece as “the longest V–I cadence in the history of Western Music”, the V and I chords being contained within the one chord. “You’ll find the chord in Debussy and Thelonious Monk – the tonic on top and the dominant on the bottom.”[1] He has cited the music of Pérotin and other twelfth- and thirteenth-century composers as suggesting the technique of note augmentation used in Four Organs. For performances of the piece, Reich recommended using electronic organs with as plain and simple a timbre as possible, without vibrato, to avoid the sound of the instrument itself distracting from the harmonic and rhythmic aspects of the piece. Reich himself employed four Farfisa “mini compact” models. #ambient #classical #minimalism #avantgarde #avantgardemusic #minimalmusic #johncage #stevereich #philipglass #fourorgans #farfisa

John Cage & Marcel Duchamp - 27’10.554” For A Percussionist/The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even. Erratum Musical (1977). Percussionist Donald Knaack journeying deep into the Avant-Garde on Turkish composer İlhan Mimaroğlu’s Finnadar Records, and what a strange and wonderful trip it is! First up is Marcel Duchamp’s ‘The Bride Stripped Bare’, composed using large funnels, numbered wooden balls and five open connected wagons! Right On! Played on a variety of glass instruments, including a glass rod xylophone, glass maracas, wine glasses and bottles all designed with the intention to suppress any virtuoso tendencies! The piece is spartan and insect like, low hums from the twelve different types of wind chimes mingling in with the clicks and clacks of the glass percussion. It’s like a shopping trolley crashing down a well stocked aisle of various cans and bottles but in slow, uber-slow, motion! Weird and obtuse but also fantastically compelling and engaging! Knaack then tackles Cage’s ‘27’10.554” For A Percussionist’. As you would expect from Cage there are periods of long, pregnant silences intermingling with brief and broken, sometimes violent, eruptions of sound from ‘new instruments, found objects and alterations of standard percussion instruments’. There is also a tape element to this piece, created on a Moog Percussion Trigger, which further serves to disorientate and discombobulate! Hypnotic, bracing and complex, both pieces of music seem to be edging up to something without ever quite revealing what that something may be! Challenging for sure but a sound world well worth getting lost in! #records #vinyl #vinylrecords #johncage #marcelduchamp #donaldknaack #ilhanmimaroglu #finnadarrecords #percussion #percussionmusic #avantgarde #avantgardemusic #composer #moderncomposition #experimentalmusic #moog #avantgardecomposition #experimental #wineglass #glass #glassinstrument #contemporary #contemporarymusic

There's a new Fri-YAY email hitting inboxes today... Check out my stories for the links to the videos. [Fri-YAY] As Graphic As It Gets 😉 I first met Jason Barabba (@bah.rah.bah) when he was the composer-in-residence for the Phoenix-based Oh My Ears Festival (@ohmyearsmusic) in January 2018. Whew, that feels like a lifetime ago now, doesn't it? This OME performance still brings a smile to my face because the amazing organizers were entirely game to let me live out my dream of a "new music slumber party." There we were: it was a balmy evening in Phoenix, we were all sitting on a church lawn, cuddling and bolstering ourselves with blankets and pillows. There was even a cereal and milk bar! It was the first time I premiered any of the compositions written for the Sleep Songs collection. A good time was had by all. After that performance, Jason and I wound up talking about our shared love for graphic scores, including John Cage's "Aria." That conversation was the catalyst for his work "Phonetical Lullaby" for unaccompanied voice (of any type) using the International Phonetic Alphabet. Now, there's a whole music video, a mini-masterclass for any musicians who want some more insight into performing the piece, and inclusion on my final Sleep Songs album. My gratitude goes out to Jason for writing this work and dedicating it to me, as well as to Nick Zoulek (@nickzoulek | @nz_media_) for his incredible videography and recording work. I hope you'll take a listen, give the videos a like and a share, and buy the score to perform at your own "new music slumber party"—especially if you're hoping to make it slightly more graphic... 😉 #mezzosoprano #musicvideo #graphicscore #composer #solovoice #unaccompaniedvoice #ohmyears #sleepsongs #lullaby #johncage

On a day like today, Erik Satie was born 158 years ago. 🎹✨ Satie played #piano in Montmartre’s cabarets and cafés, entertaining people with popular music before fame. He was a master of creating #mood and atmosphere in pieces like #Gnossiennes and #Gymnopédies . His music is simple but captivating, influencing the #minimalist music movement with its repetitive patterns. One of his most famous works is “Gymnopédies,” three piano pieces from 1888 that are calming and perfect for #relaxing. He loved humor in his music, giving his pieces quirky names like “Three Pieces in the Shape of a Pear.” Satie worked with famous artist #PabloPicasso on the ballet “Parade,” and the writer #JeanCocteau and choreographer #LéonideMassine . His unconventional music inspired the #Dada and #Surrealist art movements, which were all about breaking traditional rules. His music #scores often had odd instructions, like “play like a nightingale with a toothache,” adding to his unique style. Satie’s simple yet innovative music influenced many later composers, including #ClaudeDebussy and #JohnCage. He composed pieces without bar lines and with unconventional #timesignatures , challenging traditional ways of playing, but also offering pianists a freeform way to play. For #pianists into experimental techniques, his unusual piano #tunings and playful instructions are very inspiring and definitely worth exploring!✨

📢 Exciting Addition for Summer School 2024 ☀️ ‘Niður, an Icelandic Circus on Ljósagangur’ - An installation and performance of a composition by John Cage! Come witness the first Icelandic version of John Cage’s 1979 composition, Circus On, which originally used Joyce’s Finnegans Wake to transform a book into a musical performance Roaratorio, An Irish Circus On Finnegans Wake. A book is transformed into a performance by re-writing it in its entirety as mesostic poetry – a form invented by Cage similar to acrostic poetry but with stringent rules–recording all of the music, sounds, and places mentioned in the book and adding relevant music. The final combination of all of this is then decided using chance. In this Icelandic version, Skerpla, Experimental Sound Lab from the Iceland University of the Arts, Reykjavik, led by Professor Berglind Tómasdóttir, working with Glasgow University PhD candidate and Cage specialist, Victoria Miguel, have transformed Dagur Hjartarson’s novel, Ljósagangur, a science fiction love story about a mysterious sound that can be heard in the city of Reykjavík, into an installation and hour-long live musical performance. 🗓️ Tuesday 18 June 2024 – Glasgow University Chapel Installation: 5pm Performance: 7.30pm Reserve your FREE place 👇 🔗 Click Link in Bio @iceland_university_of_the_arts #circus #summerschool #summerschool2024 #installation #performance #composition #finneganswake #johncage #irishcircus

Mel Bochner, Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to be Viewed as Art, School of the Visual Arts, 1966 In the fall of 1966, Mel Bochner, then an instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, was asked to organize a Christmas show. The show was to run from December 2 to 23, 1966. Bochner asked artists he admired—such as Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Sol LeWitt, Eva Hesse, Dan Graham, Jo Baer, Robert Moskowitz, Robert Smithson, Al Jensen, and others—for drawings that weren’t necessarily ‘works of art.’ Bochner was left to find a solution to present these drawings after the gallery dismissed funding for the show, claiming they had “no money to frame them.” The process: - Bochner photographed each drawing. - He used the school’s Xerox machine to print the drawings. - He created four books with the arranged drawings in alphabetical order. - The frontispiece included a floor plan with measurements of the gallery, and the final page featured a diagram of the Xerox machine. - He placed each book on a white wooden pedestal that reached table height at reading level. - No chairs were provided, forcing viewers to stand hunched over. Bochner did not aim to please the viewers; instead, he wanted them to feel a certain level of discomfort. “Working Drawings was not about the work, but rather it was a conceptual art of process located in the development of ideas.”1 1. The six S.M.S. boxes published in 1968-69 by artist and gallerist William Copley (1919-1996), under his imprint The Letter Edged In Black Press, are treasure troves of artist multiples that show the range of Copley's interests and the breadth and quality of his relationships within the art world. Such is the line-up of artists that many of the boxes have been butchered, with pieces by the more famous names extracted by the unscrupulous and sold individually for high prices. (Fortunately, the boxes I have acquired are complete and will be preserved as such). S.M.S. Issue No. 4 from August 1968 is a fine example. It includes a folded vinyl hat by Roy Lichtenstein (1-2); John Cage's 'Diary: How to Improve the World (you will only make matters worse) continued 1968' (3-4, note his prescient comment re fossil fuels versus renewables); Robert Watts' Parking Meter Sticker (5); On Kawara's 100 Year Calendar (6, pictured folded in the box with its cover design by Robert Stanley); and a tape by LaMonte Young (not pictured). The contents (7) also demonstrate Copley's international perspective including, untranslated, six poems by the Italian artist Mimmo Rotella written clandestinely during the five months he was imprisoned in Rome in 1964 for possession of marijuana.

“A blooming & sacred heart” oil based paint on Belgian linen. “Everything is in the studio; your past, your friends, the art world, but above all, your own ideas are there. As you continue painting, they start leaving one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then if you are lucky, even you leave”. TASTE AMERICAN MUSIC! #marketingdigital #innovacion #creatividad #estrategiadigital #agenciademarketing #johncage #punkmedia

In 1995 I had the privilege of working with master lithographer #FredGenis, with whom I made two lithographs titled Magical Decoy No I & No II. Curated by Professor Pedram Khosronejad in honour of Fred’s exceptional legacy, a comprehensive exhibition is now on display at Grafton Regional Gallery. ‘A PRINTER’S PROOF: The Fred Genis Collection. An exhibition of prints from master lithographer Fred Genis who collaborated with leading artists from around the world during his forty year career. A Printer’s Proof celebrates the art of lithography, the special bond formed between artist and printer, and the remarkable life and legacy of Fred Genis.’ During his forty-year career Fred worked in the United States, Europe, and Australia, collaborating with leading artists from around the world. His working life spanned monumental eras in the 20th Century art including the American Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1960s and 70s New York, where he worked with artists such as #RobertRauschenberg , #WillemDeKooning , #SamFrancis , #JohnCage , and #JamesRosenquist .
