In 2011, the Georgian government proposed a plan to build a city/settlement under the name of #Lazika on the coast of the Black Sea , near the port of Poti. The proposed plan was purposely projected to be on the coast as that was the ancestral land to many Laz and testimonial to the relentless masters of the sea in which the Laz were known for. Unfortunately as concerns grew about environmental consequences of building Lazika amongst some other governmental shifts, the proposal was never finished. However, within the Georgia government they have promised to resume the plan and to make it happen as time moves forward. It seems to be vital the Laz continually build off of the lost history with ideas like this. Georgians and Laz living inside how can Georgians, Laz, and others in the diaspora support this plan and others like it? The flag has a blue field with a green horizontal stripe and white fimbriation in the lower part of the flag. Above the stripe in the centre is the borjgali which is an old Georgian and Lazian symbol. The blue represents the Black Sea. The green represents the nature of Lazistan and Mingrelia. @karadumann.alaattin playing the kemençe • The kemençe is a bottle-shaped fiddle from northern Turkey • •~Follow for more daily (ish) uploads~• • The kemençe, also called the Pontic lyra, is a three-stringed small bottle shaped fiddle. Its name is derived from the Persian kamanche (کمانچه) meaning ‘little bow’. This instrument is played dominantly in the music of ‘Laz’ to accompany dances such as horon, a characteristic dance of the Black Sea inspired by the movements of the small hamsi fish. The word horon comes from choros (χορός) which means dance in Greek. The Laz, who lived alongside the Pontic Greeks and shared many cultural similarities, are a minority population in the eastern Black Sea area. Their language belongs to the Kartvelian language family and the history of the Laz goes back to the Kingdom of Colchis. Ottomans named this region ‘Lazistan’. • The kemençe is referred to as the ‘Turkish influenced lyra’ by the Met Museum. A theory suggests that it was a local adaptation of a fiddle which Cuman-Kipchak and the Chepni tribes used to play in the area. On the other hand, the kemenche may be result of the natural development of an instrument which had, at once time, an elongated water gourd for its body. • This is a very diverse region. The Greeks on the west Anatolian coast established Greek colonies in the Pontus. The Pontus region was already settled by indigenous Anatolians who were hostile to the Greeks. The province of Rize is also home to the Hemshin people, an Ethnic Armenian people group. Turkic influence of the region began with the migrations of the Cuman-Kipchaks. Cumans had an ethnic composition unique amongst Turkic peoples with blonde hair and blue eyes. They raided the Byzantine Empire alongside the Pechenegs but later they were hired by the Byzantine emperor. In 1071, Cumans participated in the Battle of Manzikert as mercenaries in the Byzantine army and fought against the Seljuks. They defected to the Seljuk side later. • During the population exchange in 1924, Christian Pontic Greeks were sent to Greece and the Muslim Pontic population remained. The Pontic refugees took the kemençe with them to northern Greece. • • •

Laz is a Kartvelian language, closely related to Georgian, spoken predominantly in the provinces of Rize and Artvin in Turkey, along the Black Sea. The above is “I love you” in the dialect spoken in Hopa, Artvin province, and transliterates to “Ma si kqorop”. The K and P are pronounced with distinct aspiration, or a puff of air after them.
