You plant peeps seem to be pretty into the tissue culture plants I posted earlier so here are a few more from my first trip to our lab. 1 - a little test tube begonia, I can't remember the variety. 2-3 are hedychium gingers with some nice roots wrapping around the jar. 4 is little baby oxalis rusciformis. 5 are sinningias I think and 6 is Begonia Madame Queen which end up getting huge! I have one amazing smelling jasmine flower. It is so hard to grow tropical flowers here in the northern cold climate due to the cold and lack of substantial amounts of sunlight that you have in the tropics. I absolutely miss tropical flowers and wanted to grow some. @logeesplants did a wonderful job sending me this. I had to baby it a lot to get it established and it also didn’t help that Snowy, our cat, found the leaves tasty. Jade Vine💎 Bow down to the queen of the bean family! These are the extraordinary blooms of the Jade Vine, Strongylodon macrobotrys. Not only is the stark turquoise coloration intoxicating, but also rare. Less than 10% of flowers have a blue color. On top of that, these flowers are quite big. Each flower is up to 3in long and the entire pseudoraceme (last photo) can be over 4ft long. The Jade Vine is a member of the fabaceae family, which is the plant family that contains all legumes (true beans). This unique plant is endemic to the Philippines, and very rare in the wild. It’s considered endangered as its native habitat is lost to deforestation. However, it is becoming more availability through cultivation. I’ve only ever seen this plant in bloom once before, many years ago. I didn’t know much about plants then, but I was still in awe over this one. Thought we’d go to Logees @logeesplants on this cold, wet (almost) end of the year day, and it was great as it was the final day of their holiday lights in the greenhouse and gnome scavenger hunt….The kids loved it! We didn’t find all the gnomes though as they were hidden pretty well in the 3 greenhouses but we were pretty happy just trying to find them all..I of course can’t go to Logees without buying something 🤦♀️🤪and their orchid section was looking pretty amazing so I picked up a Brassolaeliocattleya Amy Wakasugi….i cant wait for this one to bloom as not only is it absolutely gorgeous, it apparently smells sweet and jasmine like and that sounds heavenly. I took cuttings from my Isla, Variegated Calamondin, at the beginning of September. Three of the six cuttings I took have rooted, and I potted them into a started pot of 5-1-1 over the weekend. A couple have also flowered! I've found what works for me when rooting citrus cuttings. And it's also working for me for other plants, like blueberries. I root them inside, on a heat mat, with a nice perlite heavy mix, under a grow light with either a humidity dome over them or placed into a gallon/quart zipper bag. Two months later, I have roots! So here are the three cuttings. They get to hang out under my seed starting grow lights, since I'm not starting seeds right now. Win-win. It's nice to have these little side projects now that I'm basically stuck in the house for the next 3.5 months. Having an indoor citrus orchard keeps me busy, happy, and fights off Seasonal Affective Disorder! There are over 100 fruits on my trees, and dozens and dozens of newly set flower buds. Now that’s #alotofpassion ! This gargantuan #passionfruit was waiting patiently on the #carambola tree when we arrived at our southern home for the season. It’s the largest I’ve ever seen. The tree was one I purchased from #logees 6 or so years ago. And it is absolutely covered in bloom again!
Isla, my Variegated Calamondin, has been staring down her 3rd birthday with me. That'll happen next week. But, in the nearly 3 years she has been here she hasn't grown all that much. I know the growth habits of calamondin trees, on their own roots, won't see them get all that massive, but I figured she would've at least been about twice as big as she is. At least. Part of that may be that she typically lives indoors year round. But she's been summering on our front porch this year, and still not a whole lot is going on. She had some branch die back this summer, and I pruned those out last month. I also did some maintenance pruning, because I wanted to take some cuttings, and try to root them. Maybe starting over, with a new rooted cutting, will provide different results. I'm also planning to take Isla out of her pot, and see how her roots look. That may give me an idea of how she's truly doing. But this post is about those cuttings I took almost 1 month ago. I took six and I have 3 really good options; one of them has not only pushed new growth, but has also already set a flower bud! Now, obviously, that bud probably won't even open up, but it's nice to see when you're trying to root a cutting, right? Anyway, the bud, and new growth, are so tiny and cute, so I wanted to share! I'll update again when I eventually pot up the survivors. Probably at the end of this month, or early next month. There's no rush as I'm rooting them in my basement, on a heat mat, under seed starting grow lights. My fire fern (oxalis hedysaroides “rubra”) is in full bloom! I love the contrast between the ruby red leaves (which actually move fast enough to see on their own) and bright yellow flowers! I wanted the first one so bad…it’s absolutely amazing and puts my two to shame. …sigh one day.
