I took cuttings from my Isla, Variegated Calamondin, at the beginning of September. Three of the six cuttings I took have rooted, and I potted them into a started pot of 5-1-1 over the weekend. A couple have also flowered! I've found what works for me when rooting citrus cuttings. And it's also working for me for other plants, like blueberries. I root them inside, on a heat mat, with a nice perlite heavy mix, under a grow light with either a humidity dome over them or placed into a gallon/quart zipper bag. Two months later, I have roots! So here are the three cuttings. They get to hang out under my seed starting grow lights, since I'm not starting seeds right now. Win-win. It's nice to have these little side projects now that I'm basically stuck in the house for the next 3.5 months. Having an indoor citrus orchard keeps me busy, happy, and fights off Seasonal Affective Disorder! There are over 100 fruits on my trees, and dozens and dozens of newly set flower buds. Isla, my Variegated Calamondin, has been staring down her 3rd birthday with me. That'll happen next week. But, in the nearly 3 years she has been here she hasn't grown all that much. I know the growth habits of calamondin trees, on their own roots, won't see them get all that massive, but I figured she would've at least been about twice as big as she is. At least. Part of that may be that she typically lives indoors year round. But she's been summering on our front porch this year, and still not a whole lot is going on. She had some branch die back this summer, and I pruned those out last month. I also did some maintenance pruning, because I wanted to take some cuttings, and try to root them. Maybe starting over, with a new rooted cutting, will provide different results. I'm also planning to take Isla out of her pot, and see how her roots look. That may give me an idea of how she's truly doing. But this post is about those cuttings I took almost 1 month ago. I took six and I have 3 really good options; one of them has not only pushed new growth, but has also already set a flower bud! Now, obviously, that bud probably won't even open up, but it's nice to see when you're trying to root a cutting, right? Anyway, the bud, and new growth, are so tiny and cute, so I wanted to share! I'll update again when I eventually pot up the survivors. Probably at the end of this month, or early next month. There's no rush as I'm rooting them in my basement, on a heat mat, under seed starting grow lights. A few days ago, I moved my citrus trees into their final assigned seats for the summer. Well, I may say "final," but if I don't think they're thriving, or would do better in a different location, I won't hesitate to move them. But for now, this is it! The trees are taking up more of our deck because they are bigger than they were last year. I think I can feel pretty good about how I take care of them. They are thriving and growing more and more each year! My oldest citrus trees are turning 3 this summer. I'm going to have to seriously start learning about root pruning and maintenance here soon, though. Because some of the trees are in their "Forever Home" pots and I don't want them to become pot bound and suffer. Isla, my Variegated Calamondin tree, arrived here a dainty little pricess. She was about 6-8 inches tall, with a baby fruit attached. That was in October 2020 and she hasn't really wanted to get much bigger than that! She might be only a foot tall now, but continues to bush out, set buds, and flower happily. But the thing is, with Isla, is that she's the only tree of mine that is still in the house. Last summer, I had her outside with everyone else, and she didn't seem to like it there. There was no new growth, no buds, no nothing. The summer sun and heat didn't seem to agree with her. And sometimes it be's like that. That's why, this year, she hasn't left the house. She found a home in our kitchen garden window, that protrudes from the south side of the house. There, she gets plenty of sun, and is happy. She's gone through several rounds of buds, since January, and is doing it again right now. We might experiment with setting her on our covered front porch. It's mostly shade up there, on the north side of the house. It's where I transition new trees to full sun, after potting them into 511 mix. But maybe I won't her at all. If it aint broke... My citrus flock has finished their acclimation process so I placed them in their assigned seats for the rest of the season. Well, at least for now. I'll try out this "seating chart" and see if it works, and if not, I'll tweak it a little, as necessary. I put the fruiting trees in the middle, surrounded by some of the bigger trees. This is a strategy to keep the thieving squirrels at bay. They've been known to rip off growing Meyer Lemon fruits, and both Meyer Lemons have fruits, as does my Calamondin tree, so I'll keep an eye out, along with making good use of organza bags, to protect my trees. We shall see! My first variegated Calamondin! It's more of a houseplant that a real shrub or tree. I love variegated plants, particularly if there are various shades of green and the light parts are almost white. Calamondin doesn't have the greatest colors compared to variegated pink lemon trees, but they're still pretty. Calamondins are like little baby oranges on the inside. The peel is dark green with lighter green stripes that lighten up to a very light spring green. It packs a bitter bite, not quite a lemon but not quite an orange either. I acquired this plant just before COVID gripped the world, so it's interesting that it produced its first fruit just as requirements nationwide were being lifted. A promising sign of renewal that so many people need right now? Feeling low? I showed y'all Isla, my Variegated Calamondin, and what I thought was her first bud since she's been here. But it was actually her 4th! I went and found 3 others after I posted that picture! The flowers blended in with her variegated leaves, especially since so many of them have more cream coloring in them than my other variegated citrus trees. In any case, that bud, and the other 3, I showed you has dropped the petals and has now revealed a teeny, tiny baby fruit. And I don't know about y'all, but baby citrus fruits are just so adorable to me. You can even see some variegation on one of them as well! And there are even 3 *more* buds forming. Isla now gets to decide what she wants to keep. I'll keep y'all posted either way! Taking a look at some of the plants overwintering at the farm and this guy jumped out at me. This variegated calamondin orange is one of my favourite patio plants out at the farm. It holds its own as a foliage plant in a planter and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a variegated ficus benjamina. However, it’s very forgiving of changes in temperature and sun exposure, think less leaf drop. The flowering and fruiting typically aren’t as heavy as with the non-variegated forms, which shocks no one, but definitely throws in a bit of wow factor, especially when you’re just poking around and not looking for it. After 15 months with us, and minimal growth, Isla, my Variegated Calamondin finally has a bud about to bloom! When first got here, in October 2020, she already had the cutest little fruit on her. My husband and I bought this variegated calamansi plant in a 6inch pot at Home Depot when we first moved in our current home. It took 5 years for this plant to fruit. But I must say it is well worth the wait. Citrus update! 1. Now that’s a big thorn on my Tarocco blood orange! This tree is growing like crazy! I can’t believe how much it’s grown since I bought it. I only wish all others were that happy 😁 2. Variegated Calamondin is pretty but not really growing. I moved it to the deck with most of the citruses, hopefully more sun helps it get going. 3. Kishu decided to drop all but these two fruits. Well, as you can see, all except one, because yellow is a goner as well. These tiny fruitlets smell like a mandarin rind 🤩 at least I get to enjoy smelling them, if not eating! 4. And this is round two of flowering for my Borneo Rangpur Lime! Mother Nature made sure we all knew who was in charge this month, but now I think she's done with all the theatrics. The weather has stablized to highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s, so on Sunday, alllllll of my citrus trees got evicted from my house. I didn't have to twist their limbs. They've been wanting out for a while now. So now that's how they're living. A few of them are on the front porch which is shaded for 90% of the day. And the rest of them are on the back deck, underneath a garden umbrella, where they're completely shaded. I'm giving them about a full week of shade before I slowly start to give them sunny sessions. I am doing it this way instead of the "citrus shuffle" I did in the fall where I was carrying them in and out of the house morning and night, every day. That's a lot of work and I have doubled my collection, so I'm not doing that ever again. After a few weeks of transition, I am repotting everybody. My trees took anywhere from 4-7 weeks to dry out after each watering this winter and that's unacceptable to me as a resident helicopter plant mom who wants to water regularly. They'll all be moving to a super well draining 5-1-1 mix. If that helps get the winter watering time down to every 2-3 weeks, then that's what I'll consider a success. Cici, my Cara Cara orange is the star of the family. It’ll be obvious which one she is in the picture/video. So, after yesterday's post about Isla's little calamondin fruit being ready, I actually picked it today. My mom and I split it and squeezed it into our respective containers of water. It gave a nice, subtle yet refreshing, and citrusy burst to our water. I know it's good for us too. So we enjoyed it, and it'll be a long, long time before we have any more. Isla has barely grown any leaves since she's been here. I suspect she'll start to spread her wings, once we get her outside for the season. And, for good measure, I took the 2 seeds, from the fruit, peeled the coat off, and stuck them in a damp paper towel. Maybe I can get these to germinate?! I've been watching the lone fruit on my baby variegated calamondin tree, Isla, turn from her vareigated green stripes to yellow over the past month. And after consulting the fine folks in the Growing Citrus In Containers Facebook group, I now believe that it is indeed ripe. Isla came in a 2.5" pot, via Logee's, and had the most adorable fruit already growing when she was delivered back in mid-October. I figured if she couldn't sustain it, after her travels to her new home, she would boot it off the island. But instead, she kept the little fruit around and I guess it's ready for us to do something with it! All I can think of is squeezing it into some nice, cold water. Maybe squeeze it into an ice tray to use in water later? I don't know. Any ideas for just one calamondin? In any case, #SwipeLeft to see what Isla and her fruit used to look like, compared to today! Limonsito nga Kabang Tiny watermelons? Nope, this is a variegated Calamansi, that my grandparents had planted in the 90's. This taste just the same as the normal Calamansi, which you can buy in the market—it's just the color made it unique and different. This particular variegated calamansi was marcoted from the original plant that was planted by my grandparents. I'm all about the progress reports when it comes to my citrus babies. And since I truly do have a "baby" in the house now, what better time to show y'all some updates than with little Miss Isla, my new variegated calamondin orange tree. Her tiny orange still hasn't fallen off, so I guess that means she's healthy! But in any case, I bottom watered Isla 4 days ago. She's the only tree I can water that way, unfortunately, but it seemed to agree with her! I came back last night, to hover like the helicopter mom that I am, and noticed a bit of growth coming from her main stem. I tried to take some pictures, and I think you can see it. It's hard to zoom in when the growth/buds are super tiny. But I'm pretty sure y'all can tell. Today was repot day for Isla. She had been in her tiny nursery post for about a week, so I thought it was time for her to move up to her permanent pot. I'm convinced the Miracle Gro Cactus Mix has been the culprit for my little fungus gnat situation. I had heard stories, took a chance, and now I have stories of my own. Never again. So this time around, I ordered Espoma's Cactus Mix for this repotting. I mixed in some Diatomaceous Earth juuuuust in case. Our kitchen window is actually a garden window, on the south side of our house, and that's where I've decided to have Isla live until she outgrows this next pot. By then she'll be ready to go outside for the spring/summer season. She's not anywhere near her sisters, who had the fungus gnats, but one can never be too careful! So Isla is now set and ready to spread her roots. In the wee hours of the morning, last week, I ordered a wee citrus tree. It had been over a month since I last bought one and my shopping fingers were ready to add to our little citrus family. But, because we're in the process of acclimating the 4 we have to indoor life for the next 6 months or so, I didn't want to bring a bigger tree into the house. Also, I had already finalized this year's grow light setup, and a bigger tree wouldn't exactly fit. Enter: Logee's. We bought the coolest Hibiscus plant from them earlier in the summer and have loved it ever since. I keep an eye on their inventory, and even have a nice wishlist on their website. Since I'd decided I was definitely looking for a teeny, tiny citrus tree, Logee's was the first place I looked. They have citrus babies in a 2.5 inch pot, which was perfect for my needs. I had also decided I wanted to try a #Calamondin because it can fruit and flower year round. Sour oranges aren't my favorite, but I found enough recipes for how to use it and felt comfortable with how I could use it. Almost the same way I'd use lemons, plus a little sugar. As I was browsing, a week ago, I stumbled upon a baby Variegated Calamondin tree on Logee's website and there was just 1 in stock. I took it as a sign. I am obsessed with variegation, in general, and I already have Anastasia, who is a Variegated Eureka Pink Lemon Tree. She's so stunning that I went ahead and took the plunge. It was only $12.95, I mean, come on! So, everyone meet Isla. She is absolutely precious and do you see the tiny little Calamondin fruit on her? How sweet of Logee's to not prune that off before sending her my way. Cutie boots harvest of #variegatedcalamondin (or #kalamondin). The tree is only about a year old and really small but already has made quite a bit of fruit. It's majorly sour so I gotta work out what to do with it!! Any ideas? There's not enough for jam unless I mixed it with some bought fruit 🤔
Love this baby variegated calamondin! The immature fruit is so cute with the striped variegated skin. My #variegatedcalamondin is taking on its final colour! There's also a second batch of fruit on the way! The fruit is still stripy which I love but I don't think it will last when its fully ripe.
