Not all great tropical plants produce massive, colorful flowers. Take Curculigo capitulata, “Palm Grass”, for example. This herbaceous tropical plant from Asia is known for its arching, pleated foliage far more than for its blooms. Resembling coconut seedlings, the leaves emerge from underground stems, and never form any sort of trunk. Individually they can reach from 3-5’ depending on the amount of shade they are in, and in very low light can be as tall as 6’ when stretching. The foliage is quite fibrous, and has a host of ethnobotanical uses, including as medicine and for net making. The flowers are a bright yellow, are somewhat inconspicuous, occurring right at the soil line. Since they are covered by waves of foliage, they are often overlooked. Also known as Molineria capitulata, and commonly as “Whale Back leaves”, it does best in warm, humid environments, and is hardy USDA zones 9b and higher. I like to see this plant used in mass under trees, where the slightest breeze causes them to sway. They are also good in containers and planted along walkways. People always say they want color in the landscape. This is the perfect reminder that green is, in fact, a color! Ctenanthe, along with their close relatives Calatheas and Marantas, are commonly called “Prayer Plants” because of their habit of opening and closing its leaves as day transitions to night. 🌱 Available 🌱 🌞Indirect Sunlight They should not be in a position to see the sun directly, although early morning or late evening sun is fine. Filtered sunlight through a sheer curtain is best and most homes are comprised primarily of indirect sunlight. The best spot for them is where they do not see the sun during the majority of the day but still get bright, indirect light. 💡They will thrive in bright light, but also can tolerate medium light. A good medium-light place in your home would be in the middle of a room that has a regular size window. They can be placed anywhere between the middle of the room and the window. Remember that plants will grow based on how much light they receive. 💦They need to be watered when the top half of the soil is dry to the touch. That usually takes about 1 week in an average home environment. Needing some height in a garden bed but don’t have a lot of space? The pencil point juniper is a great option. It only gets at most 2ft wide and 10ft tall at maturity. This plant is very slow growing and very drought tolerant so no need for heavy watering. You will spend more time enjoying this plant than taking care of it. One other great thing is that it is very deer resistant! #coolplants

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Maroon Beauty' is a plant I'm very glad hitched a ride in the other plants I took with me from the old garden. It's not that hard to find, but I'd hate to be without it all the same. The dark markings can cover the entire leaf surface except the silver veins, but I especially like when it's just patches like this.
