Happy Mother Monday! Yesterday was a treat that this mama needed!! I (Rebecca) attended my first of three silent retreats led by the lovely Krista McCain of @hundredgrasses at the exquisite @motherlion_bayview. I didn't know what to expect going in, but space for silence while being with others in community (without having to talk or interact) was the perfect counterbalance to the chaos and noise of every day life. I often struggle to make or find the time for quiet, but setting aside a few hours to just be and allow my senses to take me where they wanted as I explored the house and yard (without the interruption of a 6 year old) was a gift. Thank you to Krista for being a lovely host–from the meditations to the delicious lentil soup and pumpkin chia pudding, you held beautiful and nourishing space for us all. This quote is one we have shared before, but it came up for me today. That baby is starting full day school next week and this summer we lost our sweet dog of 12.5 years. The day she came into our life, our family felt complete. The convergence of her growing and him departing marks a shift that I hadn't prepared for. The rhythm of our life is forever changing and I am struggling to find my footing. I don't want to let go, but it is part of this journey. Our hearts go out to all the mamas who are doing their own letting go right now- whether sending your kiddo(s) off to 5K or college or somewhere in between. The transition is hard. In Let’s Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World, @daniellefriedmanwrites delves into the fairly recent and f*cking rich history of women’s fitness. From the widely held belief that a woman’s uterus would fall out if she exercised too hard, to thinking sweat is unladylike (thanks to @victoriaparis, we now know that hot girls sweat), gals like Bonnie Prudden, Jane Fonda, and Carla Dunlap have given meaning to movement, found success in strength. I can’t say I didn’t buy a vintage leotard and Jane Fonda’s Workout Book, but I can say this book uncovered a colorful history that’s still very much in the making. #MotherMonday on a Tuesday because this gal’s story (albeit brief at this point in time) is a nod to breaking the status quo. I flew through my copy of Danielle Friedman’s Let’s Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World (more on this soon). She takes readers on a tour of the hidden histories (herstories?) of barre, jogging, aerobics, weight training and yoga — all of which are incredibly fascinating and largely triumphant, but mostly white. Extra time, access to safe spaces and disposable income remain prerequisites to exercise, making it a privilege often reserved for middle-and-upper-class white people. And in terms of yoga, we know lots about male gurus but little about the women who put their hearts and souls and, like Reba, bodies on the line. Nicknamed Strong Woman by @idajomusic of @ghoshyoga (conveniently the name of her autobiography by Ida), Reba was an Indian bodybuilder and yogi who lived from 1933 to 2010. In her heyday as a circus star, elephants and cars would tread over her chest. As a former student of Bishnu Charan Ghosh at the Institute of Physical Culture in Kolkata, India, she later retired from stardom to spend her days teaching yoga. Since having Nico, I have found myself really struggling to get the mental and emotional energy to organize all the things that it takes to actually go. Invites would come and go due to this feeling of overwhelm. Timing all of the moving pieces on top of figuring out how to get ready just overwhelmed every opportunity. this week I thought against it, and even though the same anxiety started to show up right before leaving, I allowed myself space to feel it and move through it. Simple steps got me out the door, along with my current sidekick for an intimate celebration with some amazing women. To say my cup was filled is an incredible understatement! A night filled with conversation, belly laughter, incredible food and most of all connection with other women lasted much later than I told myself I would last. No one wanted to leave. I felt a different kind of beautiful that I haven’t felt in awhile. It was anchored in feminine wisdom, strength and softness all at the same time. This is the only photo of the whole experience. Snapped quickly when I parked the car. I was so engaged with the evening, the thought of taking out my phone never crossed my mind. The lesson from it all was how much us women require connection and life, particularly motherhood, was never meant to be done solo. That one evening brought me back into my body, lit me up and made me noticeably more engaged with life back home. Women need other women. If you don’t have them. Actively find them. Curate the women you surround yourself with. Today's #MotherMonday spotlight is reserved for Miss Lyn Marshall, famed British yoga teacher who amassed a following through her Wake Up To Yoga, Keep Up With Yoga and Everyday Yoga programs on some of the UK's largest television networks. May 8th, 1944 to May 4th, 1992 (May mama, grounded girlie) There's not much written about her, but thanks to Pinterest I know Lyn as the pretty yoga gal dressed in one color from head to toe. She's more than that, though. Her list of labels reads: yoga teacher, broadcaster, model, ballerina, and actress. She's best known for guiding the UK through yoga through her number of TV shows.
