An alarming report from the Government Accountability Office found the agency in charge of pipeline oversight is lacking in its data collection practices and failing to protect communities by underestimating the size of "blast zones," among other issues. "Community members living near the #MountainValleyPipeline have long questioned the narrowness of the estimated blast zone and it’s urgent for PHMSA to reevaluate those estimates," said Federal Legislative Specialist Quenton King. Dr. Julie Shepherd-Powell is an assistant professor and Graduate Program Director of Appalachian Studies, recruiting students for the program throughout the region. She is an accomplished traditional Appalachian musician and dancer, winning numerous awards for her flatfoot dancing and performing in places across the globe like South Africa and Romania. Dr. Shepherd-Powell is an anthropologist and teaches courses such as Political Ecology in Appalachia, and Community-Based Research, that intersect with her research interests in community-based activism around coal extraction and energy regimes in Appalachia. Like all of our Appalachian Studies scholars, Dr. Julie Shepherd-Powell follows the footsteps of Dr. Helen Matthews Lewis who is known as the grandmother of Appalachian Studies and designed the first programs for Appalachian studies in academia. Besides presenting at the Appalachian Studies Conference 2024, she attended the panel session "Pipeline Struggles: Lessons for National Organizing from the Appalachian Stop MVP and Stop Ridgeline Movements." The convener was Dr. Gabe Schwartzman of University of Tennessee, and the moderator was Dr. Emily Satterwhite of Virginia Tech. Appalachian Voices, Protect Our Water Heritage Rights (POWHR), Safe, Affordable, Good Energy for Tennessee (SAGE TN) were organizations represented. After attending the panel, Dr. Shepherd-Powell briefly addressed the issues brought about by pipelines in the Appalachians in a brief video already posted on our platform. She spoke about the work done by POWHR- Protect our Water Heritage Rights and her students. This kind of relationship will continue to happen and she hopes that at least some of her students will embrace ecological activism as a form of life. In April of 2022, students enrolled in Dr. Shepherd-Powell’s class at Appalachian State University spent a weekend in Virginia counties where the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) crosses through. Pittsburghers stood in solidarity with people in Appalachia who are facing increased state repression in the fight against the Mountain Valley Pipeline, specifically those taking direct action against the pipeline. The pipeline is partially owned (45.5%) by Equitrans Midstream, a subsidiary of EQT Corporation & has received $86.7m in funding from @pncbank. Both companies are headquartered in Pittsburgh. The protest took place in Downtown PGH outside both headquarters on January 29. It was organized by members with @thirdactpa, but was joined by people active in numerous local groups like @sunrisemvmtpgh, @pghlaborchoir, @alleghenygreens1, @fossilfreepitt, & more. The MVP is currently being built across Peters Mtn (Jefferson National Forest), a place that has been the site of fierce resistance to the pipeline and is a place many people in the community care deeply about. @appalachiansagainstpipelines and the direct action campaign against the MVP started on that same mountain in 2018. North Carolina/Virginia Construction Update🚧: According to a filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Dec. 29, 2023, Equitrans Midstream plans to alter the design of the Mountain Valley Pipeline Southgate Project. The project would increase natural gas transport capacity in North Carolina and Virginia. This was part of the deal that Senator Manchin cut with the Biden administration to push through the Inflation Reduction Act. But recently with the audacity of Democratic Senator of WV Joe Manchin. who takes 3X as much $$$ from the fossil fuel industry. Manchin was able to push through the building of this pipeline by sneaking through the debt ceiling deal. Biden signed the bill. Biden is no climate justice president and it's laughable to think so. Now activists from Appalachians Against Pipelines have been going to the construction sites for the pipeline to take peaceful direct action to stop one day at a time the building of MVP. They are risking their safety, health, and freedom to stop this pipeline. From what I saw in the cards the activists will be able to delay the building of this pipeline. 1st card: 3 of Wands, waiting, delay. 2nd card: 9 of Pentacles, stable money 3rd card: 8 of Swords in reverse, not feeling trapped 4th card: Knight of Pentacles in reverse, Bottom of deck: 7 of Cups, options, choices So there's a strong energy of delay of slowing down to almost no movement that will play out over time, along with financial stability and options. In Appalachia, communities are rising up against the Mountain Valley Pipeline. As the government has mandated the construction of a major pipeline set to run through West Virginia and Virginia, community members face a lack of access to clean drinking water, degradation to their landscape, and mental and physical health risks. “People can’t look out their windows without being reminded of the destruction being forced on them by corporations and politicians that don’t care if they live or die,” says climate activist Rachel Elliot. The Mountain Valley Pipeline has been considered by many to be an essential infrastructure project due to its potential to improve U.S. energy security, affordability, and reliability. However, many have critiqued the pipeline for its failed permit applications, high cost, potential carbon emissions, and environmental record. On July 27, 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court granted emergency action sought by Mountain Valley Pipeline’s developers, lifting holds by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals that had been imposed in early July while it reviewed litigation concerning the project’s authorization. The 4th Circuit’s decision to issue the stays directly contradicted language in a congressional debt ceiling bill, the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA), completed in May of this year. The FRA declared both pending cases against the pipeline moot and that all new appeals should be sent to the D.C. Circuit rather than the 4th Circuit, the latter having blocked numerous permits in repeated rulings against the pipeline. According to environmental groups against the project, Congress is not allowed to direct the appeals courts to reach particular conclusions in pending litigation, and thus the FRA violated separation of powers. Following the 4th Circuit’s stay orders on July 10 and 11, 2023, the developers made an emergency pitch to the Supreme Court, arguing that Section 324 of the FRA stripped jurisdiction from the 4th Circuit and rendered pending litigation against the project moot. In the Supreme Court’s July 27 order, pipeline developers received some of what they desired. The high court threw out the 4th Circuit’s stays, meaning construction on the project may resume, but the court did not speak to the pending cases in the 4th Circuit, thereby leaving the circuit to decide whether to move forward with the lawsuits in the absence of the high court explicitly repealing its jurisdiction. #scotus #supremecourt #mountainvalleypipeline #breakingnews #climatecrisis #climate #climateemergency #climateawareness #mountainvalleypipelinenews
