A global study led by Dr. Tony Walker and a team of international researchers has identified 56 companies as the primary contributors to half of the world's plastic pollution, with Coca-Cola being the largest offender, accounting for 11% of branded plastic waste worldwide. The study, which was recently released, highlights a direct relationship between a company's production of plastic and the amount of branded plastic waste found in the environment. This revelation has sparked discussions on potential measures, such as taxation, to combat plastic pollution, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address this global issue. The study conducted by researchers from Dalhousie University and a dozen different universities in the United States, Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Estonia, Chile, Sweden, and the UK found that 56 global companies are responsible for more than half of all branded plastic pollution. Soft drink manufacturers Coca-Cola and Pepsi account for a sixth of the world’s branded plastic waste. Additionally, Nestle, Danone, and Altria are among the top contributors to plastic pollution. Notably, Coca-Cola is identified as the largest contributor, accounting for 11% of the identified plastic waste. The study also highlights that the largest chemical company in the world, Dow, and China’s oil and gas enterprise, Sinopec, are significant contributors to plastic waste. ExxonMobil is the largest single-use plastic waste polluter globally, contributing 5.9 million tonnes. To the delight of natural gas companies, some power utilities are interested in increasing the output of their legacy natural gas, coal and nuclear plants, even seeking to build new gas plants to accommodate the staggering power that new data centers will need to handle increased demand from new AI technology. Boosters of fossil fuels contend that building new solar and wind capacity would take too long, conveniently forgetting that energy storage costs are falling rapidly as new battery technologies come on line and that other clean options exist for providing the needed power. Alaska is home to 229 federally recognized tribes, and their cultures and livelihoods are critically under threat from the linked threats of climate change, plastics, fossil fuels, and petrochemicals. Plastics are made from fossil fuels and chemicals, and the oil and gas industries are betting on plastics to grow their markets. Left unchecked, the petrochemical industry is projected to account for 50% of oil consumption by 2050. More plastics means more oil and gas and more health disparities for Indigenous Peoples. This source-and-sink cycle results in increased health problems and food insecurity for Indigenous Peoples, as traditional food sources become scarce or contaminated. Earlier this year, microplastics were detected for the first time in the tissues of the Pacific walrus of the Bering and Chukchi Seas, an animal critical to the traditional diet of Indigenous Peoples of this region.
