This past Sunday for Mother's Day, I decided that I wanted to take a picnic up to Eagle Bluff and eat at the top because the weather was so nice. This WOULD have been a really good plan if we weren't instantly black fly food at the top - I'm not even joking, it was like sitting in a cloud of flies as soon as we stopped walking. I would immediately tap out on Naked and Afraid because of flies/mosquitos, I can't handle them. So we hiked down, drove to Fielders Choice, got ourselves icecream and sat in the sun at a picnic table. As is often the case, I wasn’t sure about where I was going to end up for sunrise this morning. I dropped by Footbridge Beach but wasn’t excited about it, then continued on down Rt 1 to Ogunquit and sat in the parking lot at Perkins Cove but I was just there on Sunday so I wasn’t stoked for that either. Looking out at the horizon I thought about catching the sun behind Nubble from Long Sands Beach. As an added bonus I could get a nice sandy beach video to share - sold! So I motored down Shore Road to York. Arriving at Long Sands I saw the tide was pretty high with the waves slapping at the stairs, so that sandy beach video will have to wait another day at least. I checked my app for where to set up so that I could get the sun behind the lighthouse, threw on the 500mm lens and clicked away as the sky behind the lighthouse was already beautiful shades of red and pink. Soon the clouds higher in the sky turned from gray to pink and purple and red. I took that opportunity to take the video I shared a little bit ago and realized I needed to swap my long lens out for a wide angle. I raced up the steps to the AdventureMobile, grabbed my lens bag, hustled back down the steps and made the switch while annoying flies kept flitting about in my ears and hair. The color on the water was amazing and I did a little water motion with the waves too. In the end I never did see the sun behind the lighthouse - snuffed by clouds, and on the drive to Portland it began to rain . Just an unbelievable display last night! I’m sure you’ve seen a bunch of northern light photos already, so here is mine. I drove to a lot of different places and shot around 160 photos but the place that stuck out to me was one of the last locations I stopped at - the one-room schoolhouse in Harrison. A curtain of light swooshed above it while to the left light was pulsing. An incredible night, and I’ve been awake for about 27 hours now so I def need to get a little sleep before a fun activity we have planned later this morning. .
