What the heck is jicama (pronounced HIH-kuh-muh)? Jicama is a beige round vegetable that looks more like a potato or other root vegetable; however it is in fact a member of the Fabaceae family which includes beans and peas, which explains the “legumey” flavour. Derek and I discovered jicama on a recent trip to Mexico (where it is native). I looked for it at the Food Terminal and we are now offering it at Fraberts! Unlike the root veggie it resembles (and in fact it is a root), it is not starchy, but has a snap and juiciness to it and is delicious eaten raw. Its texture is similar to an apple. The most traditional way to eat it is by peeling and slicing it with lemon or lime juice and chili powder. Its flesh is porous, so it picks up flavours well. You can marinate it and include in a salad, dip it in hummus, or use it in instead of a corn tortilla for a tasty tostada. I like it sprinkled with Tajin (yes we have that in stock also!) Jicama has many health benefits including aiding in digestion, vitamin C, vitamin B6, antioxidants, dietary fibre, prebiotics for gut health, and safe for blood sugar (low glycemic load). 💥Flashback on the First💥 March was jam-packed with birthday celebrations, extra work shifts, and Easter, yet we still managed to enjoy game days with friends and attend our first convention, Breakout Con. Despite only spending one day there, we had a blast! We immersed ourselves in the board game community, tried new games, spoke to publishers, and even met @jennarosebeasley of The Board Game Garden and John of @chitsandcardboard. At the convention’s bring and buy, we couldn’t resist breaking our one game a month rule and ended up lugging piles of games home across the city, in the rain, on the subway, and on the train back home. Despite the adventure, we played 28 different games, including 10 new ones, totaling 36 sessions. Some noteworthy games we played included: 🏰The Castles of Burgundy with four players reminded us why we need to keep an eye out for the second crowdfunding campaign. 🚂Colt Express returned to the table and was a blast with friends who hadn’t played before. It’s a straightforward game, perfect for filling gaps on game days. 🫛Genotype: A Mendelian Genetics Game was one of our purchases at the bring and buy. The dice mechanics are fantastic, and we anticipate the game feeling intense with more players. 🔎Darwin’s Journey was challenging! Combos in later turns were incredible and our two-player game ended with a nail-bitingly close score! 🗡️The Resistance: Avalon with eight players highlighted our friends’ enthusiasm for social deduction games. 🦜Wingspan with seven players was fantastic! Surprisingly, it didn’t take as long as expected, and the scoring was incredibly close. It’s always enjoyable watching our friends strategize. 🐉 Wyrmspan caught our eye on the shelf at Breakout Con’s library, and we instantly fell in love with it. @boardgamebliss had copies available, so naturally, we brought one home. The unique mechanics justify adding it to our collection alongside Wingspan, and the adorable dragons sealed the deal! March was incredible, and we’re thrilled to plan for more conventions, possibly even some larger ones, in 2025. Looking forward to April (Creene’s birthday month). Happy gaming! 🐲&🐙
