Did you know that the Trinity River runs from north Texas (close to the Oklahoma border) all the way down into the Gulf of Mexico? Did you also know that Lake Lavon, Lewisville Lake, Grapevine Lake, and many other lakes are all fed by the Trinity River? That makes for many different ways you can experience the Trinity River. @TrinityRiverAudubonCenter in Dallas is a great place to see the river as well as explore the Great Trinity Forest. With the heavy rains we've had for the last couple of months, everything is very lush right now. We saw an abundance of catepillars on plants, which means the place should be loaded with butterflies soon. πŸ›πŸ¦‹πŸ₯³ πŸ—“ πŸ“Έ Images captured May 4, 2024 . . . . . . . . #TrinityRiverAudubonCenter #TrinityForest #TrinityRiver #DallasTexas #DallasHiking #DallasNature #DallasOutside #DallasParks #DallasTrails #HikingTexas #igTexas #NorthTexasNature #TexasNature #TexasOutdoors #BetterOutside #GetOutdoors #NatureLovers #52HikeChallenge2024

You know how much we love blackland prairies here, and you know how rare it is to find untouched parcels of blackland prairie that have never been developed. Kachina Prairie is one of those rare gems. This 30-acre nature preserve is located in Ennis, and it is protected by @TexasLandConservancy. It is also one of the spots you can check out along the @EnnisBluebonnet Trails. What is it about bluebonnets that captivate us? We are inundated with blue in the sky, and we are used to seeing blue reflected on water. Yet, we never get tired of the color blue. πŸ’™ Interestingly, blue is the rarest color found in the plant kingdom. Only 7.5% of flowering plants produce blue flowers. Maybe we love bluebonnets so much because subconsciously we realize that seeing large swaths of blue flowers is sort of an anomaly...Or maybe we love them simply because they are pretty. πŸš™ Whatever the reason may be, don't forget that you can see fields of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, and other wildflowers throughout 40 mapped out miles that make up the @EnnisBluebonnet Trails, located in Ennis about 35 minutes south of Dallas. ❓️Why do YOU like bluebonnets? πŸ—“ πŸ“Έ Images captured April 14, 2024 . . . . . . . . #Ennis #VisitEnnis #EllisCounty #BluebonnetTrail #Bluebonnets #TexasBluebonnets #Wildflowers #TexasWildflowers #TexasNativePlants #NativeTexasPlants #SpringInTexas #NorthTexasNature #TexasNature #IGTexas #InstagramTexas #GetOutside #GetOutdoors #TexasOutdoors #TripsFromDallas #TexasRoadTrip

Frankford Prairie has a rare remnant of original Blackland Prairie, trees estimated to be over 100 years old, and Indian Springs. We had a great tour of Frankford Prairie this past weekend. It is pretty special to have such a historic piece of land in Dallas, which has long succumbed to overdevelopment. Tragically, less than 1% of the native ecosystem within the Blackland Prairie (the ecoregion most of us here in North Texas live) remains. Fortunately, @FrankfordPreservation Foundation preserves a 5-acre remnant of original Blackland Prairie located in far north Dallas. 🌸 Currently, wild blue hyacinth are dotted throughout the prairie. Pink evening primrose and indian blanket are also in bloom. Like any prairie, different wildflower species cycle in and out as the season progresses. Happy new year! We started 2024 with a #firstdayhike held by the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest with @billholston guiding us. Spring Creek Forest Preserve is in Garland, just 14 miles from downtown Dallas. It covers approximately 250 acres of land, and much of it is old growth virgin forest. Native trees that are estimated to be 500 years old can be found inside the forest. Given their age, some of these trees tower over 100 feet tall and have trunks that are 4 feet wide. There are even fossils that are estimated to be 87 million years old 😲. 🌎 Few places in the United States have virgin old growth forests that have never been cleared, farmed, or developed by humans in some way. With North Texas's farming history and the rapid pace that DFW has developed over the last couple of decades, it is amazing that any virgin forest still exists. Isn't it cool that we have this local natural gem that has withstood the test of time? Check back in spring, and the open prairies will be covered with colorful wildflowers. ❓️Where did you do your new years day hike? ❓️What would you do if you could experience 500 new years? πŸ“Έ πŸ—“ Images captured January 1, 2024 __________________________________________ #52hikechallenge #52hikechallenge2024 #dallashikers #dallashiking #dallaslandscape #dallasnature #dallasoutside #dallastrails #dallaswanderer #dfwhikers #dfwhiking #dfwnature #dfwnaturephotography #dfwtrails #exploredallas #exploredfw #hikedallasΒ  #hikingdfw #newtodallasguide #northtexasnature #outdoordallas #texasnature #thingstodoindallas #visitgarland #visitgarlandtx #virginforest #oldgrowthforest

I hope 2023 has been a great year for you! In 2024, let's all go chasing waterfalls. Don't worry, this can be done while also sticking to the rivers and the lakes that we're used to. πŸ’§ Airfield Falls is a natural waterfall in DFW that you can add to your "to chase" list. It is part of the Farmer's Branch-West Fork Trinity River watershed, and it is just several yards from an adjacent Fort Worth neighborhood. Airfield Falls Trail, a paved path, begins at a parking lot and will quickly lead you to the falls. Long meaty hikes are wonderful, but it's also nice to be able to see good scenery like this within just a few minutes of a walk or hike. Continuing down the 1.9-mile trail provides serene views of the Trinity River. ⚠️ (Disclamer: Nature Seekers of North Texas does not condone the chasing of actual falling H2O molecules that have grouped together to make liquid [e.g., waterfalls, rain, tears]. It is advised that you simply find waterfalls and safely admire them rather than chase them. If a waterfall has a drop of 3 feet or less and you are an adult human, then maaaaybe you can chase it, but even that may be questionable.) πŸ“Έ πŸ—“ Images captured December 29, 2023 ____________________________________________ #airfieldfallsconservationpark #airfieldfalls #waterfalls #fortworth #fortworthoutdoors #dallasoutside #dfwnature #dfwnaturephotography #exploredfw #northtexasnature #outdoordallas #riverdistrictfw #thingstodoinfortworthΒ  #trinityriver #trinitytrails #visitforthworth

Merry Christmas, happy Festivus, and happyΒ holidays! Celebrate the season with our own native North Texas Christmas tree - the eastern red cedar! πŸŽ„...Okay, so technically eastern red cedars aren't the traditional pine, fir, or spruce trees that are decorated this time of year, but they have needles, and in their natural state they are conical-shaped like a Christmas tree 🀫. They are also evergreen junipers, which serves us well as we enter winter. By now, almost all deciduous trees have shed their leaves and are bare, but eastern red cedars remain green throughout the year, giving us some much desired color during the winter months. πŸšΆπŸΎβ€β™€οΈEastern red cedars can be found in many parks and landscapes across North Texas, including Harry Myers Park. This approximately 70-acre park serves the Rockwall community, has paved walking paths that meander throughout the park, and is anchored by Pickens Lake, which almost always is populated with ducks. If you veer off the concrete paths onto the land, you will be rewarded with close-up views of trees, various other plants, flowing creeks, and clear ponds. ❓️What do you think? Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is one of those cool places that are great to visit each season. Each season gifts us with new stories -- stories that are dare I say...even better than a Netflix show. "😲By golly, but how can that be?!πŸ€”" you may be asking yourself. Well, as noted in the last couple of posts, with winter approaching, thousands of migrating birds are currently on view, and even the desiccated prairie plants are charming in their unique ways. The pictures above are from this past summer. Each year in July, the summer season brings beautiful blankets of butter yellow American lotuses blooming in the water along Meadow Pond Trail. Furthermore, an assortment of wildflowers and wildlife can be viewed throughout most of the year. So be sure to put Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on your watchlist. So what exactly is a national wildlife refuge? I'm glad you asked... In 1903, the U.S. federal government began protecting and conserving designated spaces of public land as permanent habitats for wildlife, fish, and plants. These expansive, mostly undeveloped lands (and water) provide reliable spaces for animals to roam free, be protected from humans, get some food, nest, hang out with family and friends, be their best selves and live their best life. Today, there are 570 national wildlife refuges across the country. Texas is home to 20, including Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge here in North Texas. What an amazing experience to see and hear thousands of snow geese flying to and fro and congregating in fields at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Did you know North Texas is a hotspot for birds? We are located in the Central Flyway, a path that migratory birds take to fly south in the fall for warmer climates and north in the spring for cooler climates. This means spring and fall are the best periods in the year to see massive flocks of different bird species. Right now, about 3,500 snow geese are at the refuge, and thousands more are expected to arrive. Plenty of other bird and mammal species are also present. There are three ways you can bird watch and learn about the different wildlife and habitats in the refuge. 1. πŸš— Take a self-guided auto tour along Wildlife Rd. at your own pace from the comfort of your own vehicle. 2. πŸ›Ί Sign up for a free tram ride either online or at the visitor's center. 3. πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ¦―Take a hike! There are about 12 miles of trails to explore. πŸ—“ Images captured December 2, 2023 ________________________________________ #hagermannationalwildliferefuge #graysoncounty #laketexoma #birdmigration #snowgeese #dallashikers #dallasoutside #dallaswanderer #dfwhikers #dfwnaturephotography #hiketexas #hikingdfw #hikingtexas #nationalwildliferefuge #naturelovers #naturephotography #northtexasnature #texashiking #texashikingtrails #texasnature #tripsfromdallas #usinterior #visittexas #wildlifephotography

Did you know you can see bison roaming at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge? Today, being National Bison Day, is a good day to check them out. Do you like to drink fresh clean water? Do you like scenic expansive landscapes? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then John Bunker Sands (JBS) Wetland is for you. This amazing feat of environmental engineering is not just beautiful to look at - it is also functional. The wetland helps to cleanse the water that eventually comes through most of North Texas's faucets. When I first visited @jbswetlandcenter September 24, 2022 and took in the expanse of green foliage growing out of the clear water, all against a blue sky, I exclaimed "Why have I never been here before?" and made a mental note to visit more often. Today, I am dreaming about my next peaceful stroll through the wetland. πŸ—“ πŸ“Έ Images captured September 24, 2022 _____________________________________________ #johnbunkersandswetlandcenter #jbswetlandcenter #combinetx #seagoville #kaufmancounty #dallascounty #dfw #dallasnature #exploredfw #outdoordallas #thingstododallas #dfwtrails #dallaslife #naturelovers #naturephotography #northtexasnature #texasnature #newtodallasguide #visitdallas

Squabble Creek Trail is simply one of the best hiking spots in DFW. Immediately upon entering the trail, the air is fresher, and you are greeted by fragrant scents from the surrounding vegetation. With an assortment of native tree species such as cedar elm, osage orange, hackberry, pecan, walnut, eastern red cedar, and mighty oaks, it is a forest lover's delight. As you meander the trail, it feels like you are entering different rooms of the woods. Squirrels gather nuts and frolic through tall mature trees and swing through vines. Choirs of birds can be heard singing, squawking, and chirping in the canopies. Pleasant sounds are also provided by Squabble Creek, whose water flows through various segments of rocks alongside much of the trail. The abundant life observable in the forest makes for a relaxing hike, and walking on a dirt path with craggy tree roots, fallen leaves, and paths that wind side-to-side and up-and- down is just plain fun. More to come... πŸ—“ πŸ“Έ Images captured October 21, 2023 __________________________________________ #squabblecreek #squabblecreektrail #rockwalltx #rockwalltexas #belocalrockwall #rockwallcounty #rockwallparksandrec #exploredfw #hikingdfw #dfwhikers #dfwhiking #dfwnature #dfwtrails #northtexasnature #outdoordallas #dorba #forest #beaglesofdallas

If coming across a sunflower undoubtedly brings a smile to people's faces, then how much more can strolling through fields, fields, and more fields of sunflowers do? It's enough to brighten anyone's day even when the moon is eclipsing the sun. That was the case yesterday at Parkhill Prairie. Walking Parkhill Prairie yesterday in early autumn was a chance to see an open landscape filled with beautiful wilflowers such as maximillian sunflowers, snow on the prairie, and asters. It was also an opportunity to relax while watching and listening to bluestem and other native grasses swish from side to side with the cool breeze. Parkhill Prairie is a nature preserve that spans 436 acres and houses a remnant of native blackland prairie. Less than 1% of the blackland prairie ecosystem remains on earth. Parkland Prairie is what DFW and much of North Texas naturally still looked like generations ago before development. Be sure to experience this rare, almost extinct gem. Thank you to @wilddfw, @npat.blacklandprairie, and @blacklandprairietxmn for hosting the walk. πŸ—“ πŸ“Έ Images captured October 14, 2023 ___________________________________________ #parkhillprairie #blueridgetx #collincountytx #dfw #blacklandprairie #dallaswanderer #exploredfw #explorenature #dfwhikers #dfwtrails #dfwnature #hikingdfw #dfwhiking #natureconservancy #naturelovers #naturephotography #northtexasnature #outdoordallas #texasnature #wilddfw #texasmasternaturalist #nativeprairiesassociationoftexas

South Lakes Park also called Eureka 2 is the best park for nature walks, photography, and family time in the city of Denton. Not an opinion. I posted in my stories about the complete destruction of the beautiful large hedge at the end of our fields when our neighbors crossed our property line and ripped it all out. I was asked the question: does this effect your crops? The answer: absolutely. The hedge is on the west facing end of our fields so we lost 1) vast amounts of needed shade and 2) a huge wind break. We rarely struggle with leaf hopper pests because of our numerous birds for which this hedge 3) was a critical part of their habitat. Our fields back up to a busy street with lots of light and the massive hedge blocked both light and noise. Now we have much more 4) light drift which really effects certain night length sensitive plants and some light-intensity sensitive plants. The lot behind us is on an upward slope and without all this vegetation acting as both a barrier and a massive source of water intake we are much more vulnerable to 5) flooding as rain waterruns down the slope into our fields. 6) I can’t harvest in my jammies anymore 😁 But humor aside, the lose of this hedge is a heavy blow 😒 The thing is, even though they were careless with the property boundary, these people are not mean and unkind. They literally have no idea the damage they’ve done. Like so many people, they move through the world with very little awareness of how nature is working and thriving all around them. There is so much education needed in our world, about how food and flowers come to be; about how birds and bees thrive and help us survive; about how plants grow and prevent floods or how artificial light can change whole ecosystems. So while this is heartbreaking for us, I know my flowers can be a vehicle of that education. Hopefully it can start right here: with the neighbors. And if that saves a hedge somewhere, sometime in the future, which saves a bird and then saves a bee which saves a plant species, etc., it will have been worth it.
