National Volunteer Week begins today and we LOVE this year's theme! "National Volunteer Week 2024 will recognise the diverse passions and talents everyone brings to the act of volunteering. It’s an invitation to explore the myriad of opportunities available, emphasising that there’s a place for everyone in the world of volunteering. Whether you’re drawn to environmental causes, community outreach, education, or beyond, there’s a place where your unique skills and interests can flourish." Too often, we assume that to take part in environmental volunteering, we have to be fit, strong and able-bodied, able to stick it out all day 'in the field'. Largely, because that is what we see advertised and celebrated! In reality, nature needs everyone, contributing when they can, where they can and how they can. We all have different strengths to offer, and as an industry we need to celebrate the role that citizen scientists, administrators, social media creators, fundraisers, artists, writers, educators and others play in caring for and championing our environment. This week, we're going to be asking you some questions to help us find ways to create more accessible and inclusive opportunities to volunteer in nature, for more people. Last Saturday, Elyssa and I volunteered with the Wildlife Stewards of Northeastern North Carolina to plant six Serviceberry trees in front of the Camden County Library. *Photos are not mine* 🌳 The trees themselves will grow to about 15 to 25 ft and provide sustenance to both pollinators and wildlife throughout spring, summer, and even fall! It flowers early in the spring, and later, will provide purple berries for wildlife to eat in the summer. 🌎 Before volunteering, I hadn’t heard about this tree, but thanks to Jane Plough, one of our chapter leaders, I learned that it is native to Eastern North America and typically grows in the coastal and Piedmont regions of my home state in North Carolina. I’m grateful to have been a part of planting the trees that day, and I’m looking forward to more plantings in the future. If you’re in a position to join or even plant native tree species in your own backyard, it can go a long way to benefit wildlife. It's definitely starting to feel autumnal, and come October the nature team at Stanwick Lakes surveys for the humble harvest mouse! We are inviting volunteers to help us survey the nature reserve for signs of harvest mice during half term, on Friday 27th October. While it’s improbable you will spot one of these shy, elusive creatures themselves (the harvest mouse is tiny - weighing about the same as a 2p piece - but with incredible hearing... they will scarper from rustling in the grass up to 7 metres away!) our focus will be to identify indicators of, and locate, their abandoned nests. This session is suitable for families with children aged 7 and older. During the expedition, we will delve into the grass and undergrowth, whatever the weather! So make sure to dress appropriately for an exciting outdoor adventure! This session is FREE but booking is essential, as there are limited spaces available. Here I am on a cold, muddy day in December 2020 helping Treebourne to plants 1000s of trees at a local recreation ground. 2.5 years on here I am again this time standing amongst those same trees. So thrilled to see how they've grown in such a short time and the tree mortality rate appears to be tiny. What an amazing transformation. In light of it being Volunteer Appreciation Week, we want everyone to meet Chantelle, one of our superstar volunteers in the Surrey area! 🥰 She’s been spreading nature love as a NatureKids volunteer since 2019 and is passionate about getting kids outside and loves fostering their sense of curiosity in nature. 🌲❤️ She joined our NatureKids to spend time outside with local families in her community, learn from and connect with other leaders, and to foster curiosity in nature in all those who come to her Explorer Day events. A busy day of scrub removal and fence repairs on top of Portsdown Hill by the fantastic Portsdown Hill volunteers. Scrub is generally vegetation dominated by bushes such as blackthorn, hawthorn and dogwood. It's an extremely valuable habitat for many mammals, birds and insects. Our regular Community Action for Nature volunteers help us make local places better for wildlife. They do things like planting trees and sowing seeds. There’s an emphasis on training and skills development, and suits young people looking for a career outdoors. Our team of volunteer walk leaders take out our wellbeing walking groups every day of the week all year round, come rain or shine. Fancy volunteering to help us deliver our fun and engaging primary school workshops? Butterfly Conservation aims to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. If you are a skilled communicator we would love your help to inspire the next generation and connect them to nature. We are looking for a small number of Engagement Volunteers to support our work delivering fun and engaging workshops to primary schools in London. Guided by our Engagement Officer, you will introduce young people to the fascinating world of butterflies and moths and show them how they can help them in their local green spaces. Workshops are delivered in March-April and June-July within school hours (Monday-Friday) and you would be required for between 2-4 hours per session. Our schools are accessible by public transport and travel expenses will be reimbursed. We ask for a minimum commitment of three workshops and will provide you with dates and locations on application. Our volunteers have been busy across a number of nature reserves carrying out bracken management 🌿 Bracken is a vigorous plant that spreads quickly, and if left unchecked is at risk of taking over grasslands and meadows, shading out other plants. It does, however, provide shelter for many animals including small mammals and reptiles 🐭🐍 For this reason we don't remove it entirely, but instead reduce its spread across meadows and grasslands to allow other wild flowers and herbs to thrive 🌼🌱 whilst leaving some patches as valuable shelter for small creatures. That's what we call #rewilding teamwork! 🙌👇 ⠀ ⠀ Last week a few dozen volunteers removed more than 3,000 meters of barbed wire in the Central Apennines rewilding landscape, helping the @RewildingApennines team and their partner @Salviamolorso restore habitat connectivity in the area. 💪 ⠀ ⠀ The old barbed wire, installed here by the State Forestry Corps many years ago to protect seedlings, is not needed anymore, but it can be a dangerous obstacle for wildlife.
