Balai Besar Survei dan Pemetaan Geologi Kelautan (BBSPGL) di bawah Badan Geologi Kementerian Energi & Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) telah melakukan pemetaan terhadap lokasi-lokasi di Indonesia yang berpotensi menghasilkan energi laut yang dapat dikonversi menjadi energi listrik. Hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa ada 17 titik di perairan Indonesia yang memiliki potensi energi laut sebesar 60 GW (gigawatt). Ke-17 lokasi perairan yang menyimpan potensi energi laut dan tersebar di seluruh Indonesia adalah Selat Riau, Selat Sunda, Selat Toyapakeh Nusa Penida, Selat Lombok, Selat Alas, Selat Molo, Selat Larantuka, Selat Boleng, Selat Pantar, Selat Mansuar, Selat Lirung Talaud, Selat Sugi Riau, Selat Lampa Natuna, Selat Lembeh, Selat Sinaboi Tenggara Medan, Selat Patinti Halmahera Selatan, dan Selat Alor. Hasil pemetaan tersebut juga sudah diluncurkan oleh Badan Geologi pada 2022 lalu ke dalam Peta Potensi Energi Laut Indonesia. Tim BBSPGL telah melewati fase pertama untuk mencari data dukung pemetaan tersebut dengan melakukan pre-feasibility study (FS), salah satunya adalah seleksi lokasi (site location) yang dapat digunakan untuk menentukan lokasi terbaik dalam pemanfaatan Energi Laut yaitu energi arus, gelombang, dan ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). Pusaran laut ini adalah rangkaian arus yang terputus dari arus utama, atau arus kecil yang berputar. Salah satu pusaran laut terbesar yang pernah ditemukan memiliki diameter 93 mil atau hampir 150 km. Bahkan, pusaran laut dengan ukuran yang cukup besar dapat terlihat dari luar angkasa, loh! Pusaran ini diakibatkan oleh kelebihan energi serta dapat terjadi di setiap samudera walaupun lebih memungkinkan terjadi di Samudera Antartika. Point Nemo adalah sebuah lokasi kecil di tengah samudra, yang paling jauh untuk ditempuh dari daratan yaitu sekitar 1.670 mil atau lebih dari 2.600 kilometer. Laut merupakan sumber oksigen terbesar di dunia. Sebesar 70 hingga 80 persen oksigen dihasilkan oleh fitoplankton yang berada di seluruh perairan bumi.
