As a church keyboardist, I always learn and listen to the assigned song on YouTube and write the music sheet. Sometimes, I have to renew my old music sheet and listen to more than 1 song version to enrich my music skill. There is a price to pay for everything, hours of perspiration before the laptop, piano and keyboard. It doesn't have to be in the form of money. It can be in the form of time invested on self rehearsal and band rehearsal. However, the hard work is paid off when we get the crowns in the end, when he says, "Well done, my daughter." Hanon ⭐ A lot of you had asked about my warmup, and what I do before working on repertoire. Here's a small snippet of what that looks like. The above comes from "The Virtuoso Pianist" - a book for musical exercises composed by Charles-Louis Hanon in the late 19th century. These exercises, published in 1873, are intended to develop finger dexterity, agility, and control through a series of targeted exercises. When practiced correctly, these short works help develop strong fingers and supple wrists. I usually practice these with metronome and recommend the same to my students. These exercises are a staple in many pianists' practice routines, and can be helpful for all musicians looking to improve their technique. Why does music theory matter? ⭐ Many music students may wonder why studying seemingly outdated things like 18th-century dance-writing or Baroque chorale-writing is necessary in modern times. Why should we care to replicate ancient writing styles or learn obscure Italian terms? In many ways, music theory is inseparable from music itself. In essence, it teaches us to understand what's on the page. The page offers a lot more information beyond just the notes...and understanding what it says aids the learning process. Understanding theory helps you interpret the music that you play better as well. By understanding the various markings and terminology, you can take directions from the composer on matters of execution and interpretation! Being able to place your knowledge of musical details within historical contexts related to your score can also help you learn to understand your music better, furthering progress within practice sessions and informing your musical choices. Beyond that, music theory is a subject that covers a broad range of musical concepts, from basics, like key signature structures and key relationships to terms, markings, and compositional techniques. Learning all of this together can help students improve their comprehension of the score. Tomorrow, several of my senior students will be writing their RCM 9 harmony exams (good luck to all!) This level helped them learn & understand Bach's writing practices both in his chorales and his inventions, and encouraged them to do some composing and harmonization on their own. Theory can serve as a phenomenal developmental tool, and one that I would recommend for all musicians to invest in acquiring for their musical benefit. Do/did you study theory or do you teach it? Congratulations to my student Patrick Zhao ⭐ for placing 2nd and 3rd in the Kiwanis Music Festival competition! 🏆 Patrick has shown tremendous improvement in the past few months, working with focus and discipline to polish new and freshly memorized repertoire in preparation for this competition. He has also worked hard to conquer his fear of recordings and public performances, performing for both VKMF (recorded) and RCM grade 5 exams (done live on Zoom) within the same week. It's amazing to note that Patrick prepared for both the competition and his exam using almost exclusively online lessons due to limitations concerning covid! Patrick is 12 years old & now in RCM Gr. 6. He has been learning piano with me for 3 years with no previous musical knowledge. Student achievements should always be celebrated, but I believe it's even more important to receive acknowledgement for hard work done in the midst of a pandemic! Bravo to Patrick! What is expression? ⭐ We all *know* what genuine expression really is by how clearly and quickly we identify it when we see it. But how do we describe it? 🎭 Expression is present in all artforms.. whether it's acting.. dance ... music...or the art of conversation.. expression is all around us. We can also easily tell genuine expression from what's fake or (even remotely contrived) to an extent that's hard to verbally state but is immediately palpable. Musical expression is not grimacing or making exaggerated faces or bobbing up and down to the beat. Despite the fact that I too make funny faces when I play, I think that making them on purpose (or in a controlled and practiced way) feels oddly disingenuine and superficial in a way that I can't stand behind. Now..having that come about as a byproduct of really "getting the feels".. that I can vibe with. 🤍 There is a big difference between being expressive and being extra, and that's a fine line that few can put into words. Here's ⭐3 things⭐ that I think of when I think of expression: 1️⃣ Identifying an emotion or mental state that represents what you're playing and actively embodying it 2️⃣ Contextualizing art by processing the meaning behind the historical aspects of how and why a work was written 3️⃣ Relating to how others are feeling from a place of genuine interest and concern rather than mimicry How would you describe genuine expression? A return to Mozart! ⭐ Many of you saw me mention in my stories today that I've been working on memory in this sonata in prep for an upcoming concert stream in May. Trolls. ⭐ The ones who bring hate, insults, and petty criticism. How long have they been at it? Beethoven's Op. 111 was deemed a deaf man's "violent effort to produce something in the shape of a novelty". Brahm's music was dubbed "an incomprehensible terror." Puccini's "La Boheme" was put down as a work that "will leave no great trace upon the history of lyrics theatre." Greig's "Peer Gynt" was said to "reek of cow-pies." Rachmaninoff's 1st symphony was said to be "fit for a music conservatory in hell" and compared to the 10 plagues of Egypt. Tchaikovsky's music was said to "stink to the ear". Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" caused riots on the streets of Paris because it was "a laborious and puerile barbarity" that wasn't considered music. Wanger himself was was described as a "disease" who "has made music sick". Schoenberg's works were labeled as "degenerate" by the Nazis, who forbade them from being published. One could almost ask..if you're not getting any hate, are you even doing it right? 🤷‍♀️🤣 I got some troll commenters show up to my page for the first time this weekend, and they're had some pretty rude remarks in response to some of my content. This is the first online hate I've experienced on my page thus far (yay for milestones!) 👍🤣 Some people will find a bone to pick with anyone. Regardless of whether it's valid, they will find something to criticize. They'll also probably do their best to pepper in a couple insults and maybe a few degrading remarks. Why? Trolls thrive off it. 🤡 The thought of a smarta$$ comment that demeans someone makes them feel mightier than thou. Posting hate gives them the temporary sense of control that they're so desperately missing from their own lives. So, since they're so very lonely, let's make sure to say hi! 🙋‍♀️ Let's give a big round of applause to welcome some of the fresh trolls who have wandered over! 👏 This isn't my first rodeo, so I'm ready for the ride. 🎢 But to those who have faced harsh criticism and are struggling to process it and respond, I have this to say: 📢 What the haters throw your way says more about them than about you. & Remember: We're in good company ❤

Learning new things! ⭐ #1piece1hour1minute 💫 Swipe for my #honestpracticesession ×✌ This is my first day of working on Chopin's Op. 24 No. 2 in C major, and I'm still figuring it out. Freshly learned and undetempo, here's what I worked on today. 1️⃣ Figuring out phrasing, accents, slurs, lifts, and markings. Even though I know what it says in the music, I'm still unconvinced with my own readings of what's on the page. Constantly doing a double take in disbelie, I still have a ways to go before things start to feel organic. 2️⃣ Understanding the dynamics. There are so many subito changes throughout this. Capturing them requires understanding of the reasons behind each individual character change. I'm starting to figure it out, but still having moments of battling my instincts (ex. my processing of the sempre piano is delayed because it feels like it shouldn't drop there, but it does...see 3rd video for a live take of me figuring it out.) 3️⃣ Fingering. Especially in the left hand. Hands separate practice definitely helped me make some focused decisions (2nd video). It's coming, but I still have choices that I have to make, and I'm not commited to them yet. Day 1 of this work, though, so patience is key. This is #day33 of #100daysofpractice 🗓 A long way to go...
