Northern Ballet's Romeo and Juliet It was beautiful. I don't know where to start. @larose.dominique as Juliet. This is now my favourite role I've seen Dominique in. Absolutely stunning. It was as if her & @joey_t999 were the first and only people to have ever played them. When they first set eyes on each other, & then cannot look away and are still staring at each other across the room, and for the entirety of the scene. You can hear Shakespeare's words in all of their looks. I need multiple sets of eyes as always, because I couldn't take my eyes off them at all, but then there's also Mercutio being a cheeky oik, commanding attention, @kokmister was so good at that. The dramatics. I love when they get over the top dramatic with it. Romeo pining. Capulet Mum Abigail Prudames being a whole slay. Romeo pining. Meowing. Hissing. Rain. The set is just perfect. The costumes. The masks & head pieces! 😍 Costume department kills it every single time. The music. Ugh. ❤️ Hearing an orchestra live, playing this Prokofiev score so passionately. Again, the combination of live orchestra and incredible storytelling from the dancers, they lift each other up and it is the presence of both that make Northern Ballet magic. All the scenes with Romeo and Juliet alone on the stage together were stand out moments. Dominique's scenes in the third act were so visceral. This whole performance is going to go up there as one of my favourites of all time. The two leads are the absolute stars of this show. I'd still watch a show chronicling the day to day life of @hmlehan Nurse though, being spun around every which way in that fantastic costume. And lads being lads with Mercutio and Benvolio. In the intervals so many audience members came to peek at the orchestra pit, because the pit is magical. Tonight was Northern Ballet's Romeo and Juliet, with live music from the Sinfonia The first ballet I ever saw was Romeo and Juliet. It was a touring European company, with an orchestra. It was sweet, and I fell in love with ballet then. So to have Northern Ballet bringing their version was exciting. Except I haven't really been enjoying the lead up as normal, because all I can think about is the orchestra and how I've merely gotten lucky. I am lucky Norwich bagged the part of the tour with the orchestra. In Autumn, this will be performed to recorded music. (One of the Autumn tour stops is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, no less). Since the announcement last year Northern Ballet would be switching to recorded music for many of their performances, I have been through many emotions. But now I have watched this production and I truly cannot conceive of seeing it without the live music there. My heart goes out to the Sinfonia, who are being removed from this thing they belong to, and that is their livelihood. For over a decade I have been utterly besotted with this company. Since my first one, Cleopatra in 2011, which remains such a magical memory for me, Northern Ballet became one of my main sources of joy, because this company is special. I cannot stress that enough. I cannot gush about them enough. I will do a seperate post gushing about this production because there will not be space here. Every single time I am presented with such attention to detail. The gorgeousness of everything. The dancers who act with every fibre of their being. The beautiful music with an orchestra pit fuller than any other show I see. And now, a chunk of their heart is getting cut out, and it is this whole huge beating heart that makes them special. For the first time in over ten years, I will not be seeing Northern Ballet when they return later in the year. I simply would not be able to sit there, with the cavernous empty orchestra pit shut up beneath, and be able to feel joy. Nor watch the dancers with this frozen recording that cannot at all be bonded with in the same way, or evolve together at all. (Continued in comments)

And last night was our last Tosca performance for this series..... pretty much a completely sold out run. 9 performances (in all fairness, we did the whole Ring in between 😂🤣).... 4 Toscas, 3 Cavaradossis, 2 Scapria (but one of them not the originally scheduled 😅), 2 Angelotti, 2 Sagrestano, 3 conductors (!!) and a reliable (thanks goodness) set of Spoletta, Sciarrone and Carceliere after, we are done for the Season (with Tosca). It's always amazing how much different artists bring to the same show, even when basically doing "the same". It's like watching Parallel Univerdes (and still, everyone dies at the end, just the same 😝). That took me across the 10 shows line in the season..... still 3 more to go. #thendisnear . We use references. We trace. We paint over. We adjust. What makes us artists ISNT drawing from scratch. It’s the ability to use what’s in the world to create something different. I’m upset about this false sense of artistic integrity everyone is toting about. Stop trying to take each other down and support creativity! I posted the image of this witch hunt here. As you can see, there are parts where the image was utilized and traced over. But can we really ignore that the art created was a LION PLAYING BASEBALL and not a portrait of a real lion?! Who cares if they used the mane line. The snout is different, and the ear! I also refuse to ignore that the color schemes are completely different. Even if the lines were copied, you have to use different cold and warm values to get the same shading effect on a piece of art in a different hue. Yes, there is technology to help facilitate this. Of course there is, and of course we should use it. The world is moving too fast to stay behind simply on a sense of pride. In summary, all artists can and should do this. I can't begin to tell you how sad the latest Northern Ballet new season announcement has left me. Yes, sad. Jane Eyre with live music, wonderful, as it should be. A Christmas Carol, however. You know, the story of the miserly old man cutting costs to the detriment of everyone... recorded music. I've seen NB's A Christmas Carol multiple times over the years and it is so joyous and magical. It's the connection between the dancers and the live music which makes up a big part of that. The thought of seeing it with an empty orchestra pit between me and the stage...I don't even want to. I'm not going to, as much as it pains me because this company is such a treasure to me. But if I went I know I wouldn't be able to enjoy it properly. My time and funds will be better spent seeing the companies that have retained this integral part of themselves for every performance. The musicians are an integral part of theatre, ballet and opera. I go to the theatre for them as much as the performances on the stage. Live theatre is supposed to be live theatre. I want to hear this music live. I want these incredible dancers to be dancing with an orchestra. #KeepNorthernBalletLive

The second is the @bouldersymphony Boulder Symphony's mission is to connect with and profoundly affect the human spirit through symphonic music. They envision a community that is informed, connected and inspired by the arts. In collaboration with Fine Art alumna Hannah Hill, we are excited to launch a Fundraising Raffle for the Principal’s Fund at @cglartschool. Entrants will have the opportunity to win a brilliant new artwork by @hanecdote, created especially for this campaign. ‘Protect the arts’ 54cm x 58cm (approx.) Calico, digitally printed felt, brown wool felt, embroidery thread and glass beads with a wood dowel. Hannah was inspired by the Art School’s fundraising appeal during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wanting to give back to the Art School, she designed this beautiful textile work which brings together the Art School’s specialisms and is a call to protect the arts and creative industries. The funds raised from this raffle will go directly to the Principal’s Fund, which enhances our core provision and creates increased opportunities for students. This helps to ensure that the most promising individuals can thrive on our courses. 100% of proceeds will support City & Guilds of London Art School in its charitable mission. Tonight was @NorthernBallet's Beauty and the Beast. As y'all know, this is my favourite ballet company. The dancers are pure joy. The costumes are gorgeous. The sets are magical. The music is always beautiful & played by an orchestra of incredible musicians. A few months ago, it was announced Northern Ballet would be making cuts and it broke my heart. Tonight at the theatre we were greeted by the musicians. The pit was white with t-shirts for the cause instead of the usual black. It made me sad. It makes me angry. I go to the theatre not only for the performance on the stage but to hear these scores played live. With Northern Ballet we get the classics. Tchaikovsky. Debussy. And also their original pieces. I fell in love with the score to Merlin last year, thanks to the heart it was played with by the sinfonia. I've been watching NB for over ten years and one of the things that makes their productions special is how full their orchestra pits always are. Without these musicians, something absolutely essential to what makes this a magical experience will be lost. A treat to see @hmlehan in the silly sisters role along with Julie Nunes. 🛍 @albertgo14 has what I like to call classic Northern Ballet joy. They exude joy. They act everything, no matter how minor the character. They draw your eye everytime they're on stage. They're what I adore about this company, because over all the years as dancers come and go, I don't have long to be sad over it as new favourites emerge, the standard never drops, every single dancer is top tier giving pieces of magic to the stage. Also I'd love to see him as Simon in Swan Lake please. The whole company is, as I can endlessly gush, the best. ❤️
