Come tomorrow morning I'll have another SNL on my dvr, and that's just fine with me. Some people swear it hasn't been good in years, but those people are wrong - they just don't watch often enough to familiarize themselves with the newer casts and their individual comedy styles. Usually the "last good cast" people come up with is whatever their first cast was, which is pretty telling. Some years are of course stronger than others, but the show's been pretty consistently solid for a while. This particular record is the first cast, and they're fine of course. Some of the material is funnier than the rest, some of it has aged considerably worse than the rest, and a lot of what makes me actually chuckle is jokes that I'm already kinda familiar with, much like the way the show itself has been appreciated through the years. "On October 31, after weeks of working out new material at the Comedy Store, I performed before a sold-out audience at the Circle Star Theater outside San Francisco, my first concert in nearly six years. Didn't matter how many times I done this before, I was scared, man. I truly was. First of all, they call it standup comedy, but I found myself having to adapt the format with a big easy chair placed in the center of the stage. Swallowing more fear than I'd known my entire life, I gingerly made my way across the stage with the assistance of a silver-handled cane. Then I sat down. It wasn't easy. The crowd thought they were there to laugh, but my physical condition also gave them some major drama. Gave me some, too. You know? Afterward, I thought I had kicked ass. The reviews were mostly in agreement. Encouraged, I hit the road. Although it wasn't anywhere near the same as it had been in the past none of the drug-induced craziness, the spur-of-the-moment insanity with womens-the outpouring of love I felt was overly generous. But, after a few gigs, I realized that I had more heart than energy, more courage than strength. Just turning in a decent forty minutes exhausted me way too much. The mind was willing. But my feets couldn't carry me to the end zone. Knowing I was unable to continue through the early months of 1993, I canceled the rest of the tour. What a b*tch, you know? It destroyed me emotionally. All the sh*t that I wanted to say was in my head with nowhere to go. I could hear the applause. I imagined the rejuvenating effect of laughter.
