I actually prefer watching #Alien3 on #VHS because it masks the problem with the early CGI alien FX quite well 😄. Still can’t consider this entry cannon because of the fate of Newt and Hicks but I like to see it as a bleak alternate timeline. House of Dracula * released in 1945 * starring Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine * black and white horror film * Universal Monsters The Plot: Dracula and the Wolf Man show up at a doctor’s castle in the hope of being cured of their inflictions. What do you know about Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein’s monster, all being in the same movie. The positives: * the look of John Carradine as Dracula (not his acting, I prefer Lugosi in the role) * a few impressive shots / scenes: including the no mirror reflection, long shadow on the wall, and the full moon hitting Talbot’s face * Beethoven’s music * Wolf transformation to and from * The doctor being infected by Dracula’s blood and seeing what he can accomplish The negatives: * They never could figure out the flying bat prop * Frankenstein doesn’t have much to do. He was just thrown into the mix. * The ending has no great showdown. The “monsters” really don’t battle each other. This is not one of the better entries but it’s ok. Never Been Kissed, 1999 💋📓 Drew Barrymore stars as Josie Geller, a naive 25 year old journalist being sent back to high school by a flippant boss who tells her to get the scoop on kids these days. She was a nerd in high school and she's a nerd now that's she's pretending to be 17 again. Its aged pretty alright considering the obvious hot buttons of a rom com about a 25 year old going to high school (will the romance be her and another student or her and a teacher?? Either one is not looking good) though of course there's the odd mention of underage girls being attractive. It is about adults posing as high schoolers, having inappropriate and nearly predatory relationships with them, though no actually upsetting acts happen and it's kept above board in my opinion. Have you seen it? What do you think? It works because the story laughs at itself. The casting is honestly perfect, Molly Shannon plays Anita, a horny friend and coworker from the paper Josie works at and she balances Josie's wide eyed naivety really well. There's no slut shaming in the movie which is refreshing. Add this to your stack of Shakespeare adaptations in high school settings! As You Like It is mentioned and discussed in class- as I understood it, the play is about love and identity, and wearing a mask or taking on another identity can enable you to become versions of yourself that you may not be able to otherwise and open you up to relationships you otherwise couldn't. Something like that. This was the first production by Flower Films, the production company that Drew Barrymore started up with Nancy Juvonen in 1995. Drew is one of my favourite children grown to adults of Hollywood-- she's done it all.
