John Witherspoon John Witherspoon was an American character actor and stand-up comedian who performed in various television shows and films. Witherspoon played Willie Jones in the Friday series, and starred in films such as Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Boomerang (1992), The Five Heartbeats (1991), and Vampire in Brooklyn (1995). In addition, Witherspoon made appearances on television shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994), The Wayans Bros. (1995โ1999), The Tracy Morgan Show (2003), Barnaby Jones (1973), The Boondocks (2005โ2014), and Black Jesus (2014โ2019). He wrote a film, From the Old School, in which he played an elderly working man who tries to prevent a neighborhood convenience store from being developed into a strip club. Witherspoon worked occasionally as a model. During the 1960s and 1970s, he began his stand-up comedy career. He had many friends in the business, including Tim Reid (while he was working on WKRP in Cincinnati and The Richard Pryor Show), Robin Williams (also on The Richard Pryor Show), Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Witherspoon performed in many feature films (usually comedies), including Friday (and its sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next), Hollywood Shuffle, Iโm Gonna Git You Sucka, Bird, Vampire in Brooklyn, and The Meteor Man. Witherspoon was also known for his over-the-top characters in films such as House Party, in which he played an irritated neighbor who is repeatedly woken up by the party, and Boomerang with Eddie Murphy, where he plays Mr. Jackson, the ill-mannered father of Murphyโs best friend. His fame drove him to become a public supporter of civil rights and an opponent of the Vietnam War. He was also among the first blacks with their names on the ballot to run for the presidency in the United States in 1968. In his later years, he focused more on health and fitness matters. Unfortunately Witherspoon passed on October 29, 2019, at age 77. HAPPY 4/20!!! Mr. Cinema Movie Appreciation Post: Friday (1995) For this โspecial occasionโ, the most classic stoner film that Iโll be appreciating today is Ice Cubeโs โFridayโ. This is the most classic, ghetto movie of all time. I grew up in the ghetto part of Ohio, and I know a little about what it is like down in South Central Los Angeles. The way people who live down there were portrayed in the movie was very accurate. Chris Tucker cracks me up in any movie heโs in, and Ice Cube is just all-around talented. I make it a point to take this movie out and play it at least once a month. And of course, this is the perfect stoner classic to get your smoke on. The movie has a hilarious supporting cast; including Faizon Love, Nia Long, Regina King, and the late stars John Witherspoon, Tiny Lister, and Bernie Mac. The script by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh is right on target with itโs ghetto humor. Another plus point for the film is it doesnโt stereotype. And as one would expect, Friday features a strong hip-hop soundtrack, featuring tracks by such artists as Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill, Mack 10, and Funkdoobiest, as well as old-school R&B selections from The Isley Brothers, Roger, and Rose Royce. Overall, Friday is still an all-time classic, and I do love the sequels a lot (mostly Next Friday).
