No offense to the rest of sewing Instagram, but I have no idea why you all love this pattern so much. The front waist is at least an inch, maybe inch and a half higher than the back waist. The crossover is also tacked a smidge too low, but that’s a me mistake. This is my opportunity to share my latest @helens__closet #BlackwoodCardigan in this beautiful lacey wool knit I bought in Japan. I somewhat regret not buying the charcoal grey, as I feel like that's more my colour. The black feels a bit severe honestly, but the fabric is beautiful and it's so snuggly. I believe it's a combo of merino, cashmere and mohair but I can't remember the specifics. I did a massive full bicep adjustment on this pattern cos my upper arms cannot be contained. This @helens__closet #AshtonTop is a fave, though I took the bust darts too low, and it unfortunately has several dinner medals (thanks to @purplesewingcloud for the term!) from cooking without an apron and the stains won't come out. I wore this to give myself an idea of what to do to salvage it, but I'm still needing to mull it over. They're not noticeable on camera but they are fairly noticeable in person. The skirt is RTW I got in Poland back in 2018 that I had to mend cos it's probably fast fashion and the elastic busted. The tights are cute, but not stretchy enough. They're wool Ambra tights. Busy Saturday until about 1pm, celebrating my best friend’s birthday on Sunday, and weird perimenopause emotions today. Plus I need to fix my stash cabinet so that’s going to be fun 😬 I hate to say this but I don’t like these joggers nearly as much as the pink pair I made last year. 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹: 13 pieces. 6 weeks. My wardrobe just isn’t what it used to be. My body has gone through so many changes over the last couple of years, between having a baby and nursing and health stuff — a lot of my most beloved garments just don’t fit anymore. For Mother’s Day, I got a closet re-org. We tore down the old basic rod and shelf and installed a whole new system with drawers and shelves and organizers galore. In the process, I donated two extra large trash bags and recycled another large bag full of clothes that don’t fit anymore. Some I dated back decades! So, now that I’m feeling more like myself again, I have big goals to create a capsule wardrobe that feels like 𝓶𝓮. I’m setting a goal of having these 13 pieces done by the time I leave for a European vacation at the end of June — a big goal given I’ve only made one thing in the last 10 weeks. ✨But I’m putting it out into the universe that I’m going to feel well and up to sewing for the next six weeks. #MeMadeMay2024 and #SeatedMakesChallenge2024 day...17? Another photoshoot where I had some photo bombers! This time Bandit had the audacity to not even let me sit! Swipe to slide three for a blooper I had to include for your amusement. I'm going to have to photo ID that one. Lol. So, wearing the same RTW pants from yesterday but this time with a @fridaypatterncompany #PatinaBlouse that hasn't made it onto the grid. This is a beautiful sage green viscose crepe from @weftandwarpfabrics with LOVELY hand feel. It's completely sold out but pls check out their other gorgeous fabrics because we love them there ❤️ Unfortunately this fabric hasn't held up particularly well on this make. This could super easily be user error, were I to make it with this fabric again I wouldn't grade the seams the way I usually grade them, however it also stains SO easily and pulls even easier. I'm not used to viscose being quite this precious, it feels way more akin to silk to me. Because of this, I probably wouldn't purchase it again, bit too high needs for this messy girl with cats. However it goes alright with these pants when I WFH so I might try and fix the bits that are coming apart cos it's heaven on the skin. This goes to my realization about my shirt needs, love floaty soft fabrics, and I'm keen to try out some silk noil and harder wearing sand washed silk to try and achieve this in more practical ways. I realized with styling these pants that the proportions look better with a lower neckline, so more Patinas are perfect! Also, on a re-wearing of this @truebias #MarloSweater (going off memory so correct me if I got the details wrong) I realised I need to address the fact that it is impossible to keep on my shoulders. And tbh with this outfit, it's all a bit too oversized. Anyways, all good lessons to take forward with my makes! PS. Anyone finding that adding hashtags suddenly feels a bit futile? Took my new coverstitch for a spin yesterday and I’m super happy with her so far. #memademay day 15 Another day in the office means another quick desk picture This is #m7900 in a liberty lawn I stashed 2 years ago, and finished in March. In theory, loved the idea of it as a transitional top for both work and play. In reality, the crop is CROPPED. My jeans aren’t as high rise as needed, and these pants are barely okay. I do love a puff sleeve though to balance out the rest of my torso I tried to get out of doing a small FBA by stealing from the center front seam allowance, and by the pulling you can’t tell that didn’t work. I am wondering if cutting an 18 for the shoulders and length but a 20 for the width would be the cheater FBA I’m looking for. Pants aren’t me made but they are me hemmed? Oh hi, it’s me again. My sinus infection from hell is FINALLY over. My surgery got rescheduled for July, so I’m just sitting here hoping that I don’t get another infection before then. In the meantime, I’m feeling well enough to sew again! 🎉 I spent Mother’s Day sewing up these @gertie18 #audreycigarettepants. I LOVE them. Some folks warned me that the rise is a bit high on these, but it’s perfect for my preferences. @MeMadeMay2024 and @SeatedMakesChallenge2024 Day 14. Today my @erstwilder brooch and earnings from the Frida Kahlo collection showed up, and this is officially my first brooch! As influenced by @sewverymuch and @retro_novella! I couldn't resist a hand holding a paintbrush (last slide). Because of this I thought it was a perfect day to wear my black broderie anglaise Night and Day dress (yes there are more versions that haven't made it on to the grid). This is another one that was stress sewed earlier this year. The fabric is beautiful but hard to capture, and I got it from @thesewingshoppe in Canberra (hope I tagged the right one). It's almost seersucker in the way the broderie pattern impacts the fall of the fabric. I'll take a detail pic later. I think it's also the first time this bright kelly green cardigan has made it on the main. It's a thrifted mohair/wool cardigan that I love but that the cats continue to destroy. Perfect for adding a pop of colour to an otherwise drab outfit, and perfectly matches my accessories! I so love the texture and I continue to realise how important texture is to my clothing, particularly when wearing solid colours. Black is not my colour, but when I wear darker colours I notice they suit me better, think I have a medium contrast face etc? Seems to suit darker shades. My blue dress from yesterday is a good example in a colour that does suit me! The tights are wool ambra tights, they don't fit me perfectly and they love falling down 🙃. I came home yesterday from an epic #bracamp retreat hosted @makershideaway and @stylemakerfabrics. @whatbellamade was our fantastic instructor and it was so great to deep dive into fitting, underwires and how to evaluate fit issues. I’ve learned so much and developed lasting connections with an amazing group of women. We all finished our bra and we all had ones we could wear and have worked a plan for updates for the next one. This weekend it confirmed what I knew - commercial bra sizing is for the birds. The bra is the #harrietbra by @clothhabit and I’ve got my next one cut out already. The weekend itself was wonderful, we were all cared for by Sharon and Michelle - I always love connecting with them. And they did an amazing job coordinating with Mother Nature 😜! #MeMadeMay2024 Day 10 (late post): Still here, still working on taking photos! The top is my very first Adrienne Blouse and I love it! I made a straight size large and I appreciate that there are instructions on how to do a simple FBA. The top comes together very quickly and since the front and back are the same there are only 3 pattern pieces. I see why @ninetostitch has made so many! As far as yardage, I was able to get this top and the tshirt from earlier this month out of 2 yards of fabric. For my next version I will shorten the shoulder elastic by an inch; the large called for 7 inches buy I have slumpy shoulders so they kept falling down over the course of the night. The skirt is a tried and true M8051. I made this to replace my velour version because that ones a bit too small. I cut a 16 but sewed the skirt with 1/2 inch seam allowances because I wanted to make sure it fit; in hindsight, I could have sew it up normally lol. This skirt only uses about a half yard of fabric in my size so it's actually perfect for remnants. I just bought this fabric so I'm pretty sure it's still available. Tights are Sheertex in their super sheer. I feel you can get a pair for $30-35 I think they're worth it. Between my nails and my cat, most of my other stockings develop holes very quickly. A @sewhouse7 #teahousedress in red check flannel. I got the end of the bolt of this fabric from @districtfabric circa... 2016/2017 specifically to make a Tea House dress. Then I psyched myself out about fitting for 6ish years 🤪 I'm on the upper end of their standard size range and wasn't sure if I'd need a lot of fitting and if I'd comfortably work in the range. So I kept sitting on it in case the extended sizes came out until... Finally I tried on a black Tea House top that @shanski.gee brought to our @seattlesewsmeetups clothes swap and realized I could totally make the standard block work. This is a straight size 18. The only mod was lowering the waist line / ties to give more vertical bust room. I did this by adding 1 5/8" to the front yoke, removing the same from the lower center front skirt, and lowering the bust curve on the front to match. (Picture 5). It was a pretty easy fit journey and make. I'm hoping Sew House Seven will release in their extended size range. I am SO proud of my new make... my first ever button up! @fridaypatterncompany say that the #butanobuttonup is ideal for beginners so this was a perfect match! I really wanted a versatile garment that would work in multiple ways - see the photos for ideas - so I chose a super lightweight cotton from @rainbowfabrickilburn. I am delighted with the variety of ways I have already been able to wear it. I found the instructions super straightforward, and they guided me through my first ever collar without any major meltdowns! I am outside the size range on the hips so added the relevant amount to the sideseams to maintain the original ease and it is a very comfy fit without drowning me. I also did my usual y shaped FBA and a small full bicep adjustment too. I only needed one toile so it was an easy fit with only standard for me adjustments. To celebrate their wonderful new pattern @fridaypatterncompany are offering 25% off the pattern, using the code BUTANO I was paid for testing the pattern and sharing photos. #MeMadeMay2024 Day 8: No posts for days 6&7 because I couldn't be bothered to brush my hair 😂. Today I took a walk to a very cute pastry shop nearby. As I type this I'm sitting on their patio enjoying an iced tea and a cheddar and chive scone. It's 74°F (23°C) and aggressively sunny out so I'll probably head indoors in 5 minutes, hopefully that's enough vitamin d for the day! If my arms & chest look a little shiny it's because I'm trying out a new glowy/shimmery body sunscreen. I have mixed feelings about it so far. If you care about my sunscreen opinions, let me know! I wear sunscreen everyday and love having opinions on things lol. This dress pattern comes in a floor length version and I'm debating using it for my frocktails dress. Maybe in a blue velvet? For this summer I’ll probably make at least one more, pinching out some of the gapping at the armpits and rotating into the dart, as well as experimenting with making a square neckline? Finally finished!! I've wanted a 3 piece suit for an age and I finally found the vest pattern that isn't so much work to alter for a busty chest. This is actually all @gertie18 's charm pattern patreon. I Still have a jacket to make! The Lady Dandy vest was fiddly to make, but that was partially because I couldn't concentrate and the instructions don't have pictures. Me Made May week 1 One day it's 24° the next day it's 9°... Welcome to Dutch spring. I even wore a wool sweater this week but didn't take a photo that day. To be honest I wasn't sure if I was going to join in me made May, between having to deal with a lot of pain lately and seeing the horrible situation in Gaza unfold... I didn't really feel like it. It's a very precise pattern and it lines up beautifully. I made size 6 cup D with no other adjustment except droping a dart by an inch. I love pieces with interesting draping - and the pleat looks complicated but is not complicated to construct. This is an eggplant purple rayon from an etsy shop going out of business... 4ish years ago. I like to let pieces marinate in the stash! It's taken a bit of trial and error to figure out how to style this, but I think these two options are winners. Obviously, it pairs with the @eble_textiles #staleytop, a cropped tee / pullover. I've made at least 4 of them and dig the easy, oversized but not sloppy look. This is a really nice lightweight French terry from the aforementioned etsy store, and it's sooooo cozy. I just squeezed it out of a 1.25 (a 60" wide yard) remnant. Option 2 is another @sewhouse7 #skylinetee in a sapphire cotton from SH7s online store. I *****love***** this color. 💙 Fit notes: Reznor - size h waist blended to a size j hip. In my next version, I'd lengthen the lining a bit. Staley - Size H shoulder / Size I body. I made this sweater back in 2021 but never wore it outside because the combination of fabric and length didn't work with my style at the time. Shortly after #memademay2021 I (poorly) shortened this sweater by 6 inches. So an item that was mostly worn at home became an item that's in my regular rotation! A @sewhouse7 #skylinetee in a bamboo knit from SH7's online shop (sold out). I bought this pattern right when it came out. I've made 4 or 5 so far and made a couple of muslins as well to really nail the fit. This was my first time making a v-neck tshirt and the instructions are fantastic. Peggy always gives great construction tips, and I got a really nice result on the first go. I like the slim fit of this tee and am ecstatic about the bust fit - basically, no side boob fabric folds. It's a miracle. It's described as a leotard / bodysuit style fit with negative ease. It's perfect for layering and a super useful wearable basic. I did find the armholes to be high and tight and the bicep to be narrow on my first go round. I'm not sure if this is intentional to the close fit of the design or just how the block fits my body. The fit of this T-shirt really depends on getting the right stretch and recovery. I've been happier with the ones I've made that have a little bit of a softer drape and good but not aggressive recovery. This bamboo jersey is perfect. Happy Me Made May and hooray for my final collaboration with Cashmerette Club! 🎉 This is my take on May’s pattern - the Briarwood Top. For my collab swan song, I wanted to try my hand at Extreme Pattern Hacking 🤘 It was a bit harrowing for this hacking newb, but I think I was pretty successful? The Briarwood is a boho-style top with long sleeves and a peplum. I’ve been looking for a milkmaid-style pattern for a while and haven’t found one that fits my measurements and is made for a more curvy body. When I saw the Briarwood pattern, I knew the bodice seams, gathered bust panel, and elasticated sleeves would be the perfect base for the type of dress I envisioned. I made quite a few mods to get the look I was going for - I’ll share details in a post later this week (along with seated photos!) TL;DR mods included changing the shape of the underbust seam to be more curvy, adding a keyhole/tie/ruffle detail to the top of the bodice, shortening the sleeves and adding ruffles, omitting the zipper, and replacing the peplum with a skirt. The fabric is deep-stash cotton seersucker from @joann_stores (side note - is it just me, or are some of Joann’s best fabrics in the kid’s section?) Happy #MeMadeMay2024! Starting strong today and trying to take @alexandria_arnold's advice (no makeup, don't be precious about it cos you'll post more!). Not Golden Hour cos I don't have great spots to take photos in at that time! This is a heavily modified Night and Day Dress by Charm patterns. Re-wearing my first one at Frocktails made me realize how close the fit was to being spot on! So I've made a heap cos it's a pretty good block for me now and as always I love a dramatic sleeve. Can't remember the maximum size for this one but pretty sure it's below my current minimum for pattern purchasing (hence the lack of tag). Still some tweaking to do at the waist to accommodate the occasional Endo belly, but otherwise it's pretty functional for me. Fabric is a beautiful light cotton shirting that was on sale at @wearethefabricstore. Perfect toile material! Perfect for the bishop sleeves! oh! And I added a packet to the sleeves cos my wrists were swimming without one. Stolen from the #PatinaBlouse (a fave). Tights aren't size inclusive, just a desperate myer purchase, and the cardigan is old Dangerfield. Will add photo description and sizing in comments. Making a Butterick #b6024 top which is one of the few Big4 patterns that comes in a small enough (full bust at 30” which makes high bust 28”) size to fit my high bust. This does mean I need to make a #fullbustadjustment which is loads of fun when it has pintucks. Tissue fitting showed that I needed to take a dart from the armhole which let need close that and open up the extra length I needed at center front. Luckily, the added width at the bottom is fine as my hip size is a large which didn’t come with this size set. I used the side seams for the M for the width which worked with the dart in the front armhole and the fact that I usually have to adjust for a prominent shoulder blade. I have been working on this #psbyrdiebuttonup for three weeks and I just tried it on to confirm that my buttonhole placement would work. And the shirt is absolutely terrible and not wearable. I did the pleated version with the stand collar in this yummy #riflepaperco viscose. But even though the pattern recommends viscose, it’s too shifty and not stable enough for this shirt. One side is somehow considerably longer than the other, which may have been due to overhandling of the fabric but I don’t really know. The pleated front also doesn’t suit me. The fabric is puffy over my abdomen and reminds me of maternity clothes. I won’t even be bothering to sew the buttons on at this point because I’m so terribly disappointed in this shirt. I’ll try again with the non-pleated version, in a nice cotton. But never again in viscose. I just want to move on from this disappointment. I’ll probably put it in the giveaway at the upcoming #instagramsewistspicnicyvr because who knows, maybe someone else will love it? Apparently it’s going to be a Very Floral Spring™️ for me🌸 As soon as I saw @missalishagrace tease her latest Know Me pattern, I knew I had to make it. Like, I couldn’t think about anything else but making the skirt 😅 I’m such a sucker for a skirt with a yoke - make it a midi and it’s pretty much perfect in my book. Make it a POINTY yoke and I can’t even 🥵 I’m ridiculously excited with how the skirt turned out - the fit is perfect and the only mod I made was to lengthen the skirt pieces 2”. The fit is true to size. I skipped the crop top from the pattern and instead paired my skirt with a TNT pattern - the Ashton Top from @helens__closet. The short a-line shape of the Ashton is purrrfect for showing off high waisted skirts and I’ll probably be living in some variation of this ensemble all spring/ summer. What's the best way to get your #sewjo back? I'm taking the "starting multiple projects at the same time" approach. This is a pyjama top, which I've done a 5" #fullbustadjustment on. The second and third pictures show the new pattern piece compared to the old. I've left the extra volume around the hips as I'm quite hippy and as it's PJs I thought looser would be better. The #FBA added a dart at chest height in a dartless pattern, so I then rotated this out at the hip (a process I've never done before). FIBREMOOD CARA It's linkparty time again which means lots of inspo and lots of fun people showing their @fibremood makes. I made fibremood Cara, a fun and easy to make shirt, which I chose because I had the perfect fabric waiting in my stash. I paired it with my new silver cargo jeans. I'm still trying to recover my sewjo. I'm making the #AustinDress by @grainlinestudio, the pattern is cut for a D cup, my high bust puts me at a size 14, that would mean I need to do a 6 inch #FBA, 3" on each side. However, I decided to make a size 16 and only do a 4" #fullbustadjustment . Here are my steps over 10 photos 1. Copy of the original pattern, red lines are through the pattern marked bust point and centre of the dart. 2. I've cut through the red lines. 3. I've added extra paper behind the pattern and used my quilting ruler to add 2" to the width and 1 inch at the bottom. 4. Using the paper pattern, I've added my approximate bust apex. I've drawn a line through the centre of the dart to the breast apex and marked 1" from the apex for the dart. 5/6. Marked the new dart and leveled the bottom of the pattern, with the added length. 7. Folded up the dart and tried it against my body, the breast apex did not match, marked a new apex. 8. The red pen marks are the new dart based on the redone apex. 9. Tidied up the armscye. 10. Is it still April? The days seem to all blend into one, I’m losing track of time, and the weather is all over the place. But the calendar tells me that it is, so here is another new blouse for the #sewaprilblouse24 challenge from @clothedit and @theyorkshiresewgirl. This is definitely the most oversized garment I’ve made to date, and I am pleased as punch with it. My journey to the true oversize has been very long and slow, and I realise the trend is on the downturn now. But so what, I’ll still enjoy wearing this blouse and will definitely make at least one more like it. I can hear the striped silk calling out to me, wanting to be just this and nothing else. The pattern was created using my 3D body scan by @natalyasyry The credit for the inspiration goes to Brunello Cucinelli. The silk batik was an unexpected ebay find. It’s fine and floaty, yet handled beautifully: no excessive fraying, no unexpected stretching, only moderate slipping, tolerated pressing well. If I ever come across another piece like that, it’s definitely coming home with me. The flat felled seams were a bit of a challenge due to the construction of the sleeves/yoke. I’ve made them work in this blouse but will need to think of a suitable alternative for the next one. #sewaprilblouse24 #sewover50 #sewingmywardrobe #stillsewingstories #sewbusty
I sewed the @stitchwitchpatterns #tudorblouse from some old bedsheets I found in my Nana-in-laws house. This year I'm trying to sew what I have; make more tried-and-true patterns and use fabrics from my stash or from secondhand sources, so this was a good first step; I've had the Tudour Blouse pattern bought and printed for the longest time and just never got around to sewing it up; this top seems to look good on eeeeveryone so I was so excited to have a cute little blouse, too! I don't know what compelled me to believe that the C/D cup version of this top would work with my #sewbusty GG chest but it turned out just a touch low-cut for me and I'll be making an FBA to my next version.
