I am almost finished with the girls jackets! Even though here it doesn't get really that cold but it's a little chilly in the morning so the girls always wear a light sweater to school. @thatlenaking made a great post last week about how to lower the cost of sewing, and it got me thinking about just how much my own financial considerations shape my sewing practice and my personal aesthetic. Here are a few things I do to keep costs down: - Draft patterns instead of buying them - Work in nonstretch cotton instead of more expensive technical fabrics - Keep certain design elements (zipper length, waistband width, fabric weight) consistent & buy supplies in bulk - Keep an eye out for fabric offcuts, remnants, and garment industry surplus - I can’t tell you how many times I get beautiful cotton lawns for $5 a yard this way! - Repurpose scraps - Make things I like rather than what’s trendy These pants are a case in point: I drafted the pattern, sleuthed around and found this twill for $6 a yard at Fabric Direct, got the zippers in bulk from Wawak, and used offcuts from a dress I made last year for the pocketing. Excluding my time (which is a big exclusion!) they probably cost about $15 in materials. They’re not especially in style so they’ll never be out of style. They’re very me 🥰 Any fellow frugal sewists out there? If you have more tips for keeping costs down, I’d love to hear them! It’s my cousins wedding in a couple of weeks. I haven’t been to many weddings since I started sewing, so obviously I need to make something. The problem is I have too many ideas. I love sewing for events, put I hate the process. It’s always the same, I will get too many ideas and then end up with several half made projects. Or I’ll make a decision, then change my mind once it’s finished and panic sew something else. I think this one is going to have to take some serious planning and no flip flopping! I am very excited to turn all of these into dress eventually though.

Hot off the machine: Helsinki blouse by @leslubiesdecadia This was a quick make, the construction of the blouse is really simple and there is a very good tutorial on YouTube, showing almost every step. I like the cowl, and I squeezed it out of a very small remnant 💪 But,unfortunately, It's a to big on me. When I tuck it in it spreads like a tent. I had more scraps: the last of silk I bought in 2021 in Greece and a smidge of lace from Amsterdam. I did buy the brown elastics for this one, so I could dive into my ‘70s vibe. Sometimes basic sewing is all you need… life is complicated, I’m overworked, end of the semester, grading, writing, an eval, my heart hurts…though, arranging scraps like puzzle pieces to fit the pattern, slow sewing small seams, refitting from body changes, and the humming of my machine are quite good at calming the soul and letting my overworking mind take a breather. These days I’m trying to be more conscious of balancing my time and myself. It’s an interesting phenomenon to swing from lost sewjo to creative overwhelm. Strangely lately I’ve had so many sewing ideas that the results was the same: me not sewing anything. My mind wondered from one project to the next until it finally stopped at this idea of a Ralph Lauren inspired classic white shirt dress. I used McCall’s 7351 #m7351, view D and added 8 inches to the length of the skirt to maximize twirl-ability. I found this heavy PFD (prepared for dyeing) Tencel twill in my stash that I’d found in the @lafashiondistrict for $2 a yard and I absolutely love the outcome! Been awhile since I posted anything. Have been sewing, just haven't been able to snap photos and post them. This is the #lucilletrousers shortened to make them more like culottes. Made them flat front and used a button instead hook/bar. Top is my third #hepburntop. Matching these stripes at the shoulder was a pain. I lost some fabric along the neck because of it, and the shoulders slip. I think some elastic will help that. #fabric used was leftover #stretchdenim from @hobbylobby for the Lucilles and #cottonspandex from @nickoftimefabric for the Hepburn.
