St. John Zion Union Baptist Church in St. John Colony, Texas. Though it is unclear when the church was built, it closed roughly 11 years ago and has since fallen into disrepair. St. John Colony was a Freedom Colony settled in 1872, roughly 34 miles from Austin. The town is considered an unincorporated community, but it hosts a vibrant Juneteenth celebration every year for over 150 years now. For those unfamiliar, Freedom Colonies were communities settled by formerly enslaved people during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras, providing a safe place for Black Texans to live independently and away from the perils of a hostile society. I’ve never seen anything like the sculptural woodwork in the 1963 White’s Funeral Home chapel! Four generations of White family members have helped Texans transition. W.A. White’s career brought him from Springtown to Poolville to Weatherford, where he began his undertaking business in 1914. The original funeral home was built in 1930 and the Whites innovated over the decades by establishing a cemetery, creating a burial insurance company, and providing the first air-conditioned chapel in town. “Classic movies, tribute artists, and vintage neon are the key hallmarks of the 1950’s Ector Theatre in downtown Odessa. The Ector opened in 1951, four years before the release of the 1955 James Dean classic “Rebel Without a Cause”, with a screening of “Half Angel” starring Loretta Young. The theatre, a dazzling example of Art Moderne movie house styling with its dark orange brick, green granite, aluminum detailing, and wrap-around neon marquee, served the region’s movie lovers a continuous fare of Hollywood movies until closing its doors in 1985. What followed was a series of fits and starts until Odessa residents Don and Toni Stice, spearheading a “Friends of the Ector” organization, took over the building in 2001 and restored much of the brilliant neon grid-work spanning the movie palace façade. The Stices have done their best to keep the Ector doors open, scheduling theatrical events on the Ector’s stage throughout the year including an evening with the Elvis impersonator Vince King, musical artists paying tribute to country singers like George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Brooks & Dunn, rock legend Buddy Holly, and the mid-century chart-topping group The Platters. Field of Red When we headed out through the Texas Hill Country last week, the one thing @coznlinda and I were hoping for was to find a lone tree in a field of flowers. You’d think that would be a simple task, but after hours of touring backroads, we mainly saw swaths of flowers right along the roads-not full fields. Eventually we came upon this scene, and though I would have preferred to have the tree against the blue sky-not against more trees, it was the best we could do. 🇺🇲 - 🇧🇷 Yesterday, during the #MotoGPAmericas, I decided I’d play with panning. I wanted experimental images with lots of blur to create an abstract. I also wanted to capture that fleeting moment of dynamic energy in this photo. With my seat strategically located high in Turn 15, I saw action in a succession of curves. I set out for the “perfect storm”: low shutter speed, panning my camera, and motorcycle speed coming together in a canvas of vibrant motion. It's a delicate convergence of settings that paid off for my eye. This is the same photo, but do you prefer version 1 or 2?
