The 1966 Pirtle Technology Center at Tyler Junior College was designed by E. Davis Wilcox, who oversaw four building expansions over the next two decades. Wilcox’s modern designs can be found throughout the state. He studied at @tjcapaches before getting an architecture degree from @georgiatech in 1935. He helped shape Tyler by designing several significant buildings, including the John Tyler High School, Wagstaff Gymnasium, Tyler Museum of Art (which modTEXAS featured this spring), and the Genecov Building. This lovely building is named for Tyler’s “Most Outstanding Citizen of 1962,” George W. Pirtle, who served on TJC’s Board of Trustees from 1956 to 1972. Two years ago today. Emory Peak, @bigbendnps It was a hike that next felt exhausting, but the scramble at the end definitely got my heart racing. It wasn’t overly complicated, but there were a ton of people on the large rocks at top, so climbing them was a little uncomfortable. The biggest part was climbing down. The frown below always looks scarier than the rocks above. Few people skipped the last part of the climb, and and finally had to throw my backpack on the ground because my trekking poles kept getting stuck on the rocks behind me. St. John Zion Union Baptist Church in St. John Colony, Texas. Though it is unclear when the church was built, it closed roughly 11 years ago and has since fallen into disrepair. St. John Colony was a Freedom Colony settled in 1872, roughly 34 miles from Austin. The town is considered an unincorporated community, but it hosts a vibrant Juneteenth celebration every year for over 150 years now. For those unfamiliar, Freedom Colonies were communities settled by formerly enslaved people during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras, providing a safe place for Black Texans to live independently and away from the perils of a hostile society.
