Totoro is almost as mysterious as jellyfish and other similar sea creatures. The Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis), also sometimes called a bluebottle and katsunoeboshi (カツオのえぼし) in Japanese floats on the surface of the ocean. It's often mistaken for a jellyfish, but it's actually a siphonophore, a colony of tiny, specialized polyps that work together as one organism. Each Portuguese man-of-war is made up of four types of polyps: Pneumatophore: This is the gas-filled bladder that floats on the surface of the water. It looks like a blue, violet, or pink sail and helps the Portuguese man-of-war drift with the wind and currents. Dactylozooids: These are the long, stinging tentacles that can grow up to 30 meters long. They are covered in stinging cells that can paralyze and kill small fish, plankton, and other prey. Gastrozooids: These polyps are responsible for digestion. They absorb the nutrients from the prey that is captured by the tentacles. Gonozooids: These polyps are responsible for reproduction. They produce sperm and eggs that are released into the water, where they can fertilize each other and create new Portuguese man-of-war. Each polyp type in a colony shares the same genetic info. However, they undergo differentiation, a process where cells specialize to take on different functions and structures. This happens during development, leading to the distinct forms and roles of each polyp type (floatation, stinging, digestion, reproduction). Therefore, while the polyps are genetically identical, they don't remain identical throughout their lifespan due to differentiation. So they aren’t distinctly true clones. The Portuguese man-of-war is found in tropical waters around the world. It is a carnivore and eats small fish, plankton, etc. Its sting can be painful to humans, but it is rarely fatal. #totoroglenngould Glenn Herbert Gould (September 25, 1932 – October 4, 1982) was a Canadian classical pianist. He was one of the most famous and celebrated pianists of the 20th century, and was renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Gould's playing was distinguished by remarkable technical proficiency and a capacity to articulate the contrapuntal texture of Bach's music. Gould was widely known for his unusual habits. He often hummed or sang while he played, and his audio engineers were not always able to exclude his voice from recordings. Doraemon. Since 1969, 1300 comic book chapters, 3 anime TV series, 40 animated movies, a dozen video games, near infinite merchandising... What is Doraemon? "Earless robotic cat, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a boy named Nobita." And Nobita? A 5th grade boy, he is lazy and useless. Despite encouragement and help from others around him, his character shows no growth, no appreciation of others nor recognition of his own mistakes. He's the kind of character to not idolize. I’m reminded of Caillou, and the surrounding criticism: ______ He has an almost supernatural ability to reach through the television and turn the show’s young viewers into shrill monsters. Children who watch this program tend to copy Caillou’s behavior. Whining, demanding, throwing (themselves) on the floor kicking and screaming. Caillou is a shameless whiner. Virtually every episode focuses on Caillou whining his way through a mundane task without reprimand or consequence. Whining can often constitute Caillou’s only interaction with the surrounding world. ______ Nobita, though differing in terms of traits and behavior, is equally lacking in value. The cat is cute and has items to save Nobita from himself. A Canadian 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables is well known around the world. Set in Prince Edward Island, a Canadian island on the east coast, you can see some of the original buildings from the tv series. PEI is a beautiful place! Anne of Green Gables is known as “Akage No An” [赤毛のアン] meaning “Red-haired Anne.” The book has been part of the national school curriculum since 1952, and received even more attention with 1979’s broadcast of the Japanese Anime version. You can visit Anne’s replica home on the northern island of Hokkaido for free in the summer. A 1919 film adaptation changed the location to America, to which Montgomery, the original author, wrote, “A skunk and an American flag were introduced – both equally unknown on PE island. I could have shrieked with rage over the latter. Such crass, blatant Yankeeism!” A Japanese anime film adaption was made in 1989, but not release until 2010, screened at the Ghibli museum. A Totoro connection, indeed! Numerous other films, comics, novels, plays, musicals and more have been strongly inspired by the novel. Netflix’s “Anne with an E” is particularly wonderful. The year was 2002. The console was the gamecube. The game was "Super Mario Sunshine." Can you remember playing it 20 years go? The inarguably most fun game for any console up to that point and since then, as well. Mario 64, which had blown minds with 3d gameplay, came out 6 years earlier. And the original Mario was first created for Donkey Kong in 1981, because they couldn't get licensing rights to Popeye. Originally named "Mr. Video", the name Mario came from one of Nintendo's warehouse landlords. In Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device) is attached to Mario's back and used throughout the game for all kinds of cool moves. Collecting shine sprites and blue coins, defeating big squids and kicking durians were all fun elements to this game. Also, if you beat the game, Mario can wear a Hawaiian shirt. Chuggaaconroy on Youtube can help you get the blue coins that you are looking for. By the way, do you know the Panasonic Q? It's a Nintendo Gamecube made by Panasonic that plays DVDs, too. It was front loading, had a subwoofer jack, optical audio output, backlit LED, and was made of stainless steel. Born in 1978, the president of Ukraine is Volodymyr Zelenskyy since 2019. This Totoro comes from a serious request from the absolutely wonderful woodworking educator @rexkrueger. He is delightful. From central Ukraine, Zelensky became a comedian after graduating university. His "immensely popular" TV series, from 2015 to 2019, titled "Servant to the People" had him playing the role of the Ukranian president. He was very well-known at that time. In 2019, he started the "Servant to the People" political party, mostly as a placeholder so it wouldn't be misappropriated. But its popularity was undeniable, and he ended up running for president and winning with a 73% majority of votes. His platform was anti-establishment, anti-corruption, and had a strong focus on opening a dialogue with Putin to descrease growing tensions at the time. Kawaii! Lolita fashion and Totoro, together at last! Lolita fashion, which began in Japan over 50 years ago, is a subculture "highly influenced by Victorian styles [and] the aesthetic of cuteness." To outsiders, it looks like a colorful, delightful, yet complex subculture of playfulness, trendiness, DIY and fun! To insiders, it absolutely is! A not quite exact history goes something like this: "Kawaii" style, focusing on the cute handwriting of Japanese schoolchildren, came about in the 70s. From that came Sanrio's Hello Kitty. Around that time "Otome-kei" (roughly "maiden style") began, and later from a DIY fashion subculture of making or modifying clothes emerged a new subculture. It was called "Doll-kei." A Tokyo shopping district, Harajuku, the inarguable birthplace of Lolita fashion, restricted car traffic on Sundays in 1977. The increased foot traffic was great for brands like Pink House, Angelic Pretty, and Milk to really get creative and sell super cute clothing. Outfits were patterned, colorful, with ribbons and lace. The style grew for another 10 years, then named officially Lolita Fashion in 1987. Partly due to the economic bubble burst of the early 90s, there was an explosion of alternative fashion among youth, which included Lolita. This was a magical time of massive fashion-led meet-ups on Harajuku bridge and nearby parks. The trend spread around the world by the early 2000s, and Lolita Fashion was ubiquitous in the industry. In 2004, Gwen Stefani released "Harajuku Girls." Remember that song? In 2011, "kawaii" was added to the English language Oxford Dictionary. There are dozens of sub-subcultures, ero, guro, qi, wa, punk, shiro, hime, kuro, sweet, country... Correct me if I'm wrong, but two other cool things about Lolita Fashion are the approachable friendliness of the subculture in general and the DIY/re-use/recycle/upcycle brand concious (as opposed to cheap fast-fashion) attitudes. Note that Lolita Fashion is sweet, cute, elegant, playful and is coupled with proud agency of the passionate individual. It has nothing to do with Nabokov's 1955 novel. They are completely unrelated. Coach McGuirk is the soccer coach to the trio of friends, Jason, Brendan and Melissa. These three spend most of their free time making wonderfully imaginative home movies. This morning, I decided to combine my three smaller pots of #hoyamathilde (previously in a chunky soil mix) into this single larger Totoro pot by @queerbabepottery (using #lechuzapon). At the beginning, I painstakingly washed off the soil from each cutting before placing it in the new pot. But by the last few cuttings, I just left whatever bark and perlite was stuck to the roots and covered them with pon. 😅 I worked on this throughout the day, whenever I had a break from homeschooling the kiddos. (And I definitely regretted starting this project many times because of how long it was taking. 😆) I’m finally done now, and I am obsessed with how it turned out! 😍 I made this heart trellis 18 months ago for my Hoya rotundiflora, but she hated it, so I’m glad to be able to reuse it now. ♻️ Happy #MathildeMonday and almost #TotoroTuesday! 💚💚💚

Soon, the Ukulele would be created and solidified as a solid piece of Hawaiian music and culture. The Ukulele was patented in 1917 in Hawaii. Also in 1917, the June's Popular Mechanics had an instructional on how to build your own ukulele "at the cost of 30 cents." Swipe to check it out. The ukulele is massively popular in Japan today, due in part to its 1929 introduction into the country. During WWII, when western music was heavily repressed by the gov't, people secretly had ukulele get-togethers. In the 60s, J. Chalmers Doane from Nova Scotia (east-coast Canada), brought the Ukulele into school music programs across the country through his research, books and musical literacy educational programs. As a cheap, portable, repairable, somewhat durable, easy-to-learn and quiet instrument, it's perfect for school children. Do any other instruments hit all these points? The ukulele dwindled in popularity until the 90s when more manufacturers, performers and publications led to an increase in interest. This was also when George Harrison of the Beatles said, "everybody should have and play a uke. It's so simple to carry with you, and it is one instrument you can't play and not laugh!" In 2010, Weezer (at a show in Edmonton, Canada with Bad Religion, Tokyo Police Club) played ukuleles while jumping on a trampoline but then sadly smashed them. Youtube popularized the ukulele. Try any song you can think of plus "Ukulele": you'll find wonderful covers and instructionals. Maybe get yourself a ukulele? Fun fact, in "the west" it is pronounced "yoo-kah-LAY-lee", and the Hawaiian pronunciation is closer to "OO-koo-LEH-leh." Eating a big “power pellet” turned the ghosts blue, so Pac-man could eat them. The entire game was made by a team of 9 people in just under a year and a half. This game was created as a game that women could enjoy, too. At the time, almost all video games were focused on war, sports and violence. This was rather progressive for Japan in 1979. An onigiri (OH-KNEE-GHEE-REE) is a generally triangle-shaped hand-held ball of rice. A pickled sour plum (umeboshi) inside a rice ball and wrapped with seaweed is a wonderful treat. The white Kermode bear, a.k.a Spirit Bear, is a sub-species of the American Black Bear. Nearly 20% of these bears are fully white - currently around 300 are alive. They are of great importance to the indigenous peoples of the area. Most of them live on the islands off the west coast of Canada (such as Gribbell and Roderick Island). White Kermode (ker-MOH-dee) bears are not albino, it is a recessive gene similar to red hair in humans. Though mostly vegetarian, in Autumn they are obligate predators, fishing for salmon to fatten up for the winter. Quite interestingly, the white Kermode is significantly more successful when catching salmon, because a massive dark ominous blob above the water is easier for the fish to spot. They can be over 200kg and about 180cm standing upright. Clover is the only white Kermode bear in captivity. He's in the @bcwildlifepark in Kamloops, BC. After his rescue and rehabilitation efforts, he was unsuccessfully released twice. It's winter, so he has denned down until spring. On the old Japanese calendar, the first day of spring is Setsubun. It means "seasonal division." This year it's on February 3rd. Commonly across Japan, people throw roasted soy beans out their front door or at a family member wearing a demon mask while shouting "Demons out! Good luck in!" In Japanese, "oni wa soto! fuku wa uchi!" Basically, gtfo bad luck. This is called "mamemaki." In some areas, an extra big sushi roll (eho-maki) is eaten in silence while facing this lucky direction of the year. This year it's North-northwest. Nike released Setsubun sneakers this year with Ukiyo-e art, and they look awesome. Unicorns have been around for as long as everything else has been. Though depicted throughout history all around the world, their presence is fleeting. They're tough to spot! __________ In Japan, both Kirin and Sin-you have single head-central horns. The Sin-you is an imposing and truth-knowing creature. Do not tell lies near one. The Kirin is in the top three of most powerful creatures, among the Phoenix and Dragon. Despite their rearward curving horn and awesome form, the Kirin is quite shy and peaceful. They can be seen skipping along the clouds, generally to avoid harming a single blade of grass. Totoro definitely is friends with a Kirin. __________ In the Middle Ages, labeled as unicorn horns, were gifts of narwhal tusks. Tragically, these were thought to have medicinal properties and status symbol. Beautiful animals across the world still suffer from these human falsities. Da Vinci said unicorns could be trapped by a virgin, "laying aside all fear it will go up to a seated damsel and go to sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it." But Shakespeare said just stand in front of a tree, and when it charges, jump out of the way; the horn will simply get stuck like a nail in a board of wood. 1927 - Elizabeth Graham was the first ice hockey goalie to wear a mask. 1930 - Clint Benedict wore a fairly creepy leather mask with a giant nose for only 5 NHL games with the Montreal Maroons. It was essentially a fencing mask. #clintbenedict 1936 - Teji Honma (本間悌次) wore the first Olympic Games goalie mask. He wore glasses, so he needed a baseball catcher style modified mask that made him look like Bubbles (@bubblestpb) from The Trailer Park Boys. Both games were outdoors and had big snowstorms. His team lost both games. Fun fact, the 1936 Winter Olympics in Bavaria, Germany were opened by Hitler. #teijihonma 1959 - Jacques Plante broke his nose early in a game. After getting stitches, he quickly returned to the game wearing his "practice only" fiberglass face mask. His coach was angry that he decided to wear the mask. He played in the NHL from 1952 to 1975. Wow, 23 years of pucks to the face. #jacquesplante 1973 - Gump Worsley, who had told Plante, "Anyone who wears a mask is a chicken. My face is my mask," wore a mask with the Minnesota North Stars. #gumpworsley 1974 - Andy Brown of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the last NHL goalie to not wear a mask. 2018 - NHL's 100th season of play. Despite decades of advancement in technology and the culture of the face mask, 13 NHL goaltenders suffered concussions this season. There were 82 games total played that year.
