Life is Mysterious and Amazing Scene: A massive storm is flooding your town and you decide to drive through it to get home, your son is saying a girl is on the water and then you see her and “save” her, almost getting swept away in the process. She tells you she used to be a fish. Your response? “Life is mysterious and amazing” - end scene. Lisa was so real for that. In all honesty though the events of Ponyo and Lisa’s character overall were so visually interesting, fun and entertaining. From the get go Lisa is frustrated for working a full time job to assist the elderly, raise their son while their partner is at sea, and the fury she shows when busting out that beer and rage quitting the day. Felt like one of the most realistic women in the modern setting Ghibli films. I also know if I were a kid and my mom packed me a lunch like she did before heading back to check on the elderly, I would have felt like a queen. Dayglow- With creations, signature series, hand brews and teas it was hard to pick one drink. For context, I went almost at 2pm, already had two coffees before hand and zero breakfast -at this point my stomach was begging me for something with more sustenance than black coffee. I settled for an iced Ponyo. Ponyo consists of: hibiscus distilled coffee, strawberry, condensed coco and beet root. Sounds like breakfast, right? What impressed me the most about Dayglow is that they were making what looked like a cocktail menu but with coffee. Their creations drifted away from the 2 or 3 ingredients that some insist are the max to be able to taste and honor the coffee’s profile. With ingredients like bourbon, applewood smoke salt, pistachio milk, clementine shrub and even zero proof whiskey, Dayglow was a playground for my mind (and tastebuds). On the other hand, they also had amazing hand brews from US, UK, Japan, France, Poland and Mexico (shout out o @cafeconjiribilla ). If you are ever in Chicago, I recommend stopping by and having a drink or two.
📍Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, Scotland, 2024. Ever since I can remember, I have loved animated films. As a child, I watched them all the time. When I one day came across My Neighbour Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001), much to my mothers dismay, I was spellbound. I watched them over and over again, almost obsessively. I couldn’t get enough. The animation and storytelling was like nothing I had ever seen before on screen. It felt comforting, warm, and welcoming; even though there were some scenes in the second film mentioned that frightened me. Even today, as an adult, I still hold these films in high regard. Studio Ghibli takes a lot of inspiration from European culture and literature in their films, as well as Japanese. Some of their animations are more heavily inspired by literature than others, with some adopting the names of the works they are based on, while others only have some mild influence on the stories becoming. In the list above, I run through all of the references I’ve been able to clock. Some works are from my own guesses and some are from articles I’ve read about the film’s productions. Enjoy!
