@phantomcreek may the the most ostentatious winery in the Okanagan, perhaps in all of Canada. Its owner, Richter Bai, an ex-mining tycoon of China, spent over $100 million (pre-covid dollars) to purchase choice vineyards and to build this most opulent estate. The impression we got on our guided tour is that Phantom Creek caters to the ultra wealthy. They have a private barrel program (about 300 bottles), transportation via helicopter (there were 2 on the property during our visit), and soon will offer a fleet of Porsche electric vehicles for on-site use. The estate somm described their barrel room luncheon, a $450.00 per person affair, as their “accessible” lunch option. La viognier es una uva blanca del valle del Ródano, Francia.Fuera de Francia, la viognier puede encontrarse en otros países europeos y en distintos países de América. En algunas regiones vinícolas, la viognier es fermentada junto con la uva tinta syrah, aportando color y buqué al vino. Tiene potencial para producir vinos con cuerpo y con carácter suave. A diferencia del chardonnay, tiene aromas más naturales, entre los cuales están nota sa melocotón, pera, violetas y minerales. La uva requiere una estación de crecimiento larga y cálida, para madurar por completo, pero un clima muy cálido puede hacer que la uva desarrolle altos niveles de azúcares que den lugar a un alto grado alcohólico. . No point in having anything but the best on #internationalviognierday - The Virgilius from Eden Valley @yalumbawine, the pioneers of Viognier in Australia more than 40 years ago. Old vines grown on high, cool slopes, fermentation with wild yeasts, aged in French oak barrels = aromas and flavours of apricot, freesia (whatever happened to freesias?), ginger, white pepper and grapefruit and a wonderful texture. We’re having it with dressed crab, but it also goes well with mild, creamy, coconut curries. This wine was a sample. I couldn’t do my job without samples (mind you, nor could I do it without spending too much money on wine). @internationalviognierday

Every last Friday of April is International Viognier Day. This year, it falls on April 26th. I could not possibly let this weekend pass without discussing this amazing white grape that for me, was my secret sauce in my Raiders rosé. I knew when we were blending, I wanted to add as much of this grape in our blend as possible because I feel this special grapes floral, beautiful notes of peaches, pears, melons, lemons, honeysuckle and lots of mineral to this full bodied white wine would add such character and beautiful notes on the nose in the glass. Viognier can be grown in both warm and cool climates and now is grown all over California and is the most planted white Rhone varietal in the US. Also now grown in Oregon, South Africa, Chile, New Zealand, Canada, little parts of Italy & of course it thrives in France.
