In the nice 80 to 90 minute movie you are left with a fun thrill ride that is thoughtless, but entertaining as hell! Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) wakes up to a DVD showing that he plays, then sees that his enemy, injected him just moments before with a Chinese synthetic that is going to shut down his heart. The only way to stop it? By upping his adrenaline. I normally would say something like this would be beyond stupid, and this is in someways that but I’d say both actors and directors know how this is and everyone goes for it and it makes it better. [부산모카 소장품 이야기] 　 부산현대미술관은 보다 많은 분들께 소장품을 소개해드리고자 매주 일요일, 부산일보에 연재중인 [부산MoCA, 오늘 만나는 미술]의 소장품 주제 기사를 재편하여 공유합니다. 여러분의 관심과 성원 부탁드립니다. 강신대, 〈파국에 대처하는 우리들의 자세〉, 2016 단채널 비디오, 사운드, 9분 55초 자본주의 시대를 위한 풍경화 강신대(1988- ) 작가는 페이스북, 트위터, 유튜브 등 현재 우리에게 익숙한 시청각 미디어의 언어로 세계 곳곳에서 일어나는 사회적 재난의 모순이 재현되는 방식을 이미지화하며 ‘순간’으로 점멸되는 동시대 시간성의 개념을 탐구해왔다. 특히, 그는 대중 매체의 이미지 생산, 유통, 소비 시스템이 작동하는 방식 자체를 포착해 이를 작품의 방법론으로 끌어들임으로써 신자유주의적 자본주의 사회 시스템을 비틀고자 한다. 강신대 작가의 작품은 이미 2019년 부산현대미술관에서 열린 전시 ‘시간 밖의 기록자들’에 출품된 바 있다. 당시 소개되었던 작품 ‘파국에 대처하는 우리들의 자세’(2016)는 현재 부산현대미술관에 소장되어 있다. 인터넷상의 슬럼 이미지를 수집해 재조합한 가상의 슬럼 이미지와 장엄한 사운드로 구성된 이 작품의 특이성은 마치 유튜브에서 한 영상이 재생되다 갑자기 전혀 다른 영상으로 전환되듯이, 작가에 의해 재현된 이 슬럼 세계가 약 15초간 재생되다 갑자기 멈춰서는 지점에서 발생하는 운동성에 있다. 이 반복 재생 구조는 최근 ‘파국적’이라 불리는 사태들이 미디어 매체를 통해 생산, 배포, 소비되는 사이 우리의 시각적 충격이 무뎌지고 주체적 인식의 계기가 상실되는 판단 중지 상태에 이른 동시대를 절망적으로 그려낸다. 전시 ‘자연에 대한 공상적 시나리오’에서 선보인 그의 신작 ‘풍경 연구 S #1’(2023)은 오늘날 예술이 과연 기후위기라는 만성적 비상사태와 행성 차원의 위기를 재현해 낼 수 있는가, 다시 말해, 감각의 장에서 투쟁은 유효한가를 질문하며 기후위기시대의 풍경을 시각화하려 시도한다. 분절된 세 개의 채널이 하나의 장면으로 완성되는 영상 이미지에는 시차 없이 계속해 이어지는 공장들이 늘어선 강변을 배경으로 제자리 걷기만을 반복하는 한 인물이 등장한다. 화면 아래 존재하지만, 우리의 시야에서 완전히 제거되어 사라진 보이지 않는 워킹머신에 올라 걷기 행위만을 반복하는 이 인물은 우리의 시선에서 한 걸음도 멀어지지 않고, 우리에게 계속해서 되돌아오는 같은 풍경만을 재생시킬 뿐이다. 오늘날 자본주의 상품은 그 어느 때보다 구체적이고 섬세한 생태 환경적 이야기와 이미지를 생산하고, 생태 환경적 소비를 통해 우리가 기후변화를 해결하고 극복하는 데 일조할 수 있다고 설파한다. 이처럼 녹색은 자본주의의 새로운 슬로건, 소비자-정체성, 라이프스타일이 되었다. 그러나 이때 생태 환경적 행위는 다시금 자본주의라는 컨베이어 벨트의 동력이 되고, 오늘의 풍경이 반복되는 것을 추동할 뿐이다. 여기에는 자본의 운동을 멈추지 않은 채 자연의 변화 가능성을 논한다면 우리가 마주하게 될 내일의 풍경은 결코 오늘의 풍경과 다르지 않을 것이라는 역설이 잠재되어 있다. 이 점에서 매번 같은 풍경만을 되비출 수밖에 없는 이 동시대 풍경 연구의 디폴트값은 곧 동시대적인 풍경의 재현이자 현현이기도 하다. 글: 김태인 학예연구사 부산일보 2023.12.06.
