Pilea peperomioides , the Chinese money plant, UFO plant, pancake plant, lefse plant or missionary plant, is a species of flowering plant in the nettle family Urticaceae, native to Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southern China. Pilea peperomioides is an erect, evergreen perennial plant, with shiny, dark green, circular leaves up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter on long petioles. The leaves are described as peltate—circular, with the petiole attached near the centre. The plant is completely hairless. It grows to around 30 cm (12 in) tall and wide in the wild. Indoors, it has the potential to grow larger. The stem is greenish to dark brown, usually unbranched and upright, and lignified at the base when mature. In poor growing conditions, it loses its leaves in the lower part of the stem and assumes a distinctive habit. The flowers are inconspicuous. The plant has a superficial resemblance to some species of Peperomia (hence the specific epithet peperomioides), also popular as cultivated plants but in a different family, the Piperaceae. It is also sometimes confused with other peltate-leaved plants such as Nasturtium, Umbilicus and Hydrocotyle. This species occurs only in China: in the southwest of Sichuan province and the west of Yunnan province. This Pilea peperomioides has many aliases including Chinese money plant, UFO plant, pancake plant, coin plant, and the friendship plant. 🛸🌱 I got my Pilea February 2023 when my partner’s boss brought in propagations of his plants for people to take (swipe to the last picture to see how small it was!) Very thankful that he snagged this one for me, as I had been trying to find a Pilea for a little bit. After it got settled in soil, its growth took off! We affectionately call it “the weed,” because it absolutely grows like one 🤭 She’s produced lots of pups, and it’s been lovely getting to share them with friends and family! I can definitely see why it is referred to as the friendship plant 😊🌱✨her last repot was a bit traumatic and seemed to stunt her growth for a while and she lost many leaves, but I am very glad that she’s recovered now, has stopped losing leaves, and is pushing out new leaves! ☀️🪴 Pileas are a very fun, unique, and easy to care for houseplant. Here are some care tips if you’re interested in getting one: ☀️: Pilea peperomioides love medium to bright indirect light. To keep the plant looking symmetrical and growing straight upright, you’ll need to rotate the plant regularly! 💧: Pileas like to nearly dry out between waterings. Thankfully, they provide a good indication of when it’s time to water as their leaves will droop when it dries out. I water mine about every week to two weeks, depending on the season! When you do water, water thoroughly and let water drain out through the drainage hole! 🪴: prefers rich, well-draining soil! Pileas are fairly easy going about what’s in their pot as long as it is well-draining. They would be happy with standard potting mixes, soil mixed with amendments, such a bark, coir, perlite, and pumice or gravel, or even a self made mix that combines regular potting soil with cacti soil!
