In 2021, Manhattan, KS had a population of 54,763 people (according to google). That’s more people than have OI in the entire USA. Zander’s genetic disorder is so rare that even after he broke his femur before the age of 2 from falling while walking across a room, OI wasn’t really considered as a reason since no one else in the family broke bones easily. We pushed for genetic testing and it was both surprising and relieving to get the OI diagnosis because it explained both the femur fracture and the gross motor delays. With every broken bone, I swear I've lived... Osteogenesis Imperfecta has been throwing me hard and fast curve balls since birth. I was born breech (feet first!), and my OI was unknown until I arrived. Thus began my broken adventure in this world. I estimate my fractures at around 75 - 80 or so, but honestly, I have no idea because I haven't kept track. Childhood illnesses can & will be a major stressor on family/married life and while I completely acknowledge (still working on acceptance) that it wasn't my fault *NOT AT ALL* - my parents went on to divorce when I was 8. Later, they had different ideas of health care (really differing views on care, raising, etc) for their children, which carried on through my childhood and that of my brother. I was lucky enough to get in Shriners around the age of 8 or 9 and this set me on a course of 1) having a straighter and stronger body and 2) a limb length discrepancy that became increasingly worse as I grew. This discrepancy finally topped out at about 8 inches, and I stubbornly adjusted to each new (higher) orthotic lift shoe. As I've always walked & after every fracture learned to walk again, it was always the same - anything to keep me walking. Anything. Push through the stares, pointing, laughter, loneliness, self doubt, emotional and physical pain, fractured femurs, tib/fibs, ankles, metatarsals, tarsals and calcaneus, and on and on. Add on multiple tib/fib, ankle & foot surgeries - either adding new hardware or replacing it with something that would help a bit better. Still pushing through the pain that never left. The pain that just sits at a 6 on a pain scale - on a regular day. That's before I even begin my day. I've been fortunate to have an EXCEPTIONAL orthopedist by my side for the last 25 years to help me fight this battle. He's been there at every turn, every heartbreaking acknowledgment of a new or complicated fracture. And he is the one who told me "the next time your tibia fractures, we won't be able to save it. It's just not strong enough anymore". Even with all of my infusions and vitamins, physical therapy, titanium rods, nails, and screws, it was still consistently fighting against me. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
What's the first thing you do in the morning? I wake up, take an inventory of my joints and see what I have to pop back in. OI doesn't just affect my bones. It impacts any part of the body that uses collagen (bones, skin, ligaments, tendons, muscles). our first #wishboneday 💛 At our anatomy scan at 18 weeks our precious baby boy was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease. This causes fragile bones that break easily. We were told our son has a progressive variant of OI known as type 3. He has fractures in his little arms and legs, making the sweetest rainbow shaped bones🌈 The last 8 weeks have been an incredibly emotional rollercoaster as we’ve navigated processing our news and working on formulating our dream team of specialists who are helping us fight for our baby. We’ve gone through a Fetal MRI, a Fetal Echocardiogram, genetic testing, several genetic counseling appointments, meeting with pediatric orthopedic surgeons, meeting with NICU teams and sitting through countless hours of ultrasounds and anatomy scans. Amidst all the unknowns we are so grateful for what we DO know. We are seen. We are loved. We constantly see tender heaven-sent miracles, and we are clinging to them. We love our baby. We feel his strength and his powerful fighting spirit. Our baby was perfectly created the way Heavenly Father intended. Our little family is fiercely and tenderly watched over and wrapped in enormous amounts of love. Years of broken bones taught me that It’s important to love yourself, even all the broken parts. OI is a connective tissue disorder better known as brittle bone disease. My Mom and I have OI type 4. OI bones are weak because collagen is coded incorrectly in our DNA. OI can cause fragile bones, fragile teeth, bone deformities (bowing of long bones), chronic pain, loose joints and short stature. Since collagen is such an important building block in our bodies, many people with OI have symptoms affecting the heart, skin, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, internal organs, ears, and eyes - Have you ever noticed the whites of my eyes appear blue in color? OI is characterized by bones that can fracture from little to no apparent trauma. Instituido e impulsado por Sociedad Australiana de Osteogénesis Imperfecta hace 14 años este 2024, en 2010, con el objetivo de informar, sensibilizar, y concienciar a la sociedad sobre la realidad y necesidades de las personas afectadas por esta patología catalogada como una de las entre 7.000 y 8.000 enfermedades “raras”, hoy, #6DeMayo, se conmemora el ‘Dia Mundial de la Osteogenesis Imperfecta’, también conocido como ‘Wishbone Day’ en Ingles, y común y coloquialmente conocida como la ‘enfermedad de los huesos de cristal’ Como he venido diciendo, la Osteogénesis Imperfecta, es CONGENITA (presente al nacer), y se caracteriza por la formación IMPERFECTA y/o FRAGIL, de TODOS LOS HUESOS DEL CUERPO, incluida la cadena de huesecillos (martillo, yunque y estribo) de los oídos. Es consecuencia de la mutación de 1 de los 2 genes que codifican y producen el colágeno de tipo I, la proteína responsable, y ESENCIAL, de la RIGIDEZ de TODOS los huesos de nuestro sistema óseo/esqueletico. Esta mutacion genética, hace que ese colágeno esté alterado para "mal”, y conlleva irremediablemente, a que TODOS los huesos, sean menos rigidos y duros, y PAREZCAN “cristales”. De ahi su nombre coloquial "huesos de cristal". Aunque SOLO es debido a la mayor fragilidad que tienen. ¡NO ES LITERAL! Hay contabilizados hasta 17 tipos “diferentes” y oficiales" de OI, aunque normalmente, se utilizan solamente los 4 primeros La incidencia de la OI, es de 1 CASO entre cada 10.000-15.000, 15.000-20.000 nacimientos. Solamente un 0.008% de población mundial, está afectada. Significa que hay 0.5 Millones de personas con OI en el mundo. Segun esto, en España, somos (pa quien no lo sepa aun, es lo que tengo yo) entre 3.000 y 4.500 personas, aunque SOLO habria 500 DIAGNOSTICOS OFICIALES CRONICA, NO TIENE CURA. Wishbone Day, celebrated on 6 May, is dedicated to raising awareness about Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease. OI is a genetic condition in which bones fracture easily, often with no obvious cause or minimal injury. The symptoms can range from mild with only a few fractures to severe with many medical complications. At present, there are at least 19 types of OI recognized by the medical industry. While OI is known to be hereditary, there are circumstances where it is a spontaneous mutation. Osteogenesis imperfecta is caused by mutations in the COL1A1 gene or, less commonly, the COL1A2 gene. These genetic changes cause the body to not make enough collagen or the collagen does not work properly. This leads to weak bones that break easily. Stay tuned to know how individuals with OI manage this condition!
Zander man was diagnosed with OI in October of 2022 after we completed genetic testing. OI was not found in either parent sample, which means that it is a true genetic mutation for Zander. However, he is now a carrier of the gene and it is a possibility that he could pass it on. Zander’s first break came in March of 2022 and he has had 5 confirmed fractures in the last 2 years. Despite all of it, his #UnbreakableSpirit always shines through ❤️ #OIawarenessweek
