Poem number 30! Thank you everyone for reading and encouraging me to write on. I think I am going to continue with this practise of writing a poem a day or at least working on one, but will post the poems once a week or so. Here is the last poem of 2024’s Poetry Month ❤️ 30 April A MAP OF THE HEART I traced the shape of my heart. I traced the arteries and the veins, the aorta, and the auricle, studied the chambers and the valves. But they hid their secret deep within their red folds. I put my ears close… Real close and closed my eyes, listening as it raced, to the tales it told with its every booming beat. Yet, its secrets it withheld. I sat back defeated. I reached out and said, “All I want is to know and feel.” And suddenly, it told me all. All of its cherished dreams and hopes, its deep anguish and secret fears, and its resilient joy, and above all, above all… it told me about its sacred loves. It told me, that life is a forgetting, and death is a remembrance. It told me, there is a before and an after, and all of it is in the now. It told me, that forever exists, and love is all there is. This one comes with a story... My parents are good friends with their neighbours. A family, who came from Pakistan. I know them to be kind people, who care, but had never truly met them. . Until the other week. I came home for my mum's birthday and we held a party (very unusual). Friends came from everywhere. Many met for the first time. Characters that reoccur in stories, suddenly alive. It was fun! . This poem was written while digesting a moment, still with me, many days on. I'd returned to my flat, to my notebook, my pen and I wrote it. Then it grew its picture. Getting very sticky making the jalebi (it's mostly Sainsbury's carrier bag and lots and lots of glue!) . The ones that were brought by the neighbours were very sticky too! I've never eaten one. Nervous to try - new food remains a challenge. I'm in recovery from anorexia. But I wanted to taste it. I felt that it mattered. . Quietly, she took it in hand. Offering it to my mouth - I let her feed me. It's hard to explain. That jalebi tasted so much more than sugar. . . So, thank you, Mary. A true delight to meet you and I felt blessed. May God bless us both. Communion. . I don't think I noticed the words that we didn't have to share. Superfluous anyway - our communication lacked nothing needed . to simply connect. . Careful, her fingers gathered up a titbit of delicacy she'd cooked us - offering. I opened my mouth to accept her quiet blessing at contact. . It was sweet, with the flavour of cardamom.
