Thank you to google photos for letting me know I bought the 40 pickup 1 year ago today… Apparently I celebrated by dragging home a 37 Sedan yesterday 🤷🏻♂️😅 Long story short: I still want a coupe, but I lack the insane dollars it takes to buy an original steel coupe and refuse to build a glass car. But an extremely solid and uncut (minus the firewall😢) sedan gets me more room to comfortably cruise with my copilots 👫🐕 and build really the rod I’ve desired. In relation to our discussion about the Kaiser Darrin, I bring you an original 1941 Willy's Americar custom hotrod. Now, I mean "original" in the sense of this being an original steel body and frame car from an original Willy's. This is NOT a reproduction fiberglass shell on a custom frame. The reason why aftermarket companies even make a fiberglass Willy's shell is because of how iconic these originals are. These are one of America's original hotrods, and a testament to American creativity and expression. You see, Willy's made a lot of passenger vehicles up until WWII started, and ceased production of them after they got contracted by the government to make the iconic Jeep. The Jeep was so ungodly popular worldwide, that Willy's mostly focused on Jeep and Jeep related vehicles until merging with Kaiser. The Willy's Americar was a great looking coupe, but suffering from poor reliability, parts support, and power output. The post war hotrodding itch caused builders to embrace the Willy's Americar body, and shove all sorts of powerplants into it. I'm sure the cars association with Jeep drew a lot of vets to it as well. This Willy's is from Mecum, and is an awesome example of a tastefully done 80s restoration. It features a TPI 350, 3 speed automatic, 9 inch narrowed rear end, Mustang II front end, coilovers, 4 wheel disc brakes, A/C, cd player, powder coated frame, stainless exhaust, and really just too much to list. While some of these custom features may seem eye rolling or stereotypical by today's standards, remember this is literally a classic resto-mod, from the days when this was the go-to list of mods to make a wicked hotrod. Personally, I think it has all of the awesome creature comforts to be a daily/summer driver. The color is fantastic too. It also helps that whoever took these pictures knows what the heck they're doing. 5,300 is pretty cool. Let's talk about that. This is a Custom '41 Willys Americar Gasser. Designed by Barney Roos, the Americar was a continuation of the Willys 77 line produced from 1933 to 1937. Produced beginning 1937 as the Model 37, the car featured somewhat traditional styling; Willys executive Joseph Frazer wanted a modern-looking and cheap compact car, which is what the Model 37 ultimately became. Credit to styling allegedly goes to Amos Northup, with Roos getting credit for re-engineering the 77 to become what would become the Americar. The cars would be named based on its model year (Model 37 for 1937 etc.). Powered by a 2.2L Go-Devil inline-4 producing 60 BHP, the Model 40 would be given the Americar moniker in 1941, following patriotic trends of the time. This would continue for 1942, when production of the Americar was halted to assist with the United States's war effort; following the conclusion of the war production would not resume. Under the "Americar" moniker about 29,000 were produced, with some 22,000 in 1941, making the car quite uncommon, although lately many have been converted to hot rods and gassers, so finding a stock Americar now is incredibly difficult. Now this casting was designed by Brendon Vetuskey and introduced in 2019 as a RLC exclusive. This casting has seen four known releases; one is a convention exclusive while the rest are RLC exclusives. This casting features an opening front cowl which exposes a 392 ci (6.4L) Chrysler Hemi V8. The first release, shown here, had a production run of 10,000 cars; the convention release had a run of 6,700. The second and latest releases do not have known quantities.
