Babel is set in an alternate history, where Britain has been using magic to maintain its colonial supremacy. Without getting spoiler-ey, this world is built on the idea that languages are magical resources and there is actual power in the act of translation or meaning making. And so, Britain robs its colonies, not just of material wealth but also children, who speak the different languages that are harnessed to work magic and usher in a magical industrial revolution. The book opens with Robin, a Cantonese speaking orphan in plague-ridden China. He is whisked off to Oxford to be a scholar at Babel, the Royal Institute of Translation where this linguistic magic is forged. We watch as Robin and his friends, a band of outsiders, tussle between fitting in and being themselves. Cue parties and trips to the library, immersive lectures, and an almost utopian pursuit of knowledge. But scratch beneath the surface, and you'll find a horrific world of racism, politics, and brewing rebellion. Footnotes abound and the writer takes her deep-dives into history and etymology seriously. My problem with the book is one of branding. I bought Babel because its cover blurb promised fantasy, dark academia, intrigue, and adult fiction. What I got was more allegorical YA with its stock characters and neat solutions. For me, good fantasy is transformative and forces us to look at reality in fundamentally different ways. Unfortunately, while Babel provides a good metaphor for the colonial project, I can’t help but wonder, if words had actual magical power that could fuel and destroy, wouldn't we have a more fundamentally altered course of history? But hey, genre is a slippery beast and these categories are admittedly subjective. What is your idea of fantasy? Does this sound like a book you’d like? Movie Scenario of Admiral Chen Ho (鄭和), by the late Mr. Yao K’o (姚克)-B Illustration 1: The fleet commanded by Cheng Ho consisted of over 27,000 technicians, officers and servicemen. It comprised of over sixty giant ships. If the small and medium-sized ships in the fleet are included, the number of ships will exceed two hundred. The largest ship is forty four chang (丈) and four ch’ih (尺) in length, and eighteen chang (丈) in width. Each ship was given a name, such as Ch’ing-ho, Hui-k’ang, Ch’ang-ning, An-chi, etc. The largest ship was crewed by one thousand servicemen, the average ship was crewed by four to five hundred servicemen. They were called Pao Ships (寶船). One shipyard was located at Liu River (瀏河) in T’ai-ch’ang (太昌), another at Hsia-kuan (下關) in Nanking (南京). At the foot of Chung-shan (鍾山) in Nanking, there were plantations for lacquer trees, tung oil trees and palm trees. They were used for extracting lacquer and tung oil, as well as making ropes, which were all necessary in shipbuilding. Illustration 2: Based on Cheng Ho’s naval knowledge and experience, a set of charts titled Maps of the Sea Voyages (航海地圖) were produced, consisting of twenty maps on forty pages. The fleet started from Hsia-kuan (下關) in Nanking and left Yangtze River for the sea. Be there shallow water and submerged reefs along the route, they were all meticulously chronicled. This set of charts were reproduced in Wu-pei chih (A Record of Military Matters 武備志) by Mao Yüan-i (茅元儀) who commented: “Roads, villages and national boundaries were recorded in detail and there was no inaccuracy in this set of charts. They were intended to enlighten future generations and to register military triumphs.” Indeed before the time of Cheng Ho, there was certainly no such complete naval records in China. Movie Scenario of Admiral Chen Ho (鄭和) and Mr. C. Y. Tung (董浩雲)-A Six hundred and eighteen years ago, on 15 June in the 3rd year of the Yung-le reign (永樂) of the Ming Dynasty, corresponding to 11 July 1405 of the Gregorian Calendar, Chen Ho (鄭和) commonly spelled as Cheng Ho, was appointed by imperial order to lead the first mission to the countries bordering South China Sea and Indian Ocean. Over the next twenty eight years, he undertook seven voyages, traveling as far as the mouth of Jubba River in Africa and T’ien-fang (天方) in the Arabian Peninsula of West Asia, now known as the holy city of Mecca in present-day Saudi Arabia. These expeditions spanned the reigns of three emperors: Emperor Ch’eng-tsu (成祖), Emperor Jen-tsung (仁宗), and Emperor Hsüan-tsung (宣宗). They are known to the world as the Voyages of Eunuch San-pao to the Western Seas (三寶太監下西洋) or (三保太監下西洋), and initiated an unprecedented chapter in Chinese navigation. The long bygone years since the inaugural voyage, the size of the fleet, and the sea distance covered were unmatched by Western explorers. To honour the 550th anniversary of Cheng Ho's first expedition, the government of the Republic of China designated 11 July as the Maritime Day of the Republic of China in the 44th year of the Republic (1955). Ahhh… At the end of the day, one of my favorite ways to reward myself is to sit in a clean, fresh smelling car, and sink right into their newly upholstered leather seats. It just leaves me feeling relaxed and refreshed to tackle another day! 😝💆🏼♀️ #yaok For real though, it took every ounce of courage to ask @audibarriematt if I could sit in this gorgeous 2018 Audi R8 Performance Spyder and get some photos taken. I was so nervous !!!
