“If there is one word that best describes the @queenmothercafe it is... ... “enduring”. The Queen Street restaurant was started in 1978 in a building that was constructed in 1850. Ownership has been long term with one of the original owners still active. Many of the staff have worked here for over 10 years and a few for over 20 years. There are customers who have become multi generational patrons – they came when they were young and now come with their children and grandchildren. The Queen Street West restaurant, occupies three addresses at the historic building, 206, 208 and 210 Queen Street West. It began at the 206 address with just 18 seats. The backyard garden patio was created in 1984 and the restaurant was enlarged again into the far west bay, at 210 Queen West, in 1996. The back garden terrace is acknowledged by many as a lovely oasis in the heart of the city and is considered one of the best patio restaurants on Queen Street and in Toronto. The name, Queen Mother Café, encapsulates the spirit that the owners’ wanted for the space – to create a welcoming “Home away from Home” – the “Mother of Queen West”. Gracing the walls of the restaurant since its inception, there’s an original gelatin print of the young Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Sinjeon Uptown 📍 Teokk dirty to me 😂 I’m on the hunt for the best tteokbokki in the city. I tried this place back during COVID when my favourite hobby used to be driving around and trying different restaurants and watching movies in the Tesla 😇 but honestly take out food doesn’t hit the same for some reason- that’s why I usually only choose take out if I’m sick or violently hungover lol This place specializes in Korean tteokbokki, fried foods and kimbab. Unfortunately there isn’t too much selection for foods that contain protein The original tteokbokki: the sauce is on the sweeter side compared to other places. They also don’t come with any toppings, you need to add them all on your own (which adds up) Sinjeon Kimbab: this is essentially kimchi kimbab. The kimchi is tasty but the kimbab itself a little boring. There wasn’t any perilla or pickled radish or anything else in there Seaweed rolls: these were super crunchy and freshly fried to order but they were $5 for 3 which is quite expensive compared to all other places It was a decent meal but nothing to rave about. I still like Yupduk tteokbokki and sausages the best (so far) Overall: 6.5/10 ⚠️
