I was completely in this moment. ๐ I was gaining speed and the dirt was loose and every other thought had left my mind, besides, โ wow, youโre going so fast, this is scary and I better stay on my bike!โ ๐ My heart was racing and I was grinning! It was glorious. ๐ This trip revived my soul, gave my brain a break from the rat race of what to do next and just be, to look around and be in awe. I was amount giants which left me feeling small and humble. It was a good feeling. โค๏ธ My phone was on airplane mod for over a week and it was incredible not to check it every hour, 1/2hour, 15 minutesโฆ it was freeing. ๐ค ๐ธ: @hansjw (Side note: he still has a profile but hasnโt check it in a while. This photo was taken 2 years after I officially started ABD. ๐ I remember very clearly, living at my momโs studio apartment above the barn trying to figure out how to put together one of my first orders. This sounds so silly now but, I had mental blocks figuring this out. ๐งก When I was going to get to the laser cutter @generatorvt in Burlington, an hour away from my momโs house? How was I going to package the jewelry? What would I ship the jewelry in? USPS online seemed like a nightmare and I had anxiety about going to the post officeโฆ ๐ All said and done, I think it took me 2 weeks to get out one small retail order and I probably cried during this processโฆ ๐๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ Now, I own a laser cutter and get 100+ pieces of jewelry out in week. I finally have a label printer, ha, seems so simple but feels like a huge step. I have a great platform to receive and ship orders and I have great packaging! ๐ When I stop comparing myself to others and being critical of where I think I should be at this point in the game and just reflect, Iโm able to be grateful and impressed at how far Iโve come. ๐๐ผ When you slow down and reflect what are a few accomplishments you are proud of? Obama ๐ She called last night asking for a small pep talk and laughs. ๐งก I met this amazing woman the 1st day of freshman orientation at Pratt Institute, 2002. We've been friends ever since. In the beginning I would coax her to come over and critique my drawings, she would ask me for life advice. We would visit each other, make art, support one another in our endeavors, listen, give tough feedback and always laugh. I am her polar bear and she is my pheonix. I helped her with her graduate show when they moved it 2 months earleir than the original date and moved her to Knoxville from NYC for her doctorate program. We've been showing up for each other for 20 years. ๐ She designed the new website for ABD, gives hard feedback on my marketing strategies (or lack thereof, ๐) fixes the email kinks and always has insights and opinions on content! ๐ She sits at my table and I am honored to have this dedicated, hard working, intelligent, baddass babe to call a friend and a sister. It is relationships like this that give me belief and strength to keep going when I'm in a slump, working away, alone in my business. Thank you for your support and kind words in my moments of darkness. I've been thinking long and hard as to what Im going to do about my "stuckness." ๐ This is what I've come up with so far... โข Learn new skills @marieforleo 's B-School, implement this learning. โข Start a new content project, more coming on this soon. โข streamline daily practices to help keep mood up. โข Get outside for nature therapy. โข Engage with friends that make me feel great! โข Make a strategic marketing email plan (mine is lacking...) โข Diversify products โข And remember to have compassion and fun along the way! ๐งก I know not all of these things will happen at once but its a place to start. ๐ My mantra for the day: "I am looking forward to the projects, adventures, ups and downs of each day!" ๐ This was taken in Virginia by Hans! Slow and steady wins the race. Through consistent repeatable action I see progress. Going to the gym once, isn't going to give me the strength I desire. Showing up to at my studio once a week isn't going to give me the desired income I'm striving to accomplish, but showing up again and again, making small gains, recognizing the little wins within each day will amount to a bigger success! ๐ค So here's to "one foot in front of the other," and oh, a small win?! Do you like getting outside, exploring and being in nature? Have you given up wearing jewelry on adventures because it's either uncomfortable or heavy? ๐ค I certainly had. In college, I loved expressing myself through my jewelry, heck, it was one of my concentrations under my major of Art Education. But once I moved to a small ski town, it was too difficult to take it on, off, on, off, it felt like a waste of time... now I just put my lightweight, waterproof jewelry on in the morning and do ALL THE ACTIVITIES without worrying if, a) the metal will freeze to my cheek, b) if I'll loose something expense, or c) it'll weigh down my earlobe and hurt. So now, I can accessorize and express myself and not worry! ๐ Phew, really glad to have figured out that small problem! ๐ ๐ธ: @simma_downnow for capturing these majestic hotsprings!

I grew up skiing; whether I liked it or not. My father would sometimes have to throw me over his shoulder kicking and screaming and put me in the car on a Saturday morning to go skiing. Once I got there I was happy as a clam. But, I was young and couldn't see the reward or the end goal while back at home. โ Skiing has taught me so much about how I approach life. It taught me how to face fear, how to keep going even when I was tired and cold, and it also gave me perspective. โ Skiing in the trees is about perspective. If you focus on the trees, you'll hit one. I had to learn to focus on the negative space. As in art and skiing, there is so much beauty in the space. The in-between, that's where I believe the imagination lies, and just like the rubber jewelry, it's like lace, the cut outs, the negative space that give this unique material its awe. For me, its beautiful to find the space and share it with you.
Wow! 2022 hit like a ton of bricks! Anytime I feel even the slightest bit ill, I wondered, "omg, do I have covid?" Went got a test, stayed away from folks until my negative result. Got my results and that day found out that the matriarch of the von Briesen family passed away. We hopped in the car and drove to VA to be with Hans' family. We celebrated some birthdays, buried a wonderful family member with love and respect. She lived a truly wonderful life and touched so many around her. Drove home from VA to find out I had an eye infection, yada-yada... Oh and instagram wouldn't let me post... so I reinstalled the app and I'm back! ...I hope. It's been a heck of a couple weeks... ๐คฃ This is from my December trip with my sister to Charleston, SC. She was also the December email ambassador! It felt fitting to end the year of ambassador emails with my sister! All the emails are on my blog at ABDculture.com ๐ It was daunting to start this project at the beginning of 2021 and know that each month I would be compiling stories and images of those who have helped ABD forge a path of upcycled jewelry! ๐ On to the next email project of sharing brands and projects that are putting sustainability first! ๐

This has been a year of growth, we are all experiencing such a huge global shift and it is up to us to choose what to look at through this adaptation. โค While masks are annoying, they are easy to put on, and we are all having to make accommodations for our fellow persons and family members. I'm finding this requires to continually do self evaluations of what I am afraid of and how I want to show up in the world. ๐ Due to this, I'm finding myself setting new goals personally, for my business and how I relate to family and friends. I am also reminded that growth is always the hardest right before a breakthrough. โค So this holiday, I'm going take it slow, smile for what is, and feel safe in my body. May I wish the same for you. Artist quandary- does anyone else feel this way? ๐ค As a teenager and young adult I felt pulled in so many different directions. I wanted to make art, which can be very time consuming, but I also wanted to be outside playing, skiing, horseback riding, all the things. As I got older, I also became more aware of wanting to stay fit and strong, so I'd always feel stressed for time. How was I supposed to work for a living, stay fit, do art and play outside to feed my soul? ๐คช Well, I became super duper fortunate to be able to make my art into my life's work!!! I am now creative and have time to do the other activities in life that are so much fun and well rounded, like skiing! ๐ค Thanks @skiessentials for ๐ธ, a super fun day testing skis and laughing wirh friends!
Here at ABD we aim to celebrate strength, courage, individuality, compassion, love and of course recycling! ๐ Strength to keep going even when it gets hard. Courage to be different and try something new. Individuality- like @michaelfranti says in one of my favorite quotes, "all the freaky people make the beauty of the world!" Work/play/life balance. Something that is always evolving and changing depending on the season, the day and even the time of day. ๐งก Times get tough for all of us, and having the space to address these needs is even more challenging, which is why I feel fortunate that I am able to create my schedule, my list of goals and work environment. This allows me great freedom to asses what I need from moment to moment, especially in what seems to be the most stressful time of year for me. ๐ But it can also leave so much room for doubt and spiraling into negative self talk. I've been in an emotional low for the last few weeks and needed to take a social media posting break. I remind myself through this platform and my own dialog that a break/taking space is not giving up, its just a reassessment to start again. Today I offer a moment to you to take a break and reassess. Sending you love, light and compassion on these dark winter days!
You'll never know unless you try. Action sports have taught me to push into fear, try something hard and enjoy the exhilaration of the unknown. Growing up I struggled with having girlfriends. I unfortunately think this is pretty common among young ladies... There's a great entreprenuaral saying, "you must be willing to do it youself, but you can't go it alone." I am reminded of this everyday by the amazing folks who show up for me and ABD! Sometimes we ride, sometimes we walk and other times we carry our bike, but wherever we are, as long as one foot is stepping ahead of the other we are making progress. ๐ When it comes to my journey I struggle with comparisons. Why does their chapter 112 look different than my chapter 35? Well, duh, because they are on a completely different sequel! Who dislikes doing dishes or folding laundry? ๐ค๐ผme, yup, this girl. But then I recognize for the bazillionth time that life is repetitive, our jobs are tasks we do over and over again. Whether its twisting wires, painting houses, writing blog posts and articles or even being a cashier. The thing is, we gotta find the repetitive task which means something to us. Lights our fire and that we can stand behind. It could be sharing your story, making a product you believe in (๐ค๐ผ) helping folks eat better or get stronger. Whatever it is I remind myself to find the joy in practice and the work! What's your favorite activity to practice?
The list is endless, the tasks pile up, the seasons are changing, it's getting darker, hibernation mode is setting in... so what to do?! Go ride bikes while its still available! Take a walk with a friend, workout, eat a delicious meal, take a deep breath and remember to LAUGH! Honestly, that's what I love most about riding my bike! There is nothing quite like the love of a pet. They are there when we need a hug, a friend to cuddle, they help us get outside and make us laugh everyday. @mimi_aleta has been doing everything in her power to help her pup Rex feel better these last few weeks. ๐ Let's send her and her 4 legged family member love and prayers for healthy days ahead! ๐
The phrase, "I have a dream," never gets old. It applies to each of us throughout our lives over and over again. But I find myself wondering if my dream for my future is exciting or scary? Well, its both, it's not an "either/or," it's an "and." My dream for my business is exciting AND scary. ๐ This is when I lean heavily into my love of freeskiing and mtn biking and my fear management strategies. What are my risk to reward calculations? What do I have to loose? Will leaning into my fear ultimately bring me joy, exhilaration and success? Or will I let the fear paralyze me and stop me in my tracks? ๐ I can easily sit on the side of fear and the nay sayers and the no's and the what if's, but I have choosen to over and over again, to push them aside for a "this could work, and what do I have to loose," mentality. For me, it just feels better. It feels easier to think about what I don't know, what I can't do, or the no's I so often get when looking for accounts. As y'all might be aware of, I did a bunch of traveling in September and when in new places I'm always curious if there is a bike shop or cute little boutique that will think the rubber jewelry is as cool as I do. I walk in, introduce myself and ask who the buyer is or manager and if I may speak to them. It's always best if I can chat wirh them face to face, but often they aren't available. So I leave a brochure and a sample, aka a bracelet or pair of earrings and hope and pray they'll be interested. ๐ I take a card and try like hell to follow up. But once you are no longer in front if them its so easy for them to say no over email. I heard so many no's on this last trip, I was getting slightly down hearted when, suddenly out of the blue a women contacted me, saying she had seen my jewelry at Santosha Wellness Center and loved it and wanted to carry it in her yoga studio! I was like, oh hell ya! A win! A win, a win!!! ๐งก I have to remind myself to focus on those wins again and again, because sometimes it takes so many no's to get a win! There were so many highlights to this year's @titlenine Pitchfest, but for me, @oiselle_sally striking a pose with her new honeycomb bracelet on was top 5! Besides the obvious accomplishment of being a previous T9 winner, there's the super bonus of having badass lady's like Sally, Bronwen of @bronwenjewelry , Jen of @coalitionsnow and Jennifer of @handful as mentors! These women know how to have fun, work hard and rock the boat! ๐๐๐ฅ
I recently had the opportunity to meet @gracefulnugget one foggy early morning with @darrenbenzphotography at the Waterbury Reservoir. We were hoping for an epic sunrise, instead we made lemonade with a moody morning. ๐ Grace was all smiles and brought her cool race sup for the occasion! She is studying to be a physical therapist at UVM. She loves to shred on her snowboard in the winter and the brown pow on two wheels in the summer! Throughout my childhood, each night I'd lay my head on my pillow and tell myself adventure stories about saving friends from evil villains or rescuing my crush from burning pits, then in my 20's it was dreaming of skiing steep lines and while I still dream of these things now, I dream of how to grow a business. I ask myself what scaling up looks like, how do I recycle more, create new products with more recycled materials and how can I close the materials and product loops we've created... What brings you joy? For me, it's laughter and seeing friends having a great time! Watching @larissajaclyn light up while doing this photoshoot with @darrenbenzphotography for ABD made my day! Her smile is infectious and everything is funny! ๐
My goal is to show up each day with authenticity and my whole heart in business, relationships and life. I guarantee it will not always be pretty, there will most definitely be tears, snot rockets, stompy foot, maybe some kicking and screaming and for sure some doubt. But my promise is to show up and dig in to the hard problems with the goal of finding solutions and a path forward. ๐ When Hans and I first got together there were unconscious tests to see if I would show up for him and I did and in turn he has shown up for me. He never left my side when my father died, he believed so much in ABD that he did the tasks I couldn't wrap my head around and when it comes to our relationship, it's messy but we keep showing up and working it out. ๐งก We are growing and learning new boundaries in regards to work, family, personal goals and freedom. And jeez, it's hard but we are in the arena doing the work and being vulnerable. So here is to the work, whatever it may be for you today. When @abbydreyervt noticed the severe lack of affordable housing in the Mad River Valley she got fired up and wondered what she could do to be of service! She's taken matters into her own hands and is tirelessly working to clear and prep her land for 6 tiny homes to help those who can't afford the inflated rent prices. She truly embodies the saying "leave it better than you found it." If we could all do a little bit more for each other and our environment maybe we could have success tackling some of these national and global issues! ๐ When asked how this baddass relates to her ABD she said this, "I love it! I don't go out of the house without either a bracelet or earrings on. It's comfortable, waterproof and fun! I can get clay all over it and clean it right off!" ๐งก She is rocking the bamboo bracelet in this photo. ๐
My friend and mentor @monicamesadasi came to visit and asked me, "how I like living here?" She and I met in Crested Butte, CO. I said, "it's good, I love my family, it's beautiful and Vermont has been really good to us, but sometimes I feel a calling for bigger skies and mountains... At which point, she turned and told me about when she was a girl, her mother would proclaim, "Monica, bloom where you are!" This was an ah-ha moment and exactly what I needed to hear. I struggle with FOMO (fear of missing out) and thinking the grass is greener, but this saying allows me to make the best of each moment, because if I have a choice of what to think, why not choose this? To make the best out of whatever situation I'm in?! This is my practice, how I look at running my business and life, I can't always do it, but I practice. ๐ This photo was one of those times when the practice came to fruition, it was a beautiful night with beautiful friends! ๐งก
These are the best days, when you're friends find your work out in the world and share it with you! ๐ Again, I'm blown away at the impact seeing these photos has on me! Truly feel blessed that the upcycled jewelry inspires the wearer to feel empowered and confident in themselves! @alishalinton looking towards the path less traveled. ๐ Dad would explain to my sister and I that he was the weirdo of the family. That he didn't follow the conventional path of suburban lifestyle. He moved from New Jersey to the woods of Vermont, built his house and did things his own way. ๐งก I didn't realize that I would also do things my own way. Starting a business with only a few hundred dollars, creating a work life balance that leaves me feeling grateful as I lay my head on my pillow each night and surrounding myself with a community of other like minded weirdos!๐๐! ๐ Now looking to spread the love! #spreadpeacegivelove

@k_k929 always having the most fun and setting a great example for her amazing daughter @briley_rutledge !!! ๐๐ฅ A little back story, KK and I were friends in high school and there was always this whisper that you didn't want to get on KK's bad side cuz she would kick your ass (oh high school is so funny)! Having grown up with 2 older brothers, being a hockey player and was/still is tough as nails! I remember moving home and joining what is now @waterbury_functional_fitness and seeing her there crushing a barbell work out and being like, damn, I wanna be strong like her! ๐คฉ It's been one of the many great joys of moving home and reuniting with this inspiring Momma who's down for the adventure and brings a smile to even the rainiest of days! ๐งก It's an added bonus that she rocks ABD on the regular! ๐
Handstands are like business, allusive, challenging and take tons of practice. This is pretty much the best I've got when it comes to a handstand. My dream to be able to do one of those super sweet hand presses into a handstand and hold for more than .5 seconds! ๐คฃ In my business, I have moments of clarity, success and abundance and then it's back to the drawing board to keep practicing! ๐ค What I love about both, is that I am the creator and whatever I put in, is what I'll get out of it! I desire to leave the places I've been better than I found them. For me, that means taking the discarded and turning it into something beautiful. Leaving someone feeling better because you took a few minutes to smile and ask them how they're doing and I strive to clean up the trail as I travel along it. That could be the trail of life, my home or a simple dog walk. The call to action: how do you leave your space and journey better than you found it?๐๐งก๐
