Last weekend was action-packed. I started out Saturday shooting the Songbird Festival in Annapolis, then went into DC for Matthew Sweet with Abe Partridge, and then out to West Virginia on Sunday for my first time shooting at a race track! 1 - Abe Partridge at Lincoln Theatre. Don't sleep on Abe. If you don't get him at first, try again. He's one of the best songwriters out there. 2 - Matthew Sweet at Lincoln Theatre 3-5 - Songbirds, including my favorite backstage shot of L. Rodgers warming up in the stairwell 6-9 Some of the action at Summit Point Motorsports Park. Special thanks to the folks from Chaos Motorsports and Road Potomac Skidpad for an entertaining day!

[Live Music In The T-Dot] Matthew Sweet @ TD Music Hall w/ Abe Partridge (April 13, 2024) • Power Pop / Indie Rock / Alt Rock / Folk / Blues • The nostalgia feels were cranked high on Saturday night as my wife and I hit up TD Music Hall to see the legendary Matthew Sweet. Approximately 1995-2003 (or so) were my peak “Power Pop” years and, although I tend to swing more eclectic these days, a strong hook and a singalong chorus can still seduce me. Saturday night reminded me that few can ever do so as effectively as Sir Sweet! • Opening the show were the folk stylings of one Abe Partridge , from Mobile Alabama. With equal parts Townes Van Zandt and Arlo Guthrie, he was not only an engaging performer, but also a gifted (and hilarious) storyteller. It was hard not to be drawn by his charm, but as I’ve spent more time with his music since the show, I must also add that he is definitely the most appealing songwriter I’ve come across in quite a long while. As many know, I’m not much of a lyric guy these days, so for me to take notice is definitely something. • From what I understand, it had actually been decades since Matthew Sweet played a show in Toronto, so it’s no wonder that people seemed especially excited at the venue. Even the staff were buzzing, as I could overhear more than a couple of them humming the infectious strains of “Sick Of Myself” under their breath before the show began. Besides the 90’s-centric playlist beforehand (Letters To Cleo, Skydiggers...a little Sugar, anyone?), even Sweet himself knew his audience well, as it was heavily layered with fan faves, primarily from the Girlfriend-Beast-Fun trifecta. Add to that the likes of Paul Chastain from Velvet Crush on bass, John Moreman of The Orange Peels on lead guitar and, (another personal hero), Debbi Peterson of The Bangles on drums (not to mention the talented Adrian Carter on acoustic guitar), and you’re got an evening that couldn’t fail! • Live clips of Abe Partridge’s “Colours” and “Preaching The Blues”, as well as Matthew Sweet’s “Girlfriend”, “I’ve Been Waiting”, “You Don’t Love Me”, “Someone To Pull The Trigger” and “Sick Of Myself” on the YouTubes; link in my stories / highlights. •

We had a lovely little date night in Toronto last night. The Matthew Sweet tickets at TD Music Hall were a gift for Lara's birthday. Couldn't have been better, really - we stayed in a lovely king-size suite directly across from the restaurant, La Bettola di Terroni, which was spectacular, and less than a block from the venue, which was intimate and had great sight lines. Abe Partridge, the opener, was a revelation - he's a great storyteller and an incredible performer. He broke a string on the last song, which he seemed to find hilarious, and managed to finish the song with aplomb. (Adrian Carter played fiddle for the opener and came back for guitar for the headliner.) Matthew Sweet was awesome. (Yes, that is Debbi Peterson, formerly of The Bangles, on drums.) He played all the songs you'd hope he'd play and then some, with great musicians backing him up. And he's a fun storyteller - especially when talking about cats, and his niece, who loves Canada. The bass drum cover is his design. Bucket list show last night. For my birthday, @heartstrings_firstguitars got me tickets to see Mathew Sweet in Toronto at TD Music hall (a smaller venue attached to Massey Hall). Our quick overnight trip was perfect in every way. Sweet and his band did not disappoint. His storytelling was worth the price of admission. So was the fact that Debbi Peterson of the actual Bangles was on drums!! What?!! Also, that's Mathew Sweet's artwork on the drum. Dude has an Etsy store, an affinity for cats, and for his autistic neice who lives with him and happens to have a special interest in Canada. No wonder I've loved his music since forever. Date night 😘, saw hubby's all time favorite band dating back to the 90s, #matthewsweet . I was bribed with a #pokebowl, honestly was a great show though. The opening act, #abepartridge , was entertaining too, but not a super fan of no seating as people get up in your space 😡 and exhausting... I'm old hahaha. Seeing Matthew Sweet perform was a trip back to the 90s! He brought back his fun jangle pop sound, playing all the favorites. One of the best parts of the show was guest drummer Debbi Peterson from The Bangles. She totally rocked it and looked like she was having a blast! Opener, Abe Partridge, was new to me and very entertaining. On top of @officialmatthewsweet’s great set last night @themagicbagmi, I really enjoyed opener @abepartridge. I went in cold not knowing anything about him and was very pleasantly surprised by how entertaining he was. He started his set by singing about how no one wants to hear a song they don’t know. It featured lyrics such as, “I know I’m a crazy hack, I probably won’t be invited back, but I wasn’t making much anyhow.” He told stories about bringing too much negativity to the world between his past as a preacher and being in the Iraq war. He decided to turn things around by creating something positive with his art. Despite some heavy topics, he made it entertaining by telling his stories in continuous, run-on sentences that were minutes long with barely a breath. He was quirky and definitely kept my attention. #abepartridge

I met @abepartridge at #30afest a coupla years back. It was one of those nights where there were three acts performing at the venue we’d staked out, and we were there for act #3. Per the hot wifey’s instructions, I’d secured front-row seats right in the middle of the room. Abe and @realdanbern lead off the evening while I speed-drank bourbon. Lord knows after an afternoon of 16 beers, a gallon of bourbon is ONLY what I needed. As the show started, I had zero expectations. But I was totally fine, as my mighty buzz was making a slow but steady comeback. Well, I was tickled senseless, and not just from the booze. It was probably one of the most entertaining shows I’d seen in five years of festival attendance. You know when you laugh so hard you physically feel your brain pulsing? It was like that. Abe has one hell of an interesting origin story—way more dramatic and intriguing than any DC or Marvel superhero. The short version is: Baptist preacher, gone Air Force tech (served in Middle East), gone artist, gone podcaster, gone folk rock legend (at least in my mind). And he couldn’t be a nicer or more salt-of-the-earth fellow space-time traveler. He signed this album, “I hope you like it.” No artist who has signed an album for me has ever been so humble. If for only “Pop Country Is for Posers” (a t-shirt I also purchased), he’s my Americana hero. Like proper coffee, the grit and earnestness of his ditties is both refreshing and bold. If you’re into Americana with an infusion of truth and humor, you’ll dig Abe. He’s a rare gem. This is Part 7 of 12 of the Drivin N Cryin concert: Drivin N Cryin performing on stage with the first song "Space Eyes" that’s an instrumental song that they mostly play once or twice in the beginning and in the end of most concerts since probably like 2012, the band’s genre is mainly southern rock with elements of hard rock, folk rock, country rock, Americana, rock n roll, roots rock, alternative rock/alt-rock, and country music. This is the current lineup of the band since probably like the 2000s or 2010s: Kevn Kinney the lead vocalist and guitarist and one of the two original founding members in the middle, Tim Nielsen the bassist/backup and occasional lead vocalist and one of the two original founding members on the left of Kevn, Dave V. Johnson the drummer and backup vocalist in the back in front of Kevn, and Laur Joamets (who originally was called Sturgill Simpson but changed his name as there’s already a singer who has that name) the second guitarist on the right of Kevn. The band is mainly a 4 piece with a total of 9 former members originally on the second guitar and drums that left, Kevn and the second guitarist can play lead and rhythm guitars both in an electric and acoustic way! This is Part 5 of 12 of the Drivin N Cryin concert: Abe Partridge and the Purdy's performing, originally it was supposed to be Abe Partridge and the Psych Peas which the Psych Peas is his rock n roll/punk rock band, maybe the guy sitting down playing an instrument is part of The Psych Peas, both the singer Abe and his band The Psych Peas created real music, but his other band right here The Purdy's (Purdy is the southern American name of the word Pretty while others can spell it as Purty with a T instead of a D) hasn’t created real music as if The Purdy's is more of a backup touring band to Abe while The Psych Peas is his other backup band. There wasn’t any elements of straight up punk rock and rock n roll except Abe had more of alternative country music/alt-country with southern rock, americana, country music, folk, folk punk, psychedelic folk/freak folk/acid folk, and outlaw country. I haven’t had my dad in a picture since April 28th, 2019 which we last went to Atlanta, Georgia for the Autism Speaks Atlanta Walk, and both me and my older brother John Ryan has autism but me and my brother are the smarter autistic people! My dad here hasn’t been to a concert since like the early to mid 1990s, he’s been a fan of his number one favorite band Drivin N Cryin since the mid to late 1980s during the band’s 1985 formation in Atlanta, Georgia, this is his first concert of his favorite band too, and my dad been to more Atlanta concerts before I was born in 1995! This is number 3 of our like father like son activities, number 1 is trying new foods, number 2 is trying new drinks, and number 3 is doing fun activities like going to big events! A buncha people said me and my dad are brothers because we look a lot like each other, but we are not a brother couple and more of a father and son couple! Last night was fun because I went to my fifth concert, my first concert in Atlanta, Georgia, my first concert since October 6th, 2018, and my first concert with my dad! We went to see his number one favorite band Drivin N Cryin (usually stylized as Drivin' n' Cryin' and sounds similar to the correct spelling words Driving in Crying) we were one of the very first people in line as the doors opened at 7:10PM or less after they were supposed to open at 7:00PM while originally the doors were supposed to open at 6:00PM and the show starts at 7:00PM but delayed later, the artist who played before the band is Abe Partridge and the Purdy's at 8:06PM or a minute less after it was supposed to start at 8:00PM as there were only two artists for the show, Drivin N Cryin played at 9:13PM or less, this is my 4th country music related concert after the 1st, 2nd and 4th were related country while my 3rd concert was a loud screaming metal concert and this was also my first southern rock concert, and this concert took place at The Center Stage Theater in the part called The Loft!
