I’d read about the Bluebird Cafe (and Bluebird on 3rd) seen it in movies, saw the documentary. I knew it was a special place where rising songwriters could play new material, and veteran songwriters who had written hits for others could tell the stories behind those hits and play the songs the way they had written them. What I could never know was how magical it would be to experience songwriting in its most intimate, raw emotional form performed by masters of the art. Winston-Salem, North Carolina based singer, guitarist, and harmonica player Ernest Thompson was signed by Columbia records as one of the labels first few old time country recording artists in the spring of 1924. Thompson reportedly could play some on more than 20 different instruments including guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, cello, autoharp, piano, and drums. On April 25 & 26, 1924, Ernest Thompson recorded about 20 sides in New York City, 100 years ago today and tomorrow. The release of the Columbia records led to more opportunities for Thompson in the central Carolinas in the mid-1920’s. He upgraded his guitar to a new Gibson, and he even bought an automobile which friends used to chauffeur him to shows. Columbia was happy with early sales of his 1924 record releases, including Tin Pan Alley songs like “Red Wing” and “Snow Deer,” and sacred songs like “Life’s Railway to Heaven,” “Climbing Up the Golden Stairs,” and “Yield Not to Temptation.” In September 1924 Columbia brought him back to New York for 14 new tracks, but sales into 1925 were disappointing, likely because much new material became available for buyers of country music. Columbia dropped Thompson, although they continued to issue recordings under pseudonyms for several more years on budget labels like Diva, Harmony, and Velvet Tone. In January 1930, Ernest attempted a comeback with Gennett Records, but his 5 new sides resulted in only one issued record. In a March 1930 Gennett session, all 5 of his recordings were rejected and never issued. After his recording career ended, Thompson traveled with a partially blind female street performer whom he eventually married, but as the Depression worsened, the duo’s journey stalled in poverty in Baltimore. They eventually made it back home to Winston-Salem where they performed in relative obscurity as they battled local ordinances against beggars and street performers until he died unheralded in 1961 of pneumonia and complications related to heart failure.

He labored in a saw mill as a teen, and was injured in an accident which led to blindness when he was about 18. In the early 1910’s he attended the North Carolina School for the Blind & Deaf in Raleigh and learned some basic trade skills like making brooms, but he apparently had a musical ear and took well to piano tuning. His 1917 World War I registration card claims an exemption from service due to blindness, and lists his occupation as piano tuner. Ernest began learning guitar, harmonica, and other instruments as a preferred way to support himself through performing and busking on Winston-Salem streets. In early 1924, a Columbia records recruiter who had signed Riley Puckett & Gid Tanner, and likely Samantha Bumgarner & Eva Davis, made contact with Thompson through Columbia’s record and phonograph dealership in Winston-Salem. The recruiter traveled to Carolina to audition Thompson and reportedly signed him on the spot and arranged for him to record in New York City on April 25 & 26, 1924. Thompson cut 21 sides at the 2-day session, although 3 were never issued. Columbia records issued at least 15 Thompson records in 1924 alone, including “The Wreck of the Old Southern 97,” “Are You From Dixie?” “Mississippi Sawyer,” and a couple of Prohibition Era drinking songs - “Little Brown Jug” and “How Are You Goin’ to Wet Your Whistle.” Thompson’s early old-time records sold well, possibly because so few records were available in the genre in 1924. In the next few years, Columbia reissued many of his recordings on their budget labels Harmony, Diva, and Velvet Tone. Most of those releases were as the pseudonym ‘Jed Thompkins’ but a few were credited to ‘Ernest Johnson.’ I’ll share several more sides from the April 1924 session in the next post.
