In addition to many of the limited and exclusive RSD releases, we plan to have some cool rare and unique titles available in the shop next Saturday (4/20). Among them will be this unbelievably crisp and clean copy of the infamous Robert Ludwig “hot mix” of Led Zeppelin’s second album. As the legend has it, this was the band’s originally intended mix, full, heavy and dynamic, but when Amhet Ertegun’s daughter played an advance copy at home the needle jumped all over the record. Ertegun and other executives decided that the record had been cut too “hot” (too loud and bass/drum heavy) and immediately ordered that the album be re-cut, which resulted in a much flatter and duller version of the album. It turned out though, ultimately, that this initial test play was done on a very small turntable made for children and was not a true representation of the dynamics of that original Ludwig mix. Regardless, those original copies were ordered pulled and shelved and to be replaced with the new flatter mix. While many were in fact recalled, a good number of them remained in the world and in circulation and today it is considered the preferred mix of “Led Zeppelin II” and one of the holy grails of Zeppelin collecting.
