Cats with FIV often have similar life spans to cats without it. Studies conducted in 2010 and 2022 found that an FIV diagnosis wasn't associated with decreased lifespans. In fact, cats can remain asymptomatic for years or even their entire lives! Although FIV isn't easily transmitted between cats (only through deep bites and NOT via sharing food and other normal interaction), the risk means that a FIV positive cat "should" only be adopted into a single-cat household or a household with other FIV positive cats, or if there is no risk of fight among the cats. It has been a busy year in taking in cats who have tested FIV+. While we are so happy they are off the streets and getting the love and attention they deserve, having 5 FIV+ cats at the TARA house while they are waiting for adoption prevents us from helping other cats in need. With kitten season quickly approaching, we need as much space at the TARA house as we can get! Louie and Slater are two of our gorgeous male cats who are FIV + at our TARA house. Hunky Slater came to us during the cold snap in January by a nice family who did not want to see him outside. Slater is a pretty reserved guy and loves to spend his days on his perch gazing out the window. Pupdate on the “J” Pups! Most of these little faces have gone to their forever homes and are living their best lives, but we do still have 4 members of this sweet family up for grabs. Jersey is a happy boy who loves to be outside playing and soaking in as much of the great outdoors as he can! However, he has an incredibly cuddly side to him and loves belly rubs. He is very attentive and likes to be part of everything you do, a true buddy for life! Jayla is the sweetest little one out of the pack and takes a moment to warm up before her playful side comes out. While her siblings may love to wrestle with each other, her biggest joy in life is being by her human for all of the snuggles and attention a girl could ever want! Meet sweet Dorothea!! Little Dorothea was a stray cat who was fed by a neighborhood until she had her kittens. She did such a good job raising them that they have all found their forever homes now except for this sweet mama. Since she had to fend for herself and her babies, she has a hard time opening up right off the bat and can be a bit shy. However, she has a huge love of treats that will help her conquer her biggest fears and eventually lead her right into your arms for head and chin scritches. She took such great care of her babies, so now it is time for her to be pampered! One fun fact about Dorothea is her purr can actually be heard from around the world! Her one request is that her backside remain untouched unless she gives approval as it is believed she may have an old hip injury. The need for fosters is high because even though they may all live very healthy lives, it is policy that we cannot have FIV+ cats at our adoption center, so they don't get the extra exposure. Louie and Slater are two of our gorgeous male cats who are FIV + at our TARA house. Louie actually came to us with a young female kitty named Lucy, she is NOT FIV + but they are pretty bonded as Louie has been her protector and has helped her come out of her shell. They are an active and playful pair and will bring a lot of joy and energy to your home. They will NOT do well with dogs. Slater is much more reserved and enjoys gentle pets and looking out the window. This handsome man is Bellagio and he made his way to TARA after being surrendered by his owners to a local animal control center. Their vets asked for our help, and we were able to get him into a foster home quickly where he has been waiting for his family since! Since Bellagio has joined us, we have fallen madly in love with him. He is mild-mannered, but one of the sweetest guys to visit us! Bellagio has never met a person he hasn’t loved and will quickly fall in love with his people, so much so that he will actually show his belly for pets very early on! He loves to play and run and jump, but is mostly here for the love! His secret talent is that he actually has some pretty amazing baking skills, and specializes in air biscuits! Bellagio is FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) positive. Cats with FIV often have similar life spans to cats without it. Attention everyone! KJ is STILL up for adoption somehow!! Happy Tuesday from the puppies!! We recently got an update from one of the siblings of the puppies that gives us a good idea of how they may look and what their DNA tests may resemble! Here is what the owner said about their girl: “She’s got a big personality! She’s smart, but also very independent so sometimes she uses her wit to get exactly what she wants. She loves all people and all dogs. She loves to go on walks and play outside. She’d probably stay outside all day if I’d let her. She loves to play with toys, especially tug-o-war and fetch. As she’s gotten older, she’s become quite the cuddler too. She’s food motivated when it comes to training so I used treats to teach her sit, lay, come, and shake.” Her DNA results show that she has some Poodle, Great Pyrenees, and Lab in her along with Border Collie and Catahoula Leopard Dog! Sunday Stories! This is Layla and she has been living the most spoiled and carefree life a girl could ever want! She was spotted at Petsmart where she had been for some time, and after one adoption failed, her life quickly changed. She now has a home with over 100 toys, a big sister/best friend named Gypsy, and a baby sister named Ivy who is still an energetic puppy so Lay watches from afar. These shy ones that finally get to learn what being loved feels like are our favorite stories😍 Here's what her new family has to say about her progress: She's doing very well still, she's settled into home fully, and has been learning new tricks going on daily walks, and she's making several dog friends now. I've even noticed she's started marking her territory and I love that just because it means she's found home. Also Reba has been doing so well that we've been letting her free roam with no destruction and no accidents. Her great grandparents and a few of my friends are absolutely spoiling her with new toys too lol. She's really starting to be more trusting with strangers and not be so skittish. However she has stepped into a roll as guard dog in the best way. She only alerts me if someone is hanging out in the hall too long, if they go on about their way quickly she doesn't even care. Jack was being taken care of by a rural shelter that we work with often, and while they absolutely adored him (and he adored them), they knew he needed to come to KC to find a home. So, we finally were able to make space in our program to get this guy out here, and boy are we glad we did! He quickly became a volunteer favorite. Jack Sparrow is the most loving, happy, silly, velcro dog we've ever met and we are so beyond thrilled that he has finally found his furever. AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION: As many of you know, I do animal rescue as well. As such I rehome MANY abandoned and/or abused kitties taken from the streets of downtown KC. My cutie available for adoption currently is little Bootsie Butt. He is young, very much still in his kitten stage, maybe 1 year at the most & quite small at 7 lbs. He is extremely playful, affectionate, follows you around chatting as he goes, very funny, and will catch bugs for you as entertainment. He is hysterical and will keep you laughing with his antics. If you have kids or other kittles, he will fit in perfectly. Bootsie was abandoned and when I found him hiding in my garage, he was terrified of people. He has since come out of his shell and has learned to trust people and I cannot imagine that anyone would ever mistreat this sweet baby boy. He has been neutered, all his shots, wormed and tested for FIV & FELV and cleared. This skinny little kid loves to eat! I am forever over capacity and at our limit presently. He is bonding too quickly and new kitties cause anxiety in the home. We NEED to find him a good home soon. I really love this guy and it's going to break my heart for sure.
