Many things fit the bill. If you're willing, narrow it down to one thing. Have you got it? Ok. Good. Now, think about the other things you've done that have prepared you to do this challenging thing and quite possibly - knock it out of the park. Can you hold on to that evidence that you can do it? Too many times we approach a really hard effort, task, project, job, role - feeling anxiety, fear, frustration, and/or doubt. Too often we bypass the opportunity to acknowledge we've experienced things along the way that have prepared us for this newest challenge... for this moment. Think again about the hard thing coming at you and your team this week.. Consider the previous roles and assignments you made it through despite the odds ... Think about the shitty stuff you made it through including the unfit people in leadership seats you navigated. Somehow you made it and it's all prepared you for what you're set to face this week. You've already proven yourself to yourself numerous times ... So, go on and use that experience and knowledge to your advantage! No, I'm not preaching. Yes, I run through exercise myself in work and routinely on the bike. In fact, it was today's adventure ride with my husbabe that had me thinking about all of this. That ride is a hard one. The first 4 hours are almost all climbing at altitude. The first times I did it were brutal. I learned a lot, including what not to do AND that I could do it. When we started today I had flashbacks to the first rides and started to worry. Then, I remembered and clung to all the times I made it through and all the lessons I learned including fueling really well.... hence me eating in this picture from today. 😁 I relied on everything that prepared me to get it done today and I did just that. ✨SUNDAY STORIES✨ How do you “switch off” as a creator? For me, the hardest adjustment when becoming a content creator was the amount of time I had to start spending on my phone. I’ve never been a person who enjoys spending a lot of time on my phone (and i’m notorious for being awful at getting back to messages 🙈) In fact, I spent my 20s traveling the world with no data plan for my phone - As a solo female traveler, I now recognize this may not have always been the safest option, but hey I made it out okay 😉 What I appreciated about having no access to internet was the feeling of complete liberation that came along with being unreachable. I was could completely immerse myself in the present, and as a result I was far more likely to make more connections with others around me. And you know what the most important lesson was? The world doesn’t end when you don’t look at your phone. In almost every case, that email - that message - that browse of your feed or the news - it can wait. In the last year that I have switched to the content creator life, I’ve had to spend more time on my phone than ever before. I’ve realized how social media enforces a psychological belief that you have to always be “on” in order to stay relevant. To keep my sanity, I have had to enforce some boundaries to avoid total burnout. Here’s how I switch off as a creator on a weekly basis: ✨I almost always take Saturdays off - not only do I go totally offline, I also won’t respond to emails or messages (unless they are urgent) ✨ When I’m spending time with friends (which is at least once or twice a week), I try to always keep my phone in my bag for the entirety of our time together so I can nurture my friendships and nourish myself with much-needed in person connections Here is a NEW way I switch off as a creator: ✨By taking unplugged weekends outside of the city! A couple of months before graduating from the Mohawk Journalism Program, one of my professors advised us to choose a niche we wanted to fully immerse ourselves in. I picked the book beat. I’ve loved reading and storytelling, ever since I was young, so this niche seemed very natural. Since then, I've had the pleasure of meeting some incredible people and speaking to some inspiring authors. Also, for the past four years, I have been volunteering with gritLIT: Hamilton’s Reader’s & Writer’s Festival. As a young journalist, aspiring writer, and business owner (and just as a person in general), it can feel scary coming into a metaphorical space where you feel like you don’t deserve to be, or where you’re worried about leaving the wrong impression or saying the wrong thing. With that said, I’ve never felt that way about the Hamilton literary scene and the gritLIT community. I’ve always felt at home 📚❤️. In those days visitors were rare to the lighthouse and when the stores were in sort supply, this "chicken" was much applauded by visiting keepers.It become famous as "Solitary Island Chicken" up and down the coastal lighthouses of NSW. Solitary Island "Chicken" 1 rabbit 1 large onion 3 parsnips Soak rabbit overnight. Then towel dry roll in seasoned flour. #SUNDAYSTORIES | The Game of Expectations and Reality I took this photo yesterday during the snowstorm. Yes, I'm serious. We had a snowstorm yesterday, Saturday, April 27th. It snowed all day, actually. This can be the reality of Spring in the mountains of Colorado. It's not the kind of Spring experience that's expected across the country, but it is our reality. This is Spring too. It's the way we experience Spring most years here, actually. We don't usually know the timing or the intensity of the snow, but we expect it'll be part of our reality at some point (or many points) up until late May annually. Knowing this likely reality, I manage my expectations around the Spring experience here. Then, when a Spring snowstorm is the reality, shock and upset about it don't also have to be part of my reality. Did you catch the nuance in this game of expectations and reality? Reality can inform expectations ... AND ... You can manage your expectations in a way that informs and contributes to your reality. I’ve been making seed beads jewelry since I was like 6 years old. I had my drawers littered with old film rolls containers full of beads. I still think those are the best way to store your treasures, too bad they’re hard to come by. The hobby got resurrected somewhere around my 15th birthday when I got obsessed with traditional Ukrainian gerdans - bead necklaces woven on a special loom (you can find beautiful examples of those at @glyanz_gerdan ) And now, almost 20 years later I am at it again and finally I’m not being laughed at because I choose to wear handmade glass beads instead of chunky gold chains or whatever’s trendy this season. I don’t have a physical copy and I regret not purchasing this beautiful UK edition when I visited @landrbookshop last month. I listened to the audiobook and it was fantastic. OMG @justjuliawhelan, your narration was superb!! 🎯🤩 First and foremost, Kristin Hannah can write her tail off. She knows how to tell a good darn story. From the moment I started listening to this audiobook, I was consumed. It takes some really good writing, especially when listening to a book, for the reader to feel the true essence of the setting and time period. Kristin Hannah nails this!! Not only do you get the feeling surrounding the war but you also see how little rights women had. There were also reflection points as I was reminded that we actually smoked cigarettes on planes and in hospitals.😏 My heart ached, I teared up, I was angry, I yelled at several of the characters and laughed a little. My emotions were all over the place but when the story ended I felt thankful. Thankful for women who time and time again show up and serve in many capacities!! “There were no women in Vietnam.” Imagine serving as a U.S. combat nurse in the Vietnam War and coming home to a country who completely ignores your existence or service in the war. This is the story about the women, the combat nurses who served during the Vietnam War. Frankie, oh Frankie. I loved Frances ‘Frankie’ McGrath’s vulnerability and spirit. She was human in every way possible. I yelled at her a couple of times. More than anything, I loved her friendship with Barb and Ethel. This story is so well crafted. I’m still in my feelings. (관음) 방해자란 주인공 남자의 정신분석학적 그림자다. 이 영화의 한줄평으로 지어본 피핑 톰의 즐거운 사디즘 여행에서의 피핑 톰이란 훔쳐보는 톰 이라는 뜻으로, 11세기 영국의 레이디 고다이바(Lady Godiva)의 전설에서 유래해 관음증과 엿보기를 일컫는 관용어로 정착된 말이다. 그러니까 주인공 남자가 꿈속이라는 무의속 공간에서 두개의 자아로 분리되어 여자를 유린하고 관음하며 사랑한다. 즐거운 여행이 아닐 수가 없다. 그리고 이 영화의 두번 째 주목할만한 시선은 무대 세트 미술이다. 어디서 본 것 같지만 한번도 본적 없는 초현실주의적이며 몽환적인 미쟝센을 선사하는데, 이 영화를 만든 유현목 감독도 무대 세트 디자인에 열혈을 다했다고 말한다. 그럼 이 영화에 대한 생각을 여기까지로 마무리하며, 유튜브 채널 한국고전영화에서 영화 ‘춘몽’(1965)을 시청할 수 있다.

My birthday falls on April 17th. Most years it coincides with the Easter holidays when I or everyone else is away. As a child in the 60's and 70's we didnt have parties in the way kids do now. I only remember during a shared family phase, we were allowed to choose what we wanted for supper. Now it is almost perverse if there isnt an ingenious celebration for each coming of age from 2 years onwards. I have enjoyed a few gatherings of 20 or so friends at home but I have never had a proper birthday party - until Thursday night, and that was camouflaged as the new season drop for Spring Summer '24. I love a good party, but building it around me has been too self-conscious making. Yet being at the centre of attention of peoples' well wishing and goodwill is incredibly heartwarming, fortifying and moving. Sometimes hiding out from fun is passive aggressive. Anyway, the party in my shop was the opposite of that - it was fantastic! It started as I arrived from work with my team and was thrilled by the sight of BELLA written in giant silver balloons in my shop window. Quickly, the shop filled up with friends, family members, colleagues and clients. To my joy there were even a few of my absent-at-university son Jimmy's friends - tall young men who I have known since they were tiny. A vote of confidence. There were moments during the party when I felt so happy I kept wishing I was at home on my own, reviewing all the moments of the evening. Then catching myself and realising how absurd this was, and how this fantasy world has kept me from enjoying the real risk of actually having a wonderful time - in real time. As most people departed, apart from BF Teamsters and a few die hards, our brilliant DJ and beloved friend Neville Hyde turned up the music and we danced to the Spice Girls in a circle on the dark red carpet. Thank god I didnt miss it. #SundayStories

Earlier this month I had the honour of seeing one of my favourite authors speak in person, Margaret Atwood. She was at Theatre Aquarius as part of #gritLIT2024 . The evening was filled with laughter and thought-provoking topics - Canisia Lubrin did an exceptional job leading the conversation. Embarrassingly though, I only recently started getting into Margaret Atwood’s work over the past several years – the first book I read of hers was The Handmaid’s Tale in April of 2020, at the height of COVID. Ever since, I have been a dedicated fan of her writing. Her ability to craft a story that leaves readers moved and hungry for more is unlike anything I have ever read before.
